Article Citation - WoS: 81Citation - Scopus: 107In-Between Spaces and Social Interaction: a Morphological Analysis of Izmir Using Space Syntax(Springer Verlag, 2016) Can, Işın; Can Traunmüller, Işın; Heath, TimThis research tackles the intermediate spaces between buildings and the street, by examining the definition and importance of spatial configuration in relation to urban morphology and social relations. It also analyses how the organisation of in-between space affects social interaction in different urban forms. To understand the complex relations and socio-spatial structure of the city, it is important to use mixed methods. This research utilises various methods to focus on three dissimilar urban morphologies in Izmir, Turkey. Two inner city quarters and one modern housing estate of middle- and high-income groups are compared using space syntax analysis and snapshot observations. These neighbourhoods are selected according to their syntax measures from more integrated to segregated neighbourhoods in the axial analysis. And for a detailed zoomed-in analysis, similar diameter areas are covered for observations. Subsequently, activity patterns are observed at different times of the day, one weekday and one Sunday in three cases. In each neighbourhood, syntactic measures of all selected streets are correlated with these recorded activities. This study reveals that connectivity of streets is important for supplying niches that trigger long-duration activities and social interaction. In modern estates, stationary activities are not correlated strong enough with movement as it is in inner city neighbourhoods. Additionally, in-between spaces increase the frequency of social interaction and co-presence of people particularly in more integrated areas. However, this is only one element in developing sense of community. Further research is needed especially in correlating space syntax with environmental issues, as well as people’s behaviour.Article Citation - WoS: 16Citation - Scopus: 20Application of Space Syntax in Neighbourhood Park Research: an Investigation of Multiple Socio-Spatial Attributes of Park Use(Routledge, 2023) Can Traunmüller, Işın; İnce Keller, İrem; Şenol, FatmaThis case study investigates the actual park use as determined by the socio-spatial attributes of neighbourhoods and parks. As a contribution to the research about park accessibility, it integrates the space syntax analysis with the observation-based fieldwork data about the attributes of neighbourhoods, parks, and park users in 42 parks of 2 adjacent neighbourhoods in Izmir City (Turkey). With its syntactic measures (connectivity, integration, and choice), the study analysis describes the street configuration around these neighbourhood parks. Also, 3 multiple regression analyses are deployed to examine how the syntactic data along with the other neighbourhood and park attributes affect the number of users observed in 42 parks. The study contributes to the research about space syntax tools for analysing the organisational logic of parks in the neighbourhoods while also integrating other socio-spatial attributes of parks.Master Thesis Represantation of Urban Space in Cinema: a Review of Films in Izmir Between 1950-2016(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2020) Eyecioğlu, Hilal; Can Traunmüller, Işın; Can Traunmüller, IşınCinema in Turkey, which dates back to the beginning of the 20th century, has been a platform to reflect the images of the changing cities that have been affected by the cultural and economic transformations in the society. The purpose of this study is to examine the city of İzmir and its urban space characteristics as representations in cinema. Therefore, the scenes in the movies have been analyzed according to the representation of urban spaces in different periods, daily life presented in the scenes, as well as the transformation of urban spaces since 1950s. There are three stages in the study. Firstly, the films which were shot in İzmir by Turkish filmmakers have been listed. Then, as a determining factor, the movies which were shot in the urban spaces of İzmir have been considered. This study focuses on the movies which were shot within the boundary of the city. Secondly, the period between 1950 and 2016 has been divided into three sections. Films have been divided into periods according to the representation styles and subjects of films in between1950-2016. The reason for this is that the films, in which the subject, location representation, space typology, social and cultural life, etc. are similar, have been collected and examined together in a period. Thirdly, the symbolic urban spaces which are frequently at the foreground of the movies have been evaluated according to their transformations of morphological-social, visual-temporal and functional features. Consequently, this study contributes to the existing literature as it examines relation between the city and cinema through a large scale covering over 100 movies. It analyses the relationship between the represented urban spaces, and the development