Kinematic and Dynamic Analysis of a New Type of Spatial 6-Dof Parallel Structure Manipulator
(China Machine Press, 2004) Alizade, Rasim; Bayram, Çağdaş
This paper addresses the dynamics and kinematics of a 6xUPS type parallel structure manipulator that consists of six branches and a platform. The problem of forward and inverse displacement analysis is considered on the base of solution of the forward displacement problem for each UPS branch as a serial manipulator. Basic dynamics equations have also been considered. The values of reduced moments and forces have been determined that provides the required input forces and moments. Thus, we deal with inverse dynamics problems. Dynamic model of this type of spatial manipulator is described by a system of six non-linear differential equations of second order with applying Lagrange-Euler methods.

Analytical Synthesis of Function Generating Spherical Four-Bar Mechanism for the Five Precision Points
(Elsevier Ltd., 2005) Alizade, Rasim I.; Alizade, Rasim; Kilit, Özgür
This paper presents an analytical method for synthesis of function generating spherical 4R mechanisms for the five precision points. For the design requirements an additional parameter, reference value of output angle, ψ0, was added to angular link length parameters, α i(i = 1, ..., 4). In the dimensional synthesis procedure, a novel approach of polynomial approximation method was proposed to determine these five design parameters. Using this method, a set of five non-linear equations was easily transformed into a set of fifteen linear equations. Hence, the problem was reduced to the solution of a cubic polynomial equation. Moreover, a graphical method in a CAD environment is proposed to verify the solutions. © 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Structural Synthesis of Euclidean Platform Robot Manipulators With Variable General Constraints
(Elsevier Ltd., 2008) Alizade, Rasim; Can, Fatih Cemal; Gezgin, Erkin
In this paper, new method for structural synthesis of Euclidean platform robot manipulators with variable general constraints (EPRM) is presented. Three dimensional motion of the base moving platform is generated by the motion of dyads on the Euclidean planes. Each dyad is connected to the moving base platform by universal, spherical or spherical in torus (St) kinematic pairs. This allows solving the structural synthesis of Euclidean robot manipulators with various DoF and different platform motions. New structural formulations with variable general constraints for the platform motion and the mobility of robot manipulators are presented. The new structural classification of simple structural groups with variable general constraints including platforms, hinges, legs and branch loops from different subspaces and space is also introduced. Moreover, new method for structural synthesis of serial, parallel and serial-parallel EPRM is illustrated along with examples. © 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Least Square Approximate Motion Generation Synthesis of Spherical Linkages by Using Chebyshev and Equal Spacing
(Elsevier Ltd., 2013) Alizade, Rasim; Can, Fatih Cemal; Kilit, Özgür
In this paper, approximate motion synthesis of spherical linkages is presented. Rigid body guidance of a spherical four-bar mechanism is performed by a spherical RR open chain. In the first step, position of a point on rigid body and orientation of a rigid body on a unit sphere are described. Synthesizing function of spherical dyad is derived by means of using unit vectors that describe location of two revolute joints and tip point. Being based on the theory of function approximation and besides the linearization of nonlinear synthesis equations by using superposition method, the design procedure for real solutions of fourth order polynomial equation is developed. In the second step, approximate motion generation synthesis of spherical dyad is presented by using least-square approximation. Chebyshev spacing and equal spacing are used in the determination of poses. In the final step, two numerical examples are given to show how error graph is varied in terms of selected poses. The spherical motion generation synthesis of spherical four-bar mechanism is obtained by the combination of the two real solutions of the synthesis of two spherical dyads. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd.

Structural and Kinematic Synthesis of Overconstrained Mechanisms
(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2012) Selvi, Özgün; Alizade, Rasim
Investigation on overconstrained mechanisms needs attention especially in the structural synthesis. Knowing overconstrained conditions and including them in the design process will help creating manipulators with less degree of freedom (DoF) and more rigidity. Also this knowledge of overconstrained conditions will clarify concept of mobility of the parallel manipulators. Another subject, kinematic synthesis of overconstrained mechanisms, is important because it will allow describing a function, path, or motion with less DoF less number of joints. The aim of this thesis is to describe a generalized approach for structural synthesis and creation of new overconstrained manipulators and to describe a potentially generalizable approach for function and motion generation synthesis of overconstrained mechanism. Moreover, screw theory is investigated as a mathematical base for defining kinematics of overconstrained mechanisms. Also, overconstrained mechanisms are investigated and generation of new mechanisms is introduced with examples. Some mathematical models for the subspace geometries are given. A method for defining overconstrained simple structural groups is introduced and extended to design of manipulators with examples and solid drawings. Linear approximation and least squares approximation methods are used for the function generation and motion generation of overconstrained 6R mechanisms. A gap of describing overconstrained manipulators is filled in the area of structural synthesis. A general methodology is described for structural synthesis, mobility and motion calculations of overconstrained manipulators using simple structural groups. A potentially generalizable method for the kinematic synthesis of overconstrained manipulators is described both for function and motion generation.

Derivation of Input/Output Relationships for the Bennett 6r Linkages Based on the Method of Decomposition
(Springer, 2014) Alizade, Rasim; Kiper, Gökhan; Dede, Mehmet İsmet Can; Uzunoğlu, Emre
The Bennett overconstrained 6R linkages are the double-planar, the double-spherical and the plano-spherical 6R linkages. These mechanisms are obtained by combining simple planar and/or spher-ical mechanisms and then removing one of the common links. This paper presents the derivation of the input/output relationships for these mechanisms using the decomposition method. This method is based on writing the input/output equations for the two imaginary loops comprising the 6R mechanism and then eliminating the imaginary joint variable. It is found that the resulting input/output equations con-tain up to 4th power of trigonometric terms, such as cos4 θ.

