Master Thesis Scheduling the Turkish Soccer League Using Mathematical Programming(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2013) Güney, Faruk; Aslan, Burak GalipGenerating a fair and feasible schedule is a difficult challenge for sports league organizers because of having various requirements from various involved parties. Some of these requirements are fairness requirements. Turkish Soccer League should be scheduled by according to these requirements especially because of the reduction of the confidence in Turkish Soccer League organizers and authorities due to the case of match fixing in recent years. As scheduling Turkish Soccer League, the prior requirements in our study are the minimization of the total number of break, carry over effect (COE) value of a schedule in addition to meeting the conflicting venue constraints. We decomposed scheduling process in phases to facilitate our solution. We used a different variation of first-break-then-schedule approach, proposed by Rasmussen and Trick (2008), to meet break conditions initially and solved each phase by applying different mathematical programming techniques including Integer Programming (IP) and Constraint Programming (CP). Our study generates a schedule having carry over effect (COE) value which is one of the lowest ones in European soccer competitions, in addition to minimizing total number of breaks.Article Lise Öğrencilerine Bilgisayar Donanımı Öğretimi: Devremi Kuruyorum(Ege Üniversitesi, 2017) Çiloğlugil, Birol; Aslan, Burak Galip; İnceoğlu, Mustafa MuratBu çalışmada, lise öğrencilerinin bilgisayar donanımının temellerini ve ilişkili olduğu matematiksel altyapıyı kavramalarını hedefleyen bir mühendislik farkındalık projesinin yapısı ve sonuçları ortaya konmaktadır. The complicated nature of the problem is a serious challenge with vast amount of data available about the learners. Machine learning approaches have been used effectively in both user modeling, and learner modeling implementations. Recent studies on the challenges and solutions about learner modeling are explained in this paper with the proposal of a learner modeling framework to be used in a web-based learning system. The proposed system adopts a hybrid approach combining three machine learning techniques in three stages.Conference Object Citation - WoS: 2Citation - Scopus: 12A Review of Cloud Deployment Models for E-Learning Systems(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2013) Leloğlu, Engin; Ayav, Tolga; Aslan, Burak GalipWith the significant growth in the cloud-based systems, many industries give their attention to cloud computing solutions. E-learning is a promising application area since its typical requirements such as dynamically allocation of computation and storage resources, coincide well with cloud characteristics. This paper presents some possible cloud solutions in e-learning environments by emphasizing its pros and cons. It is of paramount importance to choose the most suitable cloud model for an e-learning application or an educational organization in terms of scalability, portability and security. We distinguish various deployment alternatives of cloud computing and discuss their benefits against typical e-learning requirements.Master Thesis Comparison of Document Classification Approaches for Turkish Texts(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2015) Çobanoğlu, Özlem Ece; Aslan, Burak GalipInternet usage is exponentially growing day by day. This rapid growth in Internet usage leads to an explosion in the number of electronic documents being produced daily. The huge bulk of documents make it difficult accessing the necessary and relevant information. Due to lack of logical organization, retrieval and processing of the desired information from huge number of documents becomes a complex and time consuming task with human effort. Therefore, document classification is significant task to manage and process the documents. In this thesis, the performance of different classification approaches produced from several algorithms is thoroughly evaluated. The main goal of the thesis is to determine the best combination of document preprocessing steps and classification algorithms. Different feature weighting, construction and selection methods are experimented on Turkish documents. Stemmed and original words and their bi-gram and tri-gram forms are used to construct the features which represent the documents. The effects of several weighting algorithms and the combination of feature selection and weighting algorithms on 3 different classification approaches are interpreted. The performance of 216 different classification process combinations are analyzed. Experimental results show that C4.5 (C4.5 Decision Tree) classification algorithm has the highest accuracy results in 95% of the results. SVM (Support Vector Machine) algorithm produces the closest results to C4.5 and it provides the highest accuracy in 5% of the experimental results. NB (Naive Bayes) algorithm has always the lowest accuracy rate in these 3 different classification algorithm results.Conference Object Citation - WoS: 11Citation - Scopus: 20Learning Styles Diagnosis Based on Learner Behaviors in Web Based Learning(Springer Verlag, 2009) Atman, Nilüfer; İnceoğlu, Mustafa Murat; Aslan, Burak GalipIndividuals have different backgrounds, motivation and preferences in their own learning processes. Web-based systems that ignore these differences have difficulty in meeting learners' needs effectively. One of these individual differences