Article Citation - Scopus: 1A Cinematic Narration of Urban Segregation Through Migration in Turkey: an Analysis of the Film Block-C Directed by Zeki Demirkubuz(Intellect Ltd., 2025) Aydin, M.F.; Erdoğdu Erkarslan, Özlem; Erkarslan, Ö.; Erkarslan, ÖnderMetropolitan life is always one of the major concerns of modernity as well as the set for the cinematic art. The critical gaze of cinema throws a light on how cities provide various social and architectural contexts for diversified groups as an indispensable part of the scenario. This study delves into the portrayal of metropolitan life in Zeki Demirkubuz’s 1994 film C Blok (Block-C) through the intertwined concepts of spatial alienation, urban segregation and urban migration. Situated within the context of 1990s Istanbul, the film serves as a microcosm for exploring the social and architectural landscape of Turkish modernity. It scrutinizes the interactions between diverse social classes residing in a suburban apartment complex, offering critical insights into how western-style modernization has shaped urban spaces and individual experiences. In this context, the theoretical foundation of this research encompasses the advent of western-style modernization in Turkey, its permeation into societal realms, and the concept of spatial alienation at the social stratum. Moreover, adopting a critical thinking perspective, this study probes the notions of home and house, elucidating their implications for individuality within the framework of spatial alienation. © 2025 Intellect Ltd.Article Türkiye'de Endüstri Ürünleri Tasarımcısında Aranan Niteliklerin Lisans Eğitim Programları ve Kariyer Siteleri Üzerinden Karşılaştırmalı Analizi(Anadolu Üniversitesi, 2011) Erkarslan, Önder; Kaya, N. Despite the large body of literature on innovation as commercialization, there exist several directions in DDI which need to be further explored especially for developing countries like Turkey. In fact, existing studies mostly comprises of the practices of leading design-based companies to further develop the theoretical ground on DDI. By providing insights to the application of DDI theory in developing countries, we aim to enhance the scope of DDI in terms of its drivers affected by design cultures and innovativeness levels of countries. Hence, besides Turkey, this thesis explores the practices of DDI in Sweden as a leading country in terms of its design culture. Differences and commonalities of DDI practices in these countries are analyzed together to define the effects of design culture on DDI. Furniture industry is selected to frame the thesis due to its design focus and ease of application according to other technology based sectors. Through this way, we aim to better compare and contrast the evidences of different countries. An exploratory approach is internalized in which we conduct case study methods to provide evidence to the theory. Semi-structured interviews are realized with designers and designer managers of leading furniture companies of Turkey and Sweden for data enhancement and validation. Through cross-case analysis of national outcomes, we propose additional drivers to DDI theory as product segmentation, activity research, culture research and concept research. Keywords: Design-driven innovation, innovation strategies, innovation of meanings, research for innovation.Master Thesis Redesing of Driver Environment for Rigid Inflatable Boat With Focus on User-Centered Design(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2018) Aşıcı, Burçin; Erkarslan, ÖnderThis thesis focuses on designing some elements of a RIB (Rigid Inflatable Boat), NorthStar 910 RS is a high segment pleasure boat and has been manufacturing for two years by RIBTECH. The driver environment on today’s boat did not design ergonomically, and this project has aimed to design a new driver environment with enhanced ergonomics, user experience and aesthetically compelling for the market. The objective was to produce a product that is implementable in 2018. The project has been studied by using a user-centered design methodology, meaning that all team members have been involved through the product development process to add a design value for users with new solutions suit their needs. The result is a console, seating unit, and hardtop designed for that embraces the importance of ergonomics, user experience, and producibility. These elements have not only integrated all equipment in a user-friendly but also with easy maintenance and easy manufacture abilities. They additionally enable RIBTECH to modify electronic parts of the user interface through time to expand market opportunities as upcoming customers that they can upgrade or update. By using international standards for design, features of ergonomics and ease of production are sufficiently considered throughout the process, that they improve the production process by means of decreased time. This thesis aims to contribute a better understanding of the importance of design methods for the company’s competence in the commercial world and the significance of integration design into the product development process in the early phases.Master Thesis Using Augmented Reality in Vocational Education Programs To Teach Occupational Healt and Safety(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2016) Hülagü, Renk; Erkarslan, ÖnderWhile augmented reality enables us to attach images and information from virtual environment into the real world; technology and computer science enables us to go beyond our limits of visual perception through showing us the world with the information which was not there before. The aim of this research is to design a system that will enhance the awareness of the vocational education