    Biokinematic Analysis of Human Body
(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2011) Gezgin, Erkin; Alizade, Rasim
This thesis concentrates on the development of rigid body geometries by using method of intersections, where simple geometric shapes representing revolute (R) and prismatic (P) joint motions are intersected by means of desired space or subspace requirements to create specific rigid body geometries in predefined octahedral fixed frame. Using the methodical approach, space and subspace motions are clearly visualized by the help of resulting geometrical entities that have physical constraints with respect to the fixed working volume. Also, this work focuses on one of the main areas of the fundamental mechanism and machine science, which is the structural synthesis of robot manipulators by inserting recurrent screws into the theory. After the transformation unit screw equations are presented, physical representations and kinematic representations of kinematic pairs with recurrent screws are given and the new universal mobility formulations for mechanisms and manipulators are introduced. Moreover the study deals with the synthesis of mechanisms by using quaternion and dual quaternion algebra to derive the objective function. Three different methods as interpolation approximation, least squares approximation and Chebyshev approximation is introduced in the function generation synthesis procedures of spherical four bar mechanism in six precision points. Separate examples are given for each section and the results are tabulated. Comparisons between the methods are also given. As an application part of the thesis, the most important elements of the human body and skeletal system is investigated by means of their kinematic structures and degrees of freedom. At the end of each section, an example is given as a mechanism or manipulator that can represent the behavior of the related element in the human body.

Structural Design of Parallel Manipulators With General Constraint One
(Elsevier Ltd., 2010) Alizade, Rasim; Selvi, Özgün; Gezgin, Erkin
In this paper structural design of parallel manipulators with general constraint one regarding angular and linear-angular conditions are considered. Four known overconstrained mechanisms with angular and two new designs with linear-angular conditions are presented. 14 structural groups and end effector chains in subspace λ = 5 are examined. New formulations and definitions of constructing overconstrained manipulators are described. Using examined structural groups, all architectures of subspace λ = 5 parallel manipulators with revolute joints and single-loop are introduced via structural bonding.

Design of a Mars Rover Suspension Mechanism
(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2004) Barlas, Fırat; Alizade, Rasim
It is obvious that rovers are important vehicles of today.s solar system exploration. Most of the rover designs have been developed for Mars and Moon surface in order to understand the geological history of the soil and rocks. Exploration operations need high speed and long distance traversal in a short mission period due to environmental effects, climate and communication restrictions. Several mechanisms have been suggested in recent years for suspensions of rovers on rough terrain. Although their different mechanisms have found a widespread usage in mobile robotics, their low operation speed is still a challenging problem. In this research, a new suspension mechanism has been designed and its kinematic analysis results were discussed. Standard rocker-bogie suspension mechanism, which has been developed in the late 1990.s, has excellent weight distribution for different positions on rough terrain. New design, mostly similar to rocker-bogie suspension system, has a natural advantage with linear bogie motion which protects the whole system from getting rollover during high speed operations. This improvement increases the reliability of structure on field operations and also enables the higher speed exploration with same obstacle height capacity as rocker-bogie. In this thesis study, new bogie mechanism consisted of double-lambda mechanisms, which has been firstly presented by Pafnuty Lvovich Chebyshev in 1869, is solved by analytically to define the positions and singular configurations. A new structural synthesis formula also has been introduced for such suspension mechanisms with lower and higher kinematic pairs. By using structural synthesis methods, a suspension mechanism has been designed with double-lambda mechanism. Equivalent force and moment functions were also derived with equation of motion method. The results are confirmed with the computer analysis made by Visual Nastran 4D®. For this purpose, a computer model has been constructed and assembled with the same design parameters of NASA Mars Exploration Rovers (MER1 and MER2).

Analysis and Synthesis of Parallel Manipulators
(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2008) Can, Fatih Cemal; Alizade, Rasim
In this study, novel parallel manipulators are introduced for industrial and medical applications. New methods are developed for the structural synthesis of Euclidean platform robot-manipulators with variable general constraints (EPRM). New mechanical structures such as serial, parallel and serial-parallel EPRM are designed along with proposed method.A new dimensional synthesis method of two DoF planar and spherical seven link mechanisms is presented. Interpolation and least square approximations are used to design the mechanism. In the solution of dimensional synthesis problems, nonlinear equations are converted to system of linear equations. The motion generation problem of a 3 DoF platform robot manipulator is solved for three, four and five precision poses. It is shown that the synthesis problem can be solved analytically for three prescribed poses. However, the solution is achieved by using a numerical method for four and five poses. The result, which is obtained from three prescribed poses, is used as an initial guess for four and five poses. Kinematic analysis of the manipulators is investigated. After the derivation of vector-loop equations, inverse and direct position analyses of the manipulators are presented. Constant orientation workspace of a three DoF spatial parallel manipulator is presented. The mechanical elements which are necessary for the construction of manipulators are introduced. The information about the motors which is needed for actuation of manipulators is given. Three DoF parallel manipulator is constructed for a industrial packaging system. Assembly of manufactured parts and mechanical elements are shown.