and transformation of the city on the basis of the urban history of İzmir. The results of the analyses have been discussed within the framework developed by Carmona et. al, under morphological-social, visual-temporal and functional dimensions of urban spaces. Keywords: Urban Public Space and Cinema, Cinema and the City, Representation of Urban Space in Cinema.Article Citation - Scopus: 7Transformation in a Housing-Design Story: Reading the Spatial Typologies of Apartment Projects in Hatay-Izmir(İstanbul Teknik Üniversitesi, 2018) Yaylalı Yıldız, Berna; Ek, Fatma İpek; Can, IşınThe politics of central government or incentives determine new design-systems of housing plots as well as housing units. Especially after the enactment of the law of urban regeneration for risky areas, regeneration of areas under disaster risk, there has been an acceleration in knocking down old buildings and constructing new ones in inner cities. Thus, this paper focuses on the changes in housing typologies in Hatay-Izmir, in terms of space syntax parameters through the time period 1960-2000, and interprets the final plan-solutions within the perspective of urban regeneration. By accelerating implementations of the urban transformation projects in Hatay region, alternative plan-typologies coming from the past have undergone the so-called “re-design and transformation” process; however, they have actually been substituted by the “never-changing” plan-templates of the apartment typology. We will examine these changes in plan typologies and spatial organisations of the mentioned apartment-projects on the same plots by utilizing the method of space syntax and visibility analysis (VGA). Transformations in spatial configuration in two periods are interpreted through their relationships to shifts in meaning of privacy and daily life represented by degree of permeability and connectivity of housing-unit-plans based on spatial analysis. © 2018, Istanbul Teknik Universitesi, Faculty of Architecture. In Turkey, development plans and policies often neglect the organization of space between indoor and outdoor areas. However, previous research has shown that the organization of space between buildings has an important impact on social interaction. Although modern housing estates, with their lack of in between spaces (i.e., spaces that are neither completely private nor public) compared with traditional and mixed-use neighborhoods, support introverted lifestyles, the results of this empirical analysis refuted the hypothesis that modern housing estates would exhibit a reduced sense of community. The outcomes of this study support the arguments developed by urban sociologists and environmental psychologists who claim that physical space may provide for social interactions but not necessarily for a sense of community.Book Review Mapping Detroit: Land, Community and Shaping a City(Taylor & Francis, 2015) Can, IşınMapping Detroit is not merely a book which depicts the physical transformation of a post-industrial city through various maps illustrating the causes of social and economical decline. With the significant contribution of the editors, urban designer Beckering, planner and community life observer Thomas and their colleagues, it makes a profound contribution to the subject of how spatial evolution of a city is brought about. Detroit, as it is discussed throughout the book, is an interesting case/model, not only among American cities but also in the different continents of the world. The introduction compares Detroit with other cities throughout the world, such as Berlin, Moscow and Birmingham among others, in terms of its spatial organization and population loss.Master Thesis Transformation of Public Space: a Case of Konak Square, Izmir(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2007) Can, Işın; Saygın, NicelRecently public spaces world-wide have regained their significance through image-led regeneration projects under the control of private or public authorities in order to recreate the image of the city. In addition to this, cities start to use these projects en route for taking place in the competition of becoming a .World City.. This thesis tackles with the problem of transformation of public spaces into quasipublic spaces through the impacts of globalization and regeneration projects along with the issue that these spaces are becoming products of image-led projects in spite of community-based projects. The aim of this study is to find out how local authorities of Turkish cities are reshaping public spaces of their cities as well as how these regenerated spaces correspond with the community needs. On the other hand, to discuss in what points Konak Square, the historical town centre of zmir, opposes or matches with the issues in the literature in terms of its degree of publicness whether it is a true-public space or not. In this regard, recently refurbished Konak Square in the centre of zmir, which has experienced various transformations under the control of public authorities, has been evaluated from the perspective of the user and local