students over the topic of occupational health and safety. With the augmented reality system projected on the work surface, the students will be warned when they perform actions that pose a risk, needs caution and may result in accidents. As they are doing it, therefore, they will understand the faultiness of the actions again. In this work, augmented reality is chosen based on two advantages; students will be able to access the information needed, in this project warnings, without looking at directions other than the work surface and there exists lack of study in the topic of augmented reality in the field of industrial design. The research involves a literature review and two case studies in Konak Çınarlı Mesleki ve Teknik Anadolu Lisesi with high school and university students. A system is designed according to findings from these studies. As the result, students’ caution was got and the number of mistakes was decreased. This resulted in decrease in the number of occupational accidents, deaths and financial loss. The project may also become a new method of teaching occupational safety and operation of the machines.Master Thesis Evaluating Adoption of Open Source Tools in Industrial Design Education(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2016) Aykul, Zeynep; Erkarslan, ÖnderOpen source tools can support industrial designers to follow technology and trends easily. If industrial designers start using open source tools in their design processes, they can overcome difficulties, and make the process easier. The first step of research showed that industrial design students have the difficulties in the specific tasks of design process such as design presentation, design research, design decision, concept generation and design documentation. In addition to difficult tasks, reasons of difficulties were also asked to build a connection between open source tools and the solutions of difficulties. In the second step of research, students’ approaches for open source tools’ use were analyzed with presentation and feedback session. However, taking feedback with a questionnaire were not enough to analyze their approach. For this reason, three different studies were designed to find the most effective way to see how industrial design students use open source tools in their design processes. The first two studies were accepted as pilot studies which were re-design workshop and open source tools’ usage in industrial design studio courses. Due to limitations and insufficient outcomes required the third studies which are simulation of open source community. The study aimed to create an effective environment which offers an experience of open source tools with all the elements such as source, sharing, contribution and community. Introduction to Design Thinking Course’ students participated the study in Industrial Product Design Department at Istanbul Technical University. They shared their term project as open source and open source community was created in the classroom. Thus, difficulties of students in the design process were aimed to overcome. The results indicated that students overcome difficulties of “Finding inspiration”, “Express concept correctly and quickly”, “Changing and developing ideas” and “Decision skills”.Master Thesis Computer Aided Design Program "çizen" and Designers Interaction and Efficiency Analysis; Development of Intelligent Interface Suggestions(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2020) Zengin Bintaş, Gül Çiçek; Erkarslan, ÖnderSoftware is not only a rapidly developing and indispensable tool today but also the most prominent driving force of digital transformation. Thanks to the innovation studies carried out in the software of these programs, the productivity growth is achieved in the design processes, and the errors arising from the design could be reduced to a minimum. In Turkey, since 2010, working on CAD development have been initiated; the domestic and national program called “ÇİZEN,” has been developed for sheet metal forming design. In this study, new techniques and innovative methods were performed in the ÇİZEN program, which was developed and personalized specifically to a particular sector and then, User Experience Survey was conducted. The study aimed to design a simple and intelligent interface by clearly determining the needs and expectations of sheet metal designers and the user's program experience. Within the scope of this objective, user experience surveys were conducted with the participation of 14 users. In this context, the users were asked pre-configured and open-ended questions, and by giving the users specific tasks, the focus points in the program were revealed with heat maps through the Eye Tracker device. As a result of the finalization of pre-test studies and obtaining eye-tracking data, the final-test phase was initiated; and after the general opinions about the program were received, System Usability and Nonverbal Pictorial Scale research was conducted. The data obtained from the research results were interpreted, evaluated, and suggestions were developed under three main headings: productivity, simplicity/functionality, and interface.Article Mismatch Between Classroom Furniture and Student Body Dimensions: Case of İzmir(2019) Kaya, Nazife Aslı; Erkarslan, ÖnderThe aim of the research is to determine the anthropometric measures of school children aged 12-13, who live in Izmir, Turkey, in order to propose anthropometrically appropriate school furniture (desk and chair), and to compare findings with the available classroom furniture produced according to Standards of Classroom Furniture, published by Republic Of Turkey General Directorate of Primary Education to determine potential mismatches.
