We observed that sustainability is on the agenda of universities and local governments in Turkey, and frequently included in scientic projects as a keyword. Despite the growing popularity of the concept of sustainability in Turkish academia, there is no detailed examination on how it is understood by academics and how this reects on their scientic outputs. Since the notion of sustainability is instrumentalised by discourses such as development, progress and modernism, on which capitalism nourishes, it also requires thinking about how closely it intertwined with capitalism. The reection of the positivist paradigm on the academic discourses, which is the basis of contemporary techno-scientic-economic discourse, requires critical scrutiny on sustainability as a concept and a practice. For Turkey, this kind of critical inquiry is lacking in the literature. Therefore, we examined the perceptions of the academicians towards the concept of sustainability and how they relate to the practical and theoretical contradictions that this concept has through critical discourse analysis. Thus, we focused on how the sustainable development discourse circulates in academia and reconstructed in local circles. We believe that academics who claim to work on 'sustainability' need to critically engage the questions of what we produce, what we empower, and in what direction we are moving in a critical manner. Bir kentte kullanılan sözcüklerin gelecek nesillere aktarılmadan kaybolması ise kültürel mirasın kaybı anlamına gelir. Bu durum kent tarihi, kültürü, sosyolojisi ve diyalektolojisi açısından bir yoksullaşma olarak yorumlanabilir. Türkiye ve çalışmaya örneklem olan İzmir’de Rom, Dom ve Lom gruplarının konuştuğu Roman dili (Romani, Romanes) tehlike altındaki diller arasında gösterilmektedir. Romanların Anadolu’ya ne zaman ve hangi tarihte geldiğine dair elimizde kesin bilgiler bulunmamakla birlikte takip edebildiğimiz kadarıyla 16. yüzyıldan beri İzmir’de Türklerle birlikte yaşamaktadırlar. Bu çalışmada, İzmir Romanlarının İzmir ağzına katkılarından bazıları ortaya konmuş, bu alıntılar arasından Türkçe sözlüklerde eksik kalan kayıtlar tespit edilerek bu kayıtların sözlüklere dâhil edilmesi önerilmiştir. Çalışmada ayrıca İzmir ağzında yaşamaya devam eden bu sözcükler üzerinden “tehlikedeki diller” statüsünde olan Roman diline dikkat çekilmek istenmiş ve Roman dilinden başka dillere geçen sözcüklerin de araştırılması gerektiği konusunda literatürdeki eksiğe katkı sağlanmaya çalışılmıştır. This alignment, along with internal developments, prompted governments to prioritize Roma issues, implement projects, and issue action plans. The Roma Civil Society Movement in the 1990s further highlighted Roma challenges, resulting in a diverse body of literature. This study critically examines academic literature to map prevailing trends and thematic foci. Key areas of scholarly engagement include the various dimensions of socio-economic exclusion faced by Roma in education, employment, housing, and health. Additionally, scholars analyze how Roma negotiate and resist pejorative representations, construct their identities, and organize to address contemporary challenges. State policies affecting Roma, from past to present, also receive considerable attention. Although these systems have been largely neglected with the expansion of modern water infrastructure, they remain a valuable heritage containing significant knowledge and practices that are still relevant today, particularly in overcoming water management challenges in the face of climate change. Although traditional WHSs have been studied across various regions, their forms and functions vary significantly due to unique climatic, geological, and cultural conditions. In the Mediterranean context, small-scale WHSs have received comparatively limited attention-particularly studies that integrate both their revitalization for contemporary use and their historical and cultural significance. This study aims to help bridge that gap and contribute the existing literature by focusing on the WHSs in Barbaros, a semi-arid village on the Aegean coast of Turkey. Barbaros is particularly unique due to its special geological conditions, as the porous soil makes water retention difficult, which adds to the importance of traditional WHSs. In this context, the main objective of this research is to comprehensively assess these systems, by considering the area's topography, geological features, WHS construction techniques, and local knowledge transmitted across generations. This multidisciplinary approach, combining a literature review, field observations, expert surveys and interviews with long-time residents, enables a comprehensive analysis of the typologies, current state and socio-cultural evolution of these systems. A thorough understanding of these systems is essential to assess their resilience and relevance for climate change adaptation, especially with regard to drought management. The study concludes that, despite their partial abandonment, the traditional WHSs in Barbaros offer valuable insights into sustainable water management and demonstrate their potential as practical models for addressing today's water challenges.Article Citation - WoS: 4Citation - Scopus: 2Unwanted Others of the City: Counter-Cultural Production of the Roma People of Urla-Turkey(Taylor & Francis, 2024) Uştuk, OzanThis article examines a case of urban displacement and its impact on the local Roma community by uncovering the discursive strategies of the local governments and the tactical responses of the local people. Based on two-year-long ethnographic research, this study aims to understand the intricate dynamics of the counter-cultural production of the Roma people as a