Contextualising the Housing Problem of the Roma Community in Relation To Counterurbanisation in Urla, İzmir
(Elsevier, 2024) Arslan Avar, Adile; Doğan, Fehmi; Özcan Cive, Yağmur; Akış, Tonguç
This paper examines how the housing problem of the Roma people, living already under severe socio-spatial circumstances, has been exacerbated by counterurbanisation over recent decades in the resort town of Urla, İzmir. Based on empirical socio-spatial research adopting methodological pluralism integrating qualitative and quantitative research techniques, the study uses in-depth interviews and secondary data (e.g., real-estate web data, official statistics, and local media) as well as spatial analysis of satellite images. We limited our study to the proximity of the town center of Urla, considering the Roma community's ‘right to the city’, ensuring their right not to be exiled to the spaces of discrimination, and not to be exempted from their right to appear and co-exist in the town center. As Urla became a prominent and attractive destination of counterurbanisation in Turkey, its growth was intensified by high-end housing production. Coming to 2000s, its urban-rural texture remained, at least physically, ‘rural’, but it had undergone significant transformation. And while this recent higher-end development accompanied by counterurbanisation is sanctioned by local authorities, the public and property owners, it leaves no room for the Roma people to find decent housing. An inquiry on the housing problem of the Roma people in Urla in relation to counterurbanisation and accompanying housing production contributes to understanding the dialectics between deregulated housing market, commodification and uneven distribution of treasury lands, neoliberal regulations, and fragmented development plans implemented in highly “path-dependent” ways. © 2023 Elsevier Ltd

A Cross-Domain Systematic Review on Guest Speakers in Higher Education: Reconsidering the Role of "outsiders" in Architecture Education
(Yildiz Technical Univ, Fac Architecture, 2024) Kasali, Altug; Akış, Tonguç; Abdel-aziz, Dania
Guest speaker events, as a form of instructional strategy in higher education settings, has long been recognized as a valid pedagogical method, whereas the factors that either promote or hinder the efficacy of this strategy in architecture education has not been extensively investigated. Accordingly, this paper presents a cross-domain literature review on the topic. The findings of the review have led to a discussion on guest speakers in design studios as an effective manifestation of inquiry-based learning (IBL). By searching 8 databases using the PICO framework, a systematic literature review was conducted to an in-depth examination of 35 articles across 25 domains in higher education, followed by a thematic analysis considering Braun and Clarke’s approach. The interpretive analysis yielded six themes: (1) bridging academia and practice, (2) speaker selection, (3) event planning, (4) content and format, (5) interaction mode, and (6) students’ preferences. While incorporating guest speakers can enhance student engagement, critical thinking, and networking, successful implementation hinges on addressing several factors such as the role of instructors’ guidance and tailoring topics and guest speakers’ selection with students' levels. Students' engagement with guest speakers in exploring content, issues, real-world perspectives and questions aligns with experiential learning and IBL principles. The study underscores the need for additional research in architecture education to understand students’ and instructors’ perceptions, concerning the role of guest speakers particularly on issues like contributions to learning, influence on design approaches and the implications for developing collaborative pedagogical practices.

Arkeolojik Miras Olarak Anadolu'da Roma İmparatorluğu'nun Sınırları: Kırsal Peyzajda Mekansal Özellikler ve Koruma
    (01. Izmir Institute of Technology, 2024) Toköz, Özge Deniz; Toköz, Özge Deniz; Akış, Tonguç; Akış, Tonguç

Frontiers as a Rural Landscape: Conserving the Remains of the Roman Empire in Anatolia
(Routledge Journals, Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2025) Tokoz, Ozge Deniz; Akis, Tonguc
Roman frontiers, a part of which passes through Anatolia, are significant heritage remnants of the Roman Empire. Although essential steps have been taken to protect these frontiers and increase their visibility, efforts to protect the Roman frontier in Anatolia are insufficient. The construction of dams and the failure to consider archaeological sites and rural landscapes together create barriers to protection. This study investigates the conservation problems, implementations, and status of the Roman frontier in Anatolia. Common problems, exemplary legal regulations, and conservation practices are discussed by comparing the Anatolian and European frontier sections. Based on this discussion, we advocate for new legal regulations for rural-archaeological sites, increased research on the Roman frontier in Anatolia, greater awareness to strengthen its relationship with the public, and holistic conservation policies that prioritise the relationship of archaeological heritage with the landscape.

Analysis of Walkability Measurement Tools (wmts)
(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2019) Paykoç, Eda; Akış, Tonguç
Walking is the most basic act of human which makes all equal and liberates them in the built environment. For defining how walking friendly the area is, walkability is an issue started to be discussed from its several different aspects. Although walkability is studied from several different disciplines, it has neither accurate definition nor definite criteria.Starting from 1990s, walkability has started to be measured with hard-copy walkability measurement tools (WMTs) and followed by web-based walkability measurement tools. In the literature, WMTs are generally used as a tool to measure the walkability level of the selected case. However, there are few studies which tries to understand and examine the background process of these WMTs.The aim of this thesis is to categorize and define the background idea of walkability measurement tools by criticizing their keystones and their main ideas. The mapping, clustering, tabling and analyzing processes are the main devices to develop critical analysis. In tabulation, two specific charts are composed: Comprehensive Data Chart and Content Analysis Chart. Under Comprehensive Data Chart, properties of WMT are defined and categorized. In Content Analysis Chart, each tool’s content of WMTs are compared and criticized. Finally, the thesis developed a critical analysis for defining, comparing and understanding each and every single WMT.

Spatial dynamics of rural gentrification at İzmir hinterland
    (01. Izmir Institute of Technology, 2024) Buldan, Ece; Akış, Tonguç

Revisiting Modern Campuses Through Spaces for Leisure in Izmir, Turkey
(Routledge Journals, Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2024) Celikbilek, Gokce; Akis, Tonguc
Division of working and leisure spaces as an early product of modern life has still its traces on urban context. Campus spaces, not only universities, reflect such a programmed structure related to modern everyday life. This paper aims to discuss the changing relationship between working and leisure on varying campus spaces, which embrace these two essential components of modern societies. Many campuses in early Turkey follow similar modernist organisational principles in their design and performs an original path in spatial transformation. Industry, education, and public service campuses, which were established in & Idot;zmir during the 1950s, constitute the spatial framework of this paper. The paper aims to trace the leisure areas of three campuses and examine this meticulously programmed life idea under the influence of the changing leisure spatial culture in Turkey from the 1950s to today. These spaces are articulated and examined by their dwellings and social interaction spaces. Besides, the social experience and individual perspectives of campus users are documented and merged with the physical analysis of the working and leisure spaces. Discussing those examples in socio-spatial details underlines the transformation and dissolution of campus idea in urban life and exposes the unique experience of campus spaces of & Idot;zmir.
