Book Part Greenmetric Journey of Izmir Institute of Technology: Agile Strategies Towards a Green Campus(Springer Science and Business Media Deutschland GmbH, 2026) Keskin, E.; Ökten, H.E.; Akpinar, İ.; Baran, Y.Recently, there has been growing attention towards sustainable approaches on university campuses through disseminating international evaluation systems, the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings (GM) attracting specific attention in particular. Türkiye is one of the countries where the number of participating universities in GM rises annually at a significant pace. Most of the large-scale university campuses in Türkiye were already built by the 1990s, which led these campuses to adapt themselves to higher standards for sustainability. In this context, Izmir Institute of Technology (IZTECH), a 33-year-old university, has applied for the GM with its Gülbahçe Campus since 2020. This paper aims to reveal IZTECH’s institutional agile sustainability strategy, energetic and collective processes, and good practices in the last five years while examining the outcomes through the GM’s evaluation of six assessment criteria. In this regard, the sustainability practices of IZTECH have been monitored since 2019 and compared to how the developments have improved the GM scores for the past 3 years. This study, focusing on the IZTECH campus through historical, social, educational, and technological perspectives, unveils the barriers between developing and implementing sustainability practices and examines the cohesion between GM scores and annual reports of campus activities for further projections towards a greener campus. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2026.Article Citation - WoS: 1Staging Nişantaşı: Cultural Conflicts and Ideological Representations of Urban Space in Turkish Tv Culture(Springer, 2025) Catalbas, Zeynep Ceylan Gezer; Akpınar, İpek; Akpinar, IpekThis paper examines how urban spaces become sites of ideological contestation through their representation in popular media, focusing specifically on Ni & scedil;anta & scedil;& imath;, a historically significant neighborhood in Istanbul that embodies the class tensions within T & uuml;rkiye's modernization narrative. Drawing on cultural geography as a theoretical framework, the study analyzes how this distinctive urban space functions as both physical setting and symbolic element in post-2000 Turkish television dramas. Since the expansion of private broadcasting, these TV series have emerged as powerful agents in shaping public consciousness about space, class, and identity. Through semiotic analysis of selected programs, this research reveals how Ni & scedil;anta & scedil;& imath;'s portrayal constructs and reinforces social class distinctions in contemporary Turkish society. The findings demonstrate that urban geography serves as a reflective surface for cultural and social conflict, with television representations amplifying Ni & scedil;anta & scedil;& imath;'s multi-layered spatial identity formed through historical processes, societal dynamics, and personal narratives. By connecting these representations to broader patterns of class differentiation in T & uuml;rkiye, this study contributes to our understanding of how media portrayals of urban spaces simultaneously reflect and reinforce class distinction through collective social imaginaries.Article 21st Century Urban Aesthetics in the Post Critical Age: Sanart Publication(Istanbul Teknik Universitesi, Faculty of Architecture, 2025) Kök, S.; Akpinar, İ.This research problematized the relationship between human and the built environment in the 21st century, which it describes as post-critical, and examined the relationship between them in a theoretical framework through aesthetics. Within this framework, it has analyzed selected articles from the proceedings book published by SANART (Association of Aesthetics and Visual Arts). This study has defined aesthetics as a way of relating human beings to their environment. It redefined holistic aesthetic thought through approaches that focus on uncertain, porous, relational boundaries and social processes. With new perspectives that reject the dualism of subject and object, the process associated with the concepts of movement and becoming have been conceptualized through the process of urban experience from the perspective of Manuel DeLanda. This study has analyzed the urban discourses presented in SANART publications with a focus on ’movement’. It has interpreted these movements as a feature of the built environment as it is shaped by the capacities of bodies and space. All rights reserved.Book Part 1960s Tax Law and Non-Muslim Exodus From Istanbul: Turkification of the City(Taylor & Francis, 2023) Akpınar, İpekThis chapter discusses the urban consequences of the expulsion of Istanbul Greeks in 1964. It demonstrates the urban impact of the 16 March 1964 decree that terminated the residence of 12, 000 Greek passport holders in Istanbul (a population of 40, 000 with their relatives), who were given 24 hours to leave the city and allowed to carry only 20 kilograms of belongings or US$22 with them. The event also alarmed many other non-Muslim families to emigrate from Istanbul, while the city was receiving a large influx of immigrants from rural lands due to the growing industrialization and urbanization. Akpinar discusses the urban planning interventions in Istanbul under the Menderes and subsequent governments throughout the 1950s and 1960s as ad-hoc or intentional steps toward Turkification, in which discrimination and the resulting emigration of Istanbul Greeks played a significant part. © 2024 selection and editorial matter, Esra Akcan and Iftikhar Dadi; individual chapters, the contributors.Article Geographies of Place-Affective Trans-Becoming: an Ethnography of Drag in Istanbul(Routledge Journals, Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2025) Ogut, Tuna; Kilickiran, Didem; Akpinar, IpekThis paper presents an ethnographic study of Dudaklar & imath;n Cengi, a drag and queer performing event series in Istanbul, where a community of predominantly trans and non-binary performers create a place of collectivity for self-expression and gender exploration. Drawing on trans and feminist geographical perspectives, we examine how the participants use drag as a way of creating shared imagery, exploring themselves in relation to gender, and producing places in the city through their performances beyond the stage. We conceptualise Dudaklar & imath;n Cengi as a place-as-becoming that emerges from the intensities of social ties, flows, narratives, and sensations. We also propose a geographical understanding of gendered embodiment to account for transness in new spatial ways that enable the interrogation of phenomena that do not immediately yield their relevancy to the category of gender. The data was collected in over three years of presence within the field through situated and reflexive participant observation, informal conversations, in-depth interviews, and the participants' written narratives. We analyse the data with iterative cycles of grounded theory completed with continuous collaborative theorisation with participants. Through this collaborative theorisation, a series of concepts emerge that explain the experiences of the participants: opening drag, collectivising the stage, socialising in drag, urban navigation of gender, and an unfolding sense of drag. Adının aksine sadece gıda değil, kentlinin elektrikli aletlerinden kırtasiye veya kozmetik malzemelerine kadar pek çok gereksinimini karşılayabileceği, kentsel ulaşım ağlarının düğüm noktasında, canlı bir ekonomik yaşama sahip, ancak trafikten güvenliğe kadar pek çok sosyal ve mekansal sorunu bünyesinde barındıran bir kent parçasıdır.Article An Attempt To Read the Change in Aesthetics by Reading Deleuze: the Iaa and Sanart Conferences on Aesthetics(Universidad de Oviedo, 2023) Kök, Saadet; Akpınar, İpekAs a result of processes such as social-political and environmental crises, globalization and innovative technological developments, which are evaluated on the basis of speed and urgency, we are faced with a result-oriented, reductionist, ethical and aesthetic world. This work reveals the relationship between aesthetics and the changing world. In this context, this study, which focuses on the themes of the International Aesthetics Association (IAA) and Aesthetics and Visual Culture Association (SANART) congresses, reads the relationship of aesthetics with our changing world through Gilles Deleuze's 'philosophy of difference'. In this framework, the study chronologically analyzes the relationship between themes and the call for congress papers with Deleuze's terms. The study evaluates the conceptual framework of the congresses of SANART and IAA associations, corresponding to Deleuze's concept of 'system'. The events organized by each association at regular intervals are the 'series' that make up the systems. In this context, the study reads the concepts both in the series they belong to and in their verbal identities in other series. In other words, the study, which analyzes the dynamic and static repetitions of the concepts in congress themes and call texts, questions the fields of external and conceptual difference. The data obtained in this study were categorized and interpreted as series, horizontal series and vertical series.