response to gentrification policies of local governments. The rapid rise of the rent value of land has motivated the capital class to force an exile strategy on Roma and accelerated existing segregation policies. During this time, some discursive strategies to manufacture public consent about the gentrification have circulated to change the representation of the Roma identity, replacing their imagery in mainstream society by mainly signifying them as the undeserving poor. Etnik bağlamı öne çıkan Roman kültürel kimliği, Romanlar ile Öteki (Gaco, Roman olmayanlar) arasında meydana gelen sınır ilişkileri aracılığıyla tesis edilmektedir. Roman kimliğinin heterojen yapısı oldukça çatışmalı bir kimlik inşası sürecine işaret etmektedir. Kültürel kimliğin kuruluşunda önemli bir etkisi olan grup içi çatışmaların etkilerini irdelemek, yekpare kültürel söylem repertuvarlarını kaydetmenin ötesine geçen, derinlemesine ve uzun soluklu etnografik araştırmalar sayesinde mümkündür. Eleştirel etnografya yaklaşımı benimsenen bu çalışmada, Roman-Gaco kültürlerarası iletişiminde üretmiş temsili çeşitlilik bir yana, bu iletişimsel süreçler ile farklı biçimlerde ilişkilenen Romanların kendi mahalleleri içinde meydana getirdikleri grup içi çatışmalara odaklanılmıştır. Their portrayal in the mainstream Turkish cinema and TV in particular has contributed to the predominant imaginary in circulation which essentially is based on common binaries and stereotypes. In order to challenge prevailing stereotypes about the Roma, we have conducted a transformative action research project with the Roma people of the Sira district in Izmir, Turkey, who volunteered to make their own films. This article provides an account of this community filmmaking project. This long-neglected sub-cultural group in the Turkish context is mostly regarded as the “others” of society, who cannot speak for themselves. Their public imagination is, therefore, based heavily on narratives that are exclusively produced by non-Roma people. In order to reveal the historical construction of the popular Roma image in Turkey, we cover audiovisual material from the 1960s onward. Through a descriptive-interpretive analysis, we seek to explore how cultural and artistic narratives have contributed to and/or mirrored, and thus reproduced, the prevailing knowledge and imagination about the Roma people in Turkish society. © 2019 Liverpool University Press. All rights reserved.Article Citation - Scopus: 1İzmir'in bir dağ köyü: Yamanlar ve Yamanlar Yörükleri üzerine etnotarihsel bir inceleme(Rector CIU Cyprus int Univ, 2023) Ustuk, OzanThis study examines the history, language, social, and economic transformation of the Yuruks living in the Yamanlar Village located in the Karsiyaka district, where there is relatively little information in the literature despite its proximity to the Izmir city center. Information collected from the Ottoman Era cemetery adjoining the village reveals that the Yamanlar Yuruks have lived here for at least 400 years. Mount Yamanlar, where the village is located, is of great importance because of its ancient history, as it witnessed the founding of Izmir (Smyrna). The social and economic lifestyle in the village has transformed as the city expanded toward residential areas atop Mount Yamanlar. The loss of traditional livelihood practices challenged the villagers and severely influenced their customs, which might be considered valuable pieces of cultural heritage. In this study, we conducted fieldwork, during which various data collection methods and techniques were employed to describe daily life in the village. Within the scope of this study, semi-structured and unstructured interviews were conducted with the local people, and an oral historical study was carried out. With this method, we aimed to present an ethnohistorical description of the Yamanlar Village by trying to establish a balance between the analysis of both written documents and oral data to make sense of the social and economic change it has undergone and to contribute to the literature on Izmir Yuruks.Article Citation - WoS: 1Tacit Racism Toward Roma Students: the Case of a Turkish Public School(Istanbul Univ, Methodology & Sociology Research Center, 2024) Ustuk, OzanThis study aims to reveal hidden racist practices within a Turkish public school and explores their perpetuation through daily interactions between teachers and Roma students. As part of an applied research project dedicated to empowering Roma children in the educational setting, the study employs discourse analysis to expose tacit racist discourses circulating within the school. Using participant observation, casual conversations, in-depth interviews, and focus group discussions, the research reveals implicit discriminatory practices in classrooms. Teacher interviews expose a prevalent coping mechanism, i.e., denial, which reflects reluctance to acknowledge their role in perpetuating discrimination despite awareness of the structural inequalities faced by Roma students. While comprehending systemic challenges, the adherence of the teachers to the myth of meritocracy fosters cognitive dissonance, which results in a dismissive incomprehension of the realities of and occasional assignment of blame to Roma students. Cultural stereotypes and pseudogenetic explanations function as convenient means of rationalizing existing biases. Navigating cognitive dissonance, teachers frequently redirect their focus toward the behaviors of Roma people due to a sense of helplessness and the influence of the pervasive meritocratic narrative. This dynamic contributes to the perpetuation of institutional racism through the daily discourse of teachers, which inadvertently exacerbates this systemic issue.