authorities. For this purpose, an interview has been conducted with the zmir Metropolitan Municipality that oversaw the implementation of the project and Konak Square.s role in construction of zmir.s image has been examined. Besides using postoccupancy evaluation method, systematic evaluation of existing or designed outdoor spaces-buildings, observations and questionnaires have been used as research methods of this study. Later findings of the study have been assessed through the successfulness criteria for public spaces (uses and activities, comfort and image, access and linkage, sociability). Consequently, despite the public space examples from abroad, partnership between public and private as well as public participation do not exist in refurbishment of Konak Square. Konak Square is totally under the control and maintenance of public sector. However, recent project could not entirely accomplish the successfulness criteria for public spaces but it is not a quasi public space either.Conference Object Citation - Scopus: 10The Rationale Behind Growth Patterns: Socio-Spatial Configuration of Izmir, Turkey 1700s - 2010(Space Syntax Laboratory,The Bartlett School of Architecture, 2015) Can, Işın; İnce, İrem; Yamu, ClaudiaIzmir, which the recent excavations have shown to be an 8000-year-old city, has gone through various stages in its development process. It was an important harbour city located on Turkey's west coast, triggering commerce between east and west. When the inner harbour was revitalized in the 17th century, trade activities increased and the city became an even more popular destination for Levantines1. By the 19th century, therefore, ̄zmir s morphology was defined by its cosmopolitan structure, especially where the historical centre emerged. The urban pattern changed drastically during the period between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20 century. In each period, intrinsic and extrinsic socio-spatial dynamics including natural and man-made disasters, planning decisions, and the exchange of Greek and Turkish immigrants determined the growth processes of the city. This study investigates the generative rules of Izmir's urban structure by looking at nine different periods based on intrinsic and extrinsic dynamics. These periods were chosen according to the availability of historical maps and data. We observed morphological changes throughout the 1700s and the years 1836, 1856, 1876, 1885, 1905, 1922, 1941, and 2010. In order to analyse urban transformation and growth processes coupled with underlying indicators, this study uses segment angular analysis. Socio-spatial dynamics are discussed for each period. This paper aims to reveal how intrinsic and extrinsic phenomena shape urban form in cities. By looking at a hybrid city like Izmir incorporating radial, orthogonal and organic patterns, this study tries to understand urban transformation over time using space syntax analysis.Book Part An Evaluation of Measuring the Publicness Level of Interiors in Public Building Design: Visual Graph Analysis (vga) Approach(IGI Global, 2021) Aykutlar, Pelin; Kutucu, Seçkin; Can Traunmüller, IşınThis study examines the publicness level of the interior spaces of public buildings. As a method, VGA (visual graph analysis) is used for analyzing the early design phases of selected municipal service buildings. In this study, the authors utilized from VGA for quantifying the publicness level of the two selected architectural competitions of municipality buildings. The method allows us analyzing the floor plans of each project in obtaining an eventual assessment of permeability and accessibility which give an idea of the levels of publicness comparatively. Subsequently, representation parameters are compared under two main criteria: connectivity and integration. The aim of the study is to understand the level of publicness and efficiency of spatial settings for the users circulating in the public buildings, which have dissimilar plan schemes. This method would be used by the designers for early design stage and provide useful feedback for understanding the level of accessibility and permeability of the structures and adjust their schemes accordingly.Article Citation - WoS: 4Citation - Scopus: 3Do Perceptions of Neighbourhood Change Match Objective Reality?(Routledge, 2020) Durmaz Drinkwater, Sıdıka Bahar; Platt, S.; Can Traunmüller, IşınThis study analyses neighbourhood change, its impact on the character of Soho, and to what extent perceptions of change match objective reality. Focusing on three streets (Berwick, Old Compton and Wardour Streets), the research (2008–2018) compares objective evidence of ground floor uses with the perceptions of people living and working in Soho. There was a close match between perceptions and objective measures of change on 4 out of 7 indicators: type of use, business name, locality and business ethnicity. The paper discusses these changes in terms of commercial gentrification that threatens Soho’s character. © 2020, © 2020 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.
