Article Citation - WoS: 1Citation - Scopus: 1Traditional Water Harvesting Systems in Climate Change Adaptation: Insights From a Semi-Arid Mediterranean Village(Middle East Technical Univ, 2025) Gercek, Deniz; Yuceer, Hulya; Gonulal, Yasemin Ozcan; Ustuk, Ozan; Uzelli, Taygun; Guler, Selen; Baba, AlperTraditional water harvesting systems (WHS), developed over centuries by past civilizations, have long played a crucial role in addressing water scarcity in semi-arid regions. Although these systems have been largely neglected with the expansion of modern water infrastructure, they remain a valuable heritage containing significant knowledge and practices that are still relevant today, particularly in overcoming water management challenges in the face of climate change. Although traditional WHSs have been studied across various regions, their forms and functions vary significantly due to unique climatic, geological, and cultural conditions. In the Mediterranean context, small-scale WHSs have received comparatively limited attention-particularly studies that integrate both their revitalization for contemporary use and their historical and cultural significance. This study aims to help bridge that gap and contribute the existing literature by focusing on the WHSs in Barbaros, a semi-arid village on the Aegean coast of Turkey. Barbaros is particularly unique due to its special geological conditions, as the porous soil makes water retention difficult, which adds to the importance of traditional WHSs. In this context, the main objective of this research is to comprehensively assess these systems, by considering the area's topography, geological features, WHS construction techniques, and local knowledge transmitted across generations. This multidisciplinary approach, combining a literature review, field observations, expert surveys and interviews with long-time residents, enables a comprehensive analysis of the typologies, current state and socio-cultural evolution of these systems. A thorough understanding of these systems is essential to assess their resilience and relevance for climate change adaptation, especially with regard to drought management. The study concludes that, despite their partial abandonment, the traditional WHSs in Barbaros offer valuable insights into sustainable water management and demonstrate their potential as practical models for addressing today's water challenges. Master Thesis Conservation Strategies Against Climate Change Effects on Coastal Historic Settlements: the Case of Kuşadasi Citadel(01. Izmir Institute of Technology, 2023) Çıkıkçı, Süleyman Burçak; Yüceer, Hülya; Baba, AlperClimate change is currently one of the most essential and fastest-growing threats to people and their heritage around the world. Heritage assets and sites are vulnerable to the impacts of climate change due to their age and being in constant interaction with the environment and weathering processes. In particular, historic coastal settlements are highly vulnerable to climate change effects due to their proximity to the sea, which may lead to coastal erosion, changing sea levels, abrupt changes in air temperatures, storms and floods that may damage or even lead to the disappearance of these areas. Thus, developing resilience through tailor-made conservation strategies for historic coastal settlements is crucial to transfer them to future generations. In this context, this study discusses the effects of climate change through the example of Kuşadası Citadel, a historical coastal settlement located in the Mediterranean Basin, which is expected to be highly vulnerable to climate change. The study identified the potential conservation problems that may arise from the effects of climate change on the listed and 'façade to be conserved' immovable cultural assets of the Kuşadası Citadel. Accordingly, the study has developed its method. Area-specific climate change impacts were determined, vulnerability and risk analyses were performed, and administrative, site and building-scale conservation strategies were developed. In conclusion, strategies have been developed for the Kuşadası Citadel, which is highly vulnerable to the effects of climate change, to protect it from these effects at different scales. It is an example of coastal settlement research in the context of climate change adaptation and gives guidance for local-scale conservation efforts.Article Citation - WoS: 1Citation - Scopus: 1Adaptive Reuse of Industrial Heritage in Crises Zones: the Soap Factories in the Levant(Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2025) Saifi, Yara; Zawawi, Zahraa; Yuceer, HulyaThis paper articulates critical considerations for policies related to the adaptive reuse of industrial heritage, particularly in contexts affected by crises, such as conflicts, wars, and natural disasters using the soap factories of the Levant as a case study. It critically investigates the role of adaptive reuse in conserving industrial heritage buildings impacted by crises. The