    Jerry Fodor’s (1998) Concepts: Where Cognitive Science Went Wrong (hereafter referred to as Concepts) and Geoffrey C. Bowker and Susan Leigh Star’s (1999) Sorting Things Out: Classification and its Consequences (hereafter referred to as Sorting) represent orthogonal views of concepts and categories stemming from two very different philosophical traditions. Fodor focuses on theories of concepts, whereas Bowker and Star discuss what categories and classification systems are. For Fodor, concepts are mental particulars that apply to things in the world (p. 23).

    Feminist Practices: Interdisciplinary Approaches To Women in Architecture

    Feminist practices: interdisciplinary approaches to women in architecture, edited by Lori A. Brown, 2011, Surrey and Burlington, Ashgate, 378 pp., $65 (hardback), ISBN 978-1-4094-2117-7 Feminist Practices originates from a traveling exhibition and series of public talks with the same name that took place in 2008 and 2009. As the title suggests, the book presents feminist practices and methodologies in architecture. While doing that, however, we are urged to think outside the box. Firstly, ‘feminist’ in feminist practices is not necessarily ‘female focused’ or ‘gender specific’. Rather, it refers to alternative modes of seeing, researching and practicing. Secondly, architecture is also approached critically, opposing the star system, engaging the client and the community, and challenging usual hierarchies: visual/material, permanent/transient, public/private, labored/expedient, and precious/ valueless (325). In return, feminist practices in architecture refers to explorations on all alternative modes of pedagogy, research and practice that establish new ways of understanding spatial relationships, revise existing power relations and offer possibilities for new interactions and value systems. This is a huge task, but a worthy one. However, there is one problem with the title that needs to be recognized.

    Energy and Environmental Performance Based Decision Support Process for Early Design Stages of Residential Buildings Under Climate Change

    Building design decisions have high impacts on energy and environmental performance of buildings. Especially, conscious decisions in earlier design stages are more significant due to lifespan impact of buildings. Deficiencies in systematic approach for design decision support to increase energy and environmental performance of buildings are projected as the major problems of this study. Decisions for performance-based design should be made in terms of the most effective design parameters peculiar for each project. This study exemplifies the act of design decision support in early design stage of a residential building in Turkey. The relation between design parameters and annual energy consumption for heating, cooling and annual operational CO2 emissions is examined by global sensitivity analyses for the present, 2020s, 2050s and 2080s weather conditions. Design process requires the assessment of the uncertainties in building performance caused both by design parameters and climate change. The results indicate that the decisions about solar heat gain coefficients (SHGC), and heat transfer coefficients (U) of transparent surfaces on building envelope have the highest impacts on energy and environmental performance of residential buildings in hot-humid climatic conditions.

    Photon-Mapping in Climate-Based Daylight Modelling With High-Resolution Bsdfs

    Visual comfort assessments employing luminance-based metrics rely on efficient CBDM techniques for image synthesis. Data-driven BSDF models allow to isolate internal light paths in optically CFS from CBDM. Bidirectional photon mapping is proposed for the efficient sampling of such models in the calculation of the direct solar component in CBDM. The method allows accurate image synthesis for visual comfort assessments with only two calculation steps, achieving comparable accuracy as the established but complex 5PM. The validity of the approach is confirmed by comparison with backward ray-tracing. Its exemplary application to compare two CFS in terms of glare control demonstrates the importance to achieve reconcilability of conflicting targets such as view and glare control in daylighting.     Experimental and Numerical Investigation of Forced Convection in a Double Skin Façade by Using Nodal Network Approach for Istanbul

    In this study, temperature distribution and heat transfer through the cavity of a double skin façade (DSF) was investigated in the laboratory environment and analyzed numerically by using nodal network approach. The verification of the nodal network method was conducted by using data from the steady-state experiments and the same method was applied for the climate of Istanbul, Turkey under unsteady outside boundary conditions. Furthermore, heat gain and loss values in DSF for January and July were calculated and compared with single skin façade (SSF) application for different directions of the façades. The results were given for a day and a working time period of the office buildings by using monthly average daily climate data. Distinction working hours were more convenient to investigate the energy performance of DSF because of solar radiation effect. Using DSF in all directions, the cooling loads decreased up to 26% comparing to the SSF. DSF system was disadvantageous comparing to the SSF for January. However, it was shown that the heated air in the cavity could be used for preheating process of air in a HVAC system for winter period.

