    A Case Study on Experiential Learning in Architecture: Accessible, Climate-Responsive, and Flexible House Designs

    Architectural education is based on acquiring theoretical and applied knowledge. As a result, experiential learning theory was frequently applied to architecture design courses. As experiential learning refers to gaining knowledge by doing, it allows the students to experience implementing the theoretical knowledge and refine their design solutions by communicating with the teachers. The present study aims to integrate experimental learning in a theoretical course named "Building Information" on housing designs for first-year undergraduate architecture students. After eight weeks of the theoretical lecture period, the students were assigned to design a house using one of the specific approaches, namely accessibility, climate responsiveness, or flexibility. The occupants of the houses were defined, and the students determined their spatial needs. After the critique sessions, the house designs were presented with drawings and analogue models as the final product. Three selected examples from each design approach were evaluated in the study. The results showed that the students gained and implemented theoretical knowledge more efficiently with the integration of experimental learning.

    Incorporating Sustainability Principles Into Architectural Design Education: Results of an Experimental Design Studio

    Design is a structured process or a tactical guideline to accomplish a unique expectation of a product, while a design studio is the environment where students are taught the skills to design the product, which may be a building. Hence, the design studio course is the most important component of the architectural education curriculum; it is where the students get an opportunity to apply the theoretical knowledge gained through lecture-based courses. Yet most theory is not put into practice; consequently, the principles of sustainable design solutions are developed. There is an urgent need to teach future architects how to integrate sustainable design principles into their projects in order to prevent or mitigate environmental degradation due to the negative impacts of building projects. This experimental study initiated a new design studio pedagogy and a novel teaching structure for integrating sustainability principles into the architectural design projects of 3rd year students. It also evolved a testing method to assess the success of the new pedagogy and the students' final design projects. This paper presents the results of the experimental design studio and delivers recommendations for subsequent sustainable design studio courses.

    Subjectivity in Design Education: the Perception of the City Through Personal Maps

    Our mental maps related to the cities are limited by our personal perception and fragmented in the process. There are many inner and outer effects that shape our mental maps, and as a result the fragmented whole refers to the total city image in our minds. To represent this image, an experimental study has been conducted with a group of students. They used mapping techniques to design subjective maps. Maps, in general, are objective, and produced by standardised techniques which connote similar meanings for everyone. In contrast, artists and designers use maps as liberating objects of representations. Thus, using mapping techniques, inventing new ways of narration and gaining new understandings towards the city we dwell in are the basic aims of this study. Final designs can be evaluated as tools to question subjectivity in both design and architectural education.

    A Critical Evaluation of Mathematics Courses in Architectural Education and Practice

    Mathematics courses are integral part of architectural education. The content and objectives of these courses were determined in the Age of Enlightenment. Although conditions have changed since then, they still exist without being subjected to a radical revision. This study aims to introduce the necessary information for upgrading the content of mathematics courses to contemporary conditions. On these grounds, the historical conditions when these courses were first considered within architectural education are classified and then the content of existing mathematics courses are examined. Finally, the effects of mathematics and mathematics courses on the epistemology of the profession are scrutinized. © 2008 Springer Science+Business Media B.V.

    Problematization of Assessment in the Architectural Design Education: First Year as a Case Study

    This paper discusses the ways in which studio instructors assess students' design and performance during the basic design studios. Architecture requires a discipline-based education in which design studios have primary place in the curriculum. In design studio education the primary focus of assessment has always been the studio production (i.e. end products of the students). There is a common tendency to neglect students' experience and process of learning during assessments. Furthermore, assessment criteria of the studio instructors may not be explicitly stated.