Levant provides a unique context for examining the intersection of cultural heritage and resilience; soap factories, reflective of the region's olive-oil-rich history and industrial legacy dating back to the 18th century, symbolise the conservation challenges and opportunities posed by ongoing regional conflict. The study systematically analyses existing literature on adaptive reuse and questions conventional paradigms in crisis environments, particularly the suitability of standard transformations such as converting industrial heritage into museums or exhibition spaces. Instead, it aims to broaden the dialogue on adaptive reuse by offering context-sensitive policy recommendations. These strategies balance the imperatives of heritage conservation, sustainable development, and contemporary community demands, contributing to a nuanced understanding of industrial heritage preservation in crisis-affected regions.Article Citation - WoS: 3Citation - Scopus: 5Assessing Community Awareness for Participatory Conservation of Cultural Heritage: the Case of Tepebağ Tumulus and Its Surroundings in Adana Turkey(Emerald Group Publishing, 2022) Umar, Nur; Yüceer, Hülya; Aydın, RozelinPurpose: The purpose of this paper is to identify the levels of awareness of locals about conservation and cultural heritage, in order to develop suggestions and methods for them to participate in these processes. Design/methodology/approach: The method of research is based on face-to-face surveys, mainly questionnaires that were conducted with 1,200 local people. The data obtained was evaluated using the SPSS 25.0.0 V program. Findings: The results show that locals mainly find appropriate the assets that reflect their culture but disregard archaeological remains. The participation of locals in the conservation process will end up benefiting them economically. Social implications: It is currently accepted that effective conservation cannot be achieved unless its technical considerations are considered together with social and cultural aspects. Ensuring the participation of local people in the conservation process has proved to be important in the development of holistic and sustainable outcomes. In places, where multilayered cultural heritage exists and local residents are from different cultural backgrounds, a detailed assessment of cultural heritage perception that involves local people gains significance. Originality/value: It is project-based in the sense of adding the dimension of community awareness to the practice of cultural heritage conservation in the multilayered and multicultural places.Review Citation - WoS: 8Citation - Scopus: 11A Literature Review on the Management of Underwater Cultural Heritage(Elsevier, 2023) Bulut, Nihan; Yüceer, HülyaManaging cultural heritage is difficult, even when presented with many opportunities. The management of underwater cultural heritage (UCH) expands these challenges, as issues such as mapping, monitoring, access, presentation, and ownership can become more complex. This article reviews the existing literature on theoretical research and various case studies in order to establish common themes on the management of UCH. Initially, a keyword search was carried out in two of the most extensive scientific databases. Publications were reviewed according to several criteria. Various data have been obtained, such as the change in the number of publications over the years, which journals are more interested in the subject, which topics are at the forefront, which places are preferred for case studies, and who are more likely to conduct research. The results show that the studies on the management of UCH mainly focus on evaluating the current management examples and their issues, policy development, legislation, and documentation of the sites. The cultural heritage in the case studies varies from archaeological and architectural remains to shipwrecks and, sometimes, movable objects, despite the emphasis on in-situ built heritage in the search criteria. Meanwhile, the researchers are primarily from universities in Western countries such as the United States and the United Kingdom. Additionally, many publications evaluate national policies and emphasize the importance of public participation, interpretation, and access. While still not much compared to land heritage, the number of studies has increased over the years. As the results of the review are discussed, suggestions are offered for possible future publications.Article Legal Aspects for the Conservation of Rural Built Heritage: a Systematic Literature Review(Emerald Group Publishing Ltd, 2025) Ilbey, Zeynep Ozkaya; Yuceer, HulyaPurpose - This study aims to provide a base for the policy-making process of rural built heritage conservation by systematically analysing existing legal aspects and policies in the literature. The primary objective is to help the policy-making process in countries that lack specific guidelines for the conservation of rural built heritage. It is also