    Exploring the Impact of External Shading System on Cognitive Task Performance, Alertness and Visual Comfort in a Daylit Workplace Environment

    The authors examined the effect of external shading system on cognitive performance, alertness and visual comfort of visual display terminal (VDT) users under two realistic office lighting settings in this study. Daylight was the source of illumination being considered as the most significant and preferred one. A total of 26 participants performed visual and cognitive demanding tasks as well as providing subjective alertness, performance and visual evaluations in a full-scale mock-up VDT workstation. Two trials (with and without shading system) were executed during one experimental session. Results revealed that the use of a shading system improves the performance of a user on colour-naming task requiring sustained attention, while no differential effects were observed on tasks involving other cognitive skills such as search velocity and vigilance. Within-subject performance differences were more pronounced during morning hours. Higher performance was reported in some cognitive tests when the subjective sensation of visual discomfort was lower.

    Fuzzy Logic Model for the Categorization of Manual Lighting Control Behaviour Patterns Based on Daylight Illuminance and Interior Layout

    In considering total building energy consumption, lighting plays an important role in shaping energy consumption and use. Although key strategies (such as energy efficient lighting products, lighting control systems and energy simulation software) are developed so far, such attempts may be unsuccessful unless users are not taken into consideration. Users’ behaviours and their manual lighting control actions depend on various factors, though within the scope of this study manual lighting control behaviour was analysed only in terms of interior layout and daylight illuminance. Three private offices in Izmir Institute of Technology were monitored using illuminance metres and occupancy/light detectors under eight different interior layout conditions. In relation to change of interior layout and daylight penetrations, users’ manual lighting control behaviours were monitored. The obtained data were then used to construct a fuzzy logic model in MATLAB FIS editor. A fuzzy logic algorithm was applied to classify behaviour patterns about the tendency to turn on the lights. This kind of prediction of the light usage tendency regarding the occupancy is aimed to foresee the ‘possible’ manual lighting control behaviour within given conditions. The gathered classification can be used further in future studies of manual lighting control behaviour and energy-saving estimations/simulations.

    An Evaluation Methodology Proposal for Building Envelopes Containing Phase Change Materials: the Case of a Flat Roof in Turkey’s Climate Zones

    Phase change materials (PCMs) can be used to enhance the thermal energy storage capacity of a building element to improve indoor thermal comfort conditions and decrease energy usage, yet these effects need to be carefully analysed to achieve the desired benefits. This paper proposes an evaluation methodology for building envelopes: first, a numerical computational fluid dynamics model is validated by experimental work; then, time-dependent simulations are used to analyse monthly energy requirements and heat flux. A sample flat roof is evaluated in terms of required cooling load with and without PCM in Turkey’s climate zones. Graphical phase change representations and heat flux results were used to evaluate the cooling load reduction in addition to the effects of PCM type and PCM amount and the necessity for night cooling. In conclusion, the methodology is flexible and can be utilized to evaluate the building element for various parameters.

    Characterization and Data-Driven Modeling of a Retro-Reflective Coating in Radiance

    Retro-reflective coatings applied to blinds of reduced geometric complexity promise to provide view to the outside while effectively controlling solar gains and glare. To characterize the reflection characteristics of such coatings over the entire solar spectrum, a novel extension to a scanning gonio-photometer is developed. The extended instrument is tested and applied to measure a coating's Bidirectional Reflection Distribution Function including the region of the retro-reflected peak. The measured datasets are compiled into a data-driven reflection model for the daylight simulation software RADIANCE. This model is applied to illustrate the coating's effect in a comparison to purely diffuse and specular surface finishes on geometrically identical, flat blinds. Daylight supply, the probability of glare, and solar gains are assessed for an exemplary, South-oriented office under sunny sky conditions. The results indicate the potential of the coating to effectively shade direct sunlight even if applied on blinds with minimalistic geometries. The modeling technique is shown to be a general means to replicate the irregular optical properties of the coating, which cannot be represented by the standard models in daylight simulation software.

    Investigation of Indoor Microclimate of Historic Libraries for Preventive Conservation of Manuscripts. Case Study: Tire Necip Paşa Library, Izmir-Turkey

    Conservation of library collections requires an interdisciplinary approach. Dealing with the agents of deterioration via curative and preventive conservation methods has become a significant goal with new standards and norms in recent years. Preventive conservation aims indirect physical interventions such as climate control, good housekeeping and pest management. The aim of this study is to assess the degradation potential of indoor climate on valuable manuscripts that date back to 12th century, in a historic library in Tire-İzmir, Turkey. Through the study, first the library, namely Necip Paşa Library was continuously monitored by measurements of thermo-hygrometric parameters for one year. Then, the measured data were evaluated for the risk assessment based on the control classes of ASHRAE Chapter 21 to evaluate the mechanical, chemical and biological degradation risks. Finally, the conservation-oriented measures were proposed in order to keep the manuscripts under the better conditions. Results suggest that introducing a heating, ventilation and air-conditioning system to the building should be considered as the last option since natural hygrothermal behavior of the library gives reasonably sufficient evidences to prevent the manuscripts from degradations to some extent. Therefore, passive solutions should be given higher priorities not to disturb environmental past of the historic library.
