    Reconsidering extra time-like dimensions
(Springer Verlag, 2006) Erdem, Recai; Ün, Cem Salih
In this study we reconsider the phenomenological problems related to tachyonic modes in the context of extra time-like dimensions. First we reconsider a lower bound on the size of extra time-like dimensions and improve on the conclusion in the literature. Next we discuss the issues of spontaneous decay of stable fermions through tachyonic decays and disappearance of fermions due to tachyonic contributions to their self-energies. We find that the tachyonic modes due to extra time-like dimensions are less problematic than the tachyonic modes in the usual 4-dimensional setting because the most troublesome Feynman diagrams are forbidden once the conservation of momentum in the extra time-like dimensions is imposed.

Particle Physics Processes in Cosmology Through an Effective Minkowski Space Formulation and the Limitations of the Method
(Springer, 2021) Erdem, Recai; Gültekin, Kemal
We introduce a method where particle physics processes in cosmology may be calculated by the usual perturbative flat space quantum field theory through an effective Minkowski space description at small time intervals provided that the running of the effective particle masses are sufficiently slow. We discuss the necessary conditions for the applicability of this method and illustrate the method through a simple example. This method has the advantage of avoiding the effects of gravitational particle creation in the calculation of rates and cross sections i.e. giving directly the rates and the cross sections due to the scatterings or the decay processes.

A Way To Get Rid of Cosmological Constant and Zero-Point Energy Problems of Quantum Fields Through Metric Reversal Symmetry
(IOP Publishing Ltd., 2008) Erdem, Recai
In this paper, a framework is introduced to remove the huge discrepancy between the empirical value of the cosmological constant and the contribution to the cosmological constant predicted from the vacuum energy of quantum fields. An extra-dimensional space with metric reversal symmetry and R2 gravity (that reduces to the usual R gravity after integration over extra dimensions) is considered to this end. The resulting four-dimensional energy-momentum tensor (obtained after integration over extra dimensions) consists of terms that contain off-diagonally coupled pairs of Kaluza-Klein modes. This, in turn, generically results in the vanishing of the vacuum expectation value of the energy-momentum tensor for quantum fields, and offers a way to solve the problem of huge contribution of quantum fields to the vacuum energy density.

Correction To: “curved Space and Particle Physics Effects on the Formation of Bose–einstein Condensation Around a Reissner–nordstrøm Black Hole”
(Springer, 2022) Erdem, Recai; Demirkaya, Betül; Gültekin, Kemal
After this correction Fig. 1 in [1] is replaced by Fig. 1 above which is essentially the same as the one in [1]. Figure 2 in [1] now becomes irrelevant. Figure 3 in [1] is replaced by Fig. 2 above which is essentially the same as the one in [1].

Towards the Solution of Cosmological Constant and Zero Point Energy Problems Through Metric Reversal Symmetry
(IOP Publishing Ltd., 2009) Erdem, Recai
In this talk I review my studies on metric reversal symmetry and their further implications. The talk is mainly concentrated on the relevance of the metric reversal symmetry to the solutions of the cosmological constant and zero point energies. However the use of metric reversal symmetry to hide higher Kaluza-Klein modes at the scales larger than the size of extra dimensions is also discussed, and speculations on its possible relevance to Pauli-Villars and Lee-Wick model are also briefly mentioned.

Curved Space and Particle Physics Effects on the Formation of Bose-Einstein Condensation Around a Reissner-Nordstrom Black Hole
(Springer, 2021) Erdem, Recai; Demirkaya, Betül; Gültekin, Kemal
We consider two scalar fields interacting through a chi*chi phi*phi term in the presence of a Reissner-Nordstrom black hole. Initially, only chi particles are present. We find that the produced phi particles are localized in a region around the black hole and have a tendency toward condensation provided that phi particles are much heavier than the chi particles. We also find that such a configuration is phenomenologically viable only if the scalars and the black hole have dark electric charges.

Dark Energy Mechanisms in the Context of Extra Dimensional Models
(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2011) Yağmurcukardeş, Mehmet; Erdem, Recai
Dark energy is the simplest and the most standart explanation to account for the observed accelerated expansion of the universe. In this thesis we use the term 'dark energy' in its standart meaning i.e. a field or fluid that is responsible for the cosmic acceleration in the frame work of general relativity. Meanwhile extra dimensions is an attractive framework to understand many otherwise unexplained physical phenomena in a clear, simple formulation. Therefore the study of extra dimensional cosmological models is an attractive area of study. In this thesis we have considered viability of extra dimensional cosmological models in the light of the accelerated expansion of the universe. We have confirmed the results of studies that have shown the incompatibility of a broad class of extra dimensional cosmological models with a dark energy of an equation of state close to that of cosmological constant. We have discussed also possible theoritical and vational ways to avoid the no-go theorems for extra dimensional cosmological models as well.

Possibility of an Additional Source of Time Reversal Violation for Neutrinos
    (DMFA zaloznistvo, 2002) Erdem,R.
We show that neutral fermions may have an additional source of time reversal violation by associating time reversal with gauge group representations of fermions through the method of group extensions as in the case of parity. This provides a new source of time reversal violation for neutral particles. © 2002 DMFA zaloznistvo. All rights reserved.

Fermion Families and Chirality Through Extra Dimensions
    (Springer Verlag, 2002) Erdem, Recai
We give a simple model to explain the origin of fermion families and chirality through the use of a domain wall-anti-domain wall pair placed in a five dimensional space-time. Higher dimensional spaces have been revived in the last years by the hope that the extra space dimensions other than the usual three dimensions may be experimentally accessible in the near future...

It Is Sufficient To Set the Cosmological Constant To Zero or To a Small Number at an Initial Time
    (TUBITAK, 2016) Erdem, Recai
I point out a simple but usually overlooked fact about the cosmological constant problem: to solve the cosmological constant problem it is sufficient to find a symmetry or mechanism that sets the cosmological constant to zero or to a tiny value at some time in the past, provided that general relativity is the relevant theory of gravity, and the energy-momentum tensor (excluding the part of the form of a cosmological constant) is conserved. The relevant symmetry or mechanism need not be applicable today. Any additional cosmological constant term induced by a phase transition in the energy-momentum tensor in this case is compensated by a shift in the cosmological constant term of gravitational origin.