intended to play a role in the development of existing policies. Design/methodology/approach - The paper undertakes a comprehensive and systematic review of literature through 81 publications pertaining to the legal dimensions of RBH conservation. It processes the data obtained and presents it as bibliometric information utilizing VOS-viewer and Bibliometrix. The literature review results and data are associated with international regulations and documents. As a result, principles that will be helpful to the policy-making process are produced. Findings - The study reveals that interest in the subject has increased since 2018, mainly due to the influence of international charters, documents and developments in the field. The literature review shows that existing laws address the issue broadly rather than focusing directly on RBH. However, current policies, management plans and recommendations referred to in the literature are more closely related to RBH. Nonetheless, notable provisions in laws, international documents and local policies contribute to generating policy principles on the subject. Originality/value - The study fills a gap in the literature by examining RBH conservation from a legal perspective, systematically presenting the relevant literature to researchers, policymakers and other stakeholders in various contexts.Article Citation - WoS: 1Citation - Scopus: 1New Buildings in Historic Settings: Revisiting Renzo Piano's Design Approach(Routledge Journals, Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2025) Demir, Hatice Aysegul; Yuceer, HulyaContemporary design in historic settings is a controversial issue where it impacts on an existing historic context. Conservation charters and scholarly literature on architectural designs within the historic environment provide preliminary insights and guidance that necessitate further elaboration and development. The aim of this study is to generate a more detailed and clearer insight into design strategies that inform the design of new buildings in historic locations through the work of the architect Renzo Piano. From the Centre Pompidou to his most recently built & Idot;stanbul Modern, he has seven new designs in the cities of Paris, Valetta, Athens, Beirut, and & Idot;stanbul. These buildings, six of which are in the settings of UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the seventh within the historic site of Beirut, are described individually to trace the architect's design approach. Seven categories have been identified, from the use of an existing square to the scale, form, view creation, transparency preferences, opening designs, and colour choices revealing strategies have been found compatible with their historic settings. By listing them, seven core principles are proposed as policy guidelines.Article Citation - WoS: 1Citation - Scopus: 1Profiling the Bacterial Diversity in Historic Limestone From Anazarbos Archaeological Site by Advanced Molecular and Spectroscopic Techniques(University of the Aegean, 2022) Aydın, Rozelin; İpekci, Emre; Daday, Mine Taykurt; Yüceer, Hülya; Böke, HasanThe architectural remains as well as sculptures, mosaics, and other artifacts in the archaeological sites are mostly made of stone and susceptible to biodeterioration by microorganisms. Bacterial communities are known to have the most effective role in biological deterioration in stones. The ancient city of Anazarbos (Anavarza), chosen as the study area, is the 1st Degree Archaeological Site in the vicinity of Dilekkaya Village, Kozan District, about 70 km north of Adana. The microbiological, chemical, mineralogical, and microstructural properties of stone samples taken from different places were studied in this research. Samples were taken from i) where no deterioration occurred, ii) where different forms of deterioration were observed, iii) archaeological deposits, iii) archaeological deposits that came from deteriorated stone samples area. Spectroscopic, thermal, and microscopic techniques applied included: X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Scanning Electron Microscopy-Energy Dispersive System (SEM-EDS), Thermogravimetric Analysis/Differential Thermal Analysis (TG/DTA). The bacterial biodiversity was analyzed by the application of Illumina-based next-generation sequencing methods. Results show intense biological colonisations with clay minerals on limestone surfaces. A patina of clay minerals was observed on newly excavated stone surfaces, while biological colonisations have not yet intensified. The metabarcoding analysis showed 15 bacterial phyla. The Proteobacteria and Actinobacteria were the most abundant phyla in both stones and archaeological deposits samples. Human activity (intensive agriculture, animal husbandry), accumulation of rainwater in excavated areas adversely affects stones, which leads to acceleration of biological deterioration in stones. Thus, all features of the site require multi-faceted studies prior to unearthing of archaeological remains.
