An Evaluation of the Relationship Between Everyday Life Rhythms and Urban Morphology: the Square of Bursa Kent Meydani Shopping Center, Turkey
(SAGE Publications, 2022) Gümüş, İmran; Yılmaz, Ebru
The aim of this study is to search for the relationship between the morphological character of urban space and the rhythms of everyday life. Initially, behavioral maps are created by observing daily life rhythms, video recordings are taken on weekend and weekday, the snapshot technique, video recordings, and the pedestrian count analysis are used. In the second step, morphological analyses of the study area are prepared by using space syntax approach. Connectivity, local, and global integration values are obtained through creating axial map, and, in addition, visibility graph analysis (VGA) is performed. Bursa Kent Meydani Shopping Center (BKMSC) consists of a square and the shopping units surrounding it. This area was the main transportation point as Central Bus Station Complex until 2006. The area was selected within the scope of the study because its changing public use due to the functional transformation of the area plays a significant role in the identity of the Bursa. The behavioral maps obtained from the observational data give information about user mobility, various actions, and the activities' locations on weekends and weekdays. By correlating and comparing behavioral and space syntax maps analyses, the relationship between the rhythmic character and the morphological structure of the urban space is tested. The study presents original data by revealing the effects of the morphological elements of Bursa on the daily rhythms of the square of BKMSC. The case study is limited to the surveys conducted in 2 days and three different times of the day. The relationship between observational data and space syntax data shows that daily life rhythms are not independent of the morphological factors.

Participatory Design Process in Post-Disaster Housing Production: the Case of October 30, 2020 İzmir Earthquake
    (01. Izmir Institute of Technology, 2022) Çelik, Saniye Dilara; Yılmaz, Ebru
A housing problem after a disaster is a problem that can occur suddenly. This thesis will emphasize why participatory design should be preferred, especially post-disaster housing production. Due to the nature of participation, the community can overcome post-disaster traumas in a more comfortable and controlled manner. Society needs to come out of the post-disaster situation with solidarity and unity. Participation can be achieved through solidarity, communication, cooperation, trust, and a sense of belonging. On the other hand, participatory design answers this urgent problem after the disaster. The thesis aims to examine the concept of participatory design around four main components: actor, process, method, and end product. The first part gives the literature’s theoretical explanations and history of participation and participatory design concepts. The second part discussed the post-disaster housing problem, and examples of post-disaster housing projects produced with a participatory design focus were examined. These examples were compared based on the four components of participation. Then, the struggle plan, which was carried out after the devastating October 30 Izmir Earthquake we experienced last year, was examined. For this examination, firstly, information was collected, and then reality measurement was made with survey and interview methods. A study concluded by comparing the statistical data obtained from the questionnaire with the information collected.

Examining the Effect of Learning Environment on Student Behaviour Through Comparison of Face-To and Online Design Studio
    (2023) Doğan, Ceren; Yılmaz, Ebru
Covid-19 pandemic has affected the field of education, and transition to the distance learning has led to changes in the learning environment and pedagogical transformations. In this process, design studios, which are the basis of architectural education, were also maintained on online platforms. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of the rapid learning environment change in the architectural design studio due to the Covid-19 pandemic on student behaviour. Examining students’ holistic perspectives and behaviours based on their experience in face- to-face design studios and online design studios, this research attempts to reveal the potential and challenges of face-to-face and online studios. In this study, students’ behavioural changes regarding face-to-face studio and online studio were measured using the survey method, and these two learning environments were interpreted over six themes (peer learning, socially mediated learning, self-efficacy, self-regulation, motivation, and communication with the instructor) by using the survey results, the course structure and the theoretical framework. The findings reveal that change in the learning environment affects student behaviour and that face-to-face design studios and online design studios have different potentials and limitations. In addition, the course structure of the face-to-face studio and online studio, the tools and methods used in learning, the way of communication and collaboration vary depending on the structure of the learning environment. This study reveals that the face-to-face design studio is a learning environment where the social structure of the studio is developed, peer learning is supported, and methods such as physical model and hand-sketching are used as well as digital tools during communication with the instructor. It shows that the most important potentials of the online studio are that it offers a flexible learning environment, does not have time and place restrictions, allows for cross-cultural and inter-institutional collaboration, and supports self-study. As a result, the research shows that online studio experiences gained during the pandemic period can offer the opportunity to create blended learning environments by adding online features to the traditional face-to-face studio.

A Study on Social Practices and Rhyths: the Analysis of Everyday Life Spaces in Izmir
(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2017) Gümüş, İmran; Yılmaz, Ebru
Lefebvre's book, 'Rhythmanalysis: Space, Time and Everyday Life' (1992/2004) has been a stimulating resource for thinking about everyday life, space and time. Upon reviewing the other theories on daily life, it is considered as an umbrella term embracing all these theories as well as bearing traces of each. The method of Rhythmanalysis, which is the main concept of this study, is not merely restricted to the way that Lefebvre put forward the theory. In this study, how this concept emerged and is handled will be analyzed in detail. Rhythmanalysis is a tool for recognizing and understanding everyday life and space, as well as finding traces that reveal the authenticity of spaces. How do rhythms shape the human experiences of time and space? How do rhythms penetrate everyday life and space? These are the main questions to be answered in the study. This study focuses on the emergence of Lefebvre's method of 'rhythmanalysis' and its use in different disciplines as a means of analyzing urban space. Daily life rhythms contain the most comprehensive data indicating the daily life of the citizens in the urban space. Within the scope of this study, the concept of rhythmanalysis, which Lefebvre defined theoretically, has been practically applied in İzmir Kıbrıs Şehitleri Street. The identity and unique characteristics of this street, its actors and components of everyday life have been defined by considering everyday life theories and applying this method.