is the learning style. For providing adaptively incorporated learning styles, firstly learning styles of learners have to be identified. There are many different learning models in literature. This study is based on Felder and Silverman's Learning Styles Model and investigates only active/reflective and visual/verbal dimensions of this model. Instead of filling out a questionnaire, learner behaviors are analyzed with the help of literature-based approaches so that learning styles of learners can be detected.Master Thesis Heuristic Container Placement Algorithms(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2003) Aslan, Burak Galip; Püskülcü, HalisWith the growth of transportation over sea; defining transportation processes in a better way and finding ways to make transportation processes more effective have become one of the most important research areas of today. Especially in the last quartet of the previous decade, the computers had become much powerful tools with their impressive amount of data processing cababilites. It was imminent that computers had begun taking serious roles in the system development studies. As a result; constructing models for the processes in container terminals and processing the data with the computers create opportunities for the automation of various processes in container terminals. The final step of these studies is the full automation of terminal activities with software packages that combine various functions focused on various processes in a single system. This study is about a project that had been made for a container terminal owned by a special company. During this study; there had been discussions with experts about the subject, and container handling processes in the terminal had been analyzed in order to define the main structure of the yard management software to be created. This study focuses on the container handling activities over the yard space so as to create a basis for a computer system that will take part in the decisions during the container operations. Object oriented analysis and design methods are used for the definition of the system that will help the decisions in the yard operations. The optimization methodology that will be the core of the container placement decisions is based on using different placement patterns and placement algorithms for different conditions. These placement patterns and algorithms are constructed due to the container handling machinery that was being used in the terminal that this study has been made for.Conference Object Citation - WoS: 8Citation - Scopus: 15A Comparative Study on Neural Network Based Soccer Result Prediction(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2007) Aslan, Burak Galip; İnceoğlu, Mustafa MuratThis study mainly remarks the efficiency of black-box modeling capacity of neural networks in the case of forecasting soccer match results, and opens up several debates on the nature of prediction and selection of input parameters. The selection of input parameters is a serious problem in soccer match prediction systems based on neural networks or statistical methods. Several input vector suggestions are implemented in literature which is mostly based on direct data from weekly charts. Here in this paper, two different input vector parameters have been tested via learning vector quantization networks in order to emphasize the importance of input parameter selection. The input vector parameters introduced in this study are plain and also meaningful when compared to other studies. The results of different approaches presented in this study are compared to each other, and also compared with the results of other neural network approaches and statistical methods in order to give an idea about the successful prediction performance. The paper is concluded with discussions about the nature of soccer match forecasting concept that may draw the interests of researchers willing to work in this area.Conference Object Computational Sciences Learning Project for Pre-University Students(Springer Verlag, 2007) İnceoğlu, Mustafa Murat; Aslan, Burak GalipIt is quite useful for high school students to study on computational sciences, especially for those who are planning to have a higher education in engineering. The profiling approach of the student modeling system is based on Felder and Silverman's Learning Styles Model and Felder and Soloman's Index of Learning Styles Questionnaire. The questionnaire was adapted to Turkish for this experimental study conducted with respect to the visual/verbal and active/reflective dimensions of the model. A topic in EFL was chosen for the learning content design, which was also carried into the digital domain and remastered as separate learning scenes for different learning styles. Computer software was also implemented to carry out the experimental learning processes. A quasi-experimental pre-test, post-test design was conducted with 46 volunteers, with 23 students assigned each to a control and an experimental group to compare academic achievement between student-based learning and conventional computer-based learning. No significant difference was found in academic achievement between the control and experimental groups after the experimental treatment. The diagnostic performance of the proposed student modeling system was also compared with performances from similar studies. This student modeling system had a successful prediction rate of 41% on the visual/verbal dimension and 54% on the active/reflective dimension, respectively.