Subjectivity in Design Education: the Perception of the City Through Personal Maps
    (Blackwell Publishing, 2016) Yılmaz, Ebru
Our mental maps related to the cities are limited by our personal perception and fragmented in the process. There are many inner and outer effects that shape our mental maps, and as a result the fragmented whole refers to the total city image in our minds. To represent this image, an experimental study has been conducted with a group of students. They used mapping techniques to design subjective maps. Maps, in general, are objective, and produced by standardised techniques which connote similar meanings for everyone. In contrast, artists and designers use maps as liberating objects of representations. Thus, using mapping techniques, inventing new ways of narration and gaining new understandings towards the city we dwell in are the basic aims of this study. Final designs can be evaluated as tools to question subjectivity in both design and architectural education.

An Inquiry Into the Construction of National Memory in the Republican Period: Assembly Buildings of Turkey
(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2021) Taraz, Nazlı; Yılmaz, Ebru
At the turn of the 19th century, Anatolian lands witnessed a grandiose change in policy by questioning longstanding Ottoman monarchy. Amongst several steps paced towards a new regime, a series of reforms initiated a comprehensive transformation in political and socio-cultural contexts of the Empire towards a Republic. In pursuit of succeeding regulations, the lands of the Ottoman Empire transformed into the homeland of the Turkish Republic after a long and challenging period. Inherently, such an extensive conversion did not occur all at once but materialized in a completely new manner of mentality actualized in architectural spaces, collective events and mass media of the state. Amongst these operational tools, the assembly buildings of Turkey take a critical position by iconically and officially representing the new Turkish national identity in the urban context from 1920. Grounding on archival evidence and discourse analysis, this study inquires the crucial position of the assembly buildings as memory spaces while actively participating to the construction of Republican identities. In order to understand how the assembly buildings of Turkey carve a special niche for themselves while keeping and representing the collective memory of the state, a thematic approach is proposed upon their concretizations, commemorations and imagery constructions in time. Thus, the inquiry on the physical existences, collective uses and printed representations of the assembly buildings constitute the backbone of this study to understand active role of these three building as memory spaces and meaning storages of the Turkish Republic.

A Study on Technological Expression in Architecture
(Izmir Institute of Technology, 1998) Yılmaz, Ebru; Eyüce, Ahmet
Within the scope of this study, while questioning the relations between technology and architecture, their effects on human life has also been analyzed with all due aspects pertaining to the formation of the architectural end-product. Its role in the process of architectural design is parallel to this relationship. In this study, the idea which is aimed to achieve is that technology which was once a part of an artisanal production, has been taken up as a problem of modernization in the development of industrialization. The study which aims at demonstrating this alterations, tries to question the ways of seeking a tectonically sensitive dimension in architecture in the age of information including a series of comparative analysis.Within the scope of this study, while putting forward the spatial characteristics of high-tech architecture as a follower of a constructive tradition, building technology of the last decade in Turkey has been included in the discussion. The discussion has been enriched by conceptual definitions in order to determine the terminology of the subject. In addition to the retrospective overviews, architectural concepts of the eras have been presented. The findings of the study has been approved that the technical knowledge today is not limited as the knowledge of classical crafts technique, but it should be the rationalization of both the technical and the traditional. Most of the high-tech designs today use a kind of craft technique based on the machine production. In addition, the structural elements accomplished for the sake of visual impact ate not "technological", but "scenographic" and "representational" as a matter of tectonic expression. Keywords: philosophy of technology, modern age, tectonics, information age, hightech, architectural design approaches.

Analysing Pakistani Architecture in the Context of Critical Regionalism
    (01. Izmir Institute of Technology, 2022) Bahadur, Aujala Naveed; Yılmaz, Ebru
Pakistani architectural practise is adopting global trends and universal ideals without regard to its traditional roots, meanwhile critical regionalism has emerged as a significant global strategy for delivering a blend of legitimacy and contemporary architecture, particularly in developing nations. In addition, it promotes the production of architecture directly related to their surroundings and communities while being a component of the contemporary world. Therefore, using critical regionalism as a tool, this study will examine Pakistani architecture to understand the linkage between its tradition and modern technology. Within the scope of this thesis, theoretical studies on Critical Regionalism are first explored, concluded by eight aspects that, according to this research, go beyond what Kenneth Frampton and others had established. Then, an examination of the persisting problems in Pakistani architectural practises is performed. The following chapter examines critical regionalism in Pakistani architecture using the same eight factors. The examination includes the ideologies, works, and interviews with Pakistan's three most prominent architects: Nayyar Ali Dada, Kamil Khan Mumtaz, and Naeem Pasha. The research concludes by determining, via observations and deductions, the viability of critical regionalism as a tool. Due to a lack of publications on Pakistani architects and architecture, this study attempts to develop a framework for future studies on awareness and inspiration from selected architects' work.
