Master Thesis Design Criteria of High Capacity Bus Transportation Systems(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2005) Caner, Cansu; Gür, Nazim Güneş; Gür, GüneşThis thesis proposes to figure out a new model of public bus transportation mode in Turkey which is more competitive and effective among the conventional public transportation modes. In theoretical framework, the focus is on the new concepts and implementations developed in the urban transportation sector. The effective transportation systems regarding lower expenditures were handled according to the travel demands they serve. However, in general, the effectiveness of the modes is determined according to the economic parameters; mainly the conventional modes are discussed and the effectiveness of BRT systems and LRT systems are compared.A brief survey of the BRT (Bus Rapid Transportation) systems is handled to some extent. The design considerations and the results of the implemented examples are handled to constitute a guideline. The major public transportation modes of Izmir are handled to constitute a guideline. The major public transportation modes of Izmir are discussed. A reserved bus-transportation system is designed in the case study stage.Meanwhile the reserved bus concept along the Inönü Street is not designed according to the existing proposals. A distinctive model is concluded regarding the local conditions of Izmir. At final stage, the energy consumption rates of the systems are calculated and the economic comparison of the systems is based on this parameter.Conference Object Citation - WoS: 1Citation - Scopus: 1The Method of Policy Capturing for the Transportation Disadvantaged: Simulation Results(WITPress, 2003) Duvarcı, Yavuz; Gür, GüneşIn the previous study called "A Modelling Approach for the Transportation Disadvantaged", which was an experimental one calibrated in a small town in Turkey, it was observed that an integrated TPM for the disadvantaged category was probable, and the findings were observable at all stages of the sequential modelling, however, with slight differences compared to the Normal model's results. Following the previous one, this study shows the method of how "policy capturing" could be possible on the basis of these differences, which aims to help improve the adverse conditions of the disadvantaged. The method is sort of category analysis based on the cluster analysis results, since it is clearly verified that the "disadvantage indices" identified as the single-disadvantage groups match with the values of cluster centres. Using TRANUS software, three simulations are run for three dimensions of disadvantage: socio-economic (categorical), spatial and the positional. The simulation results, evaluated from different criteria, showed that socio-economic dimension was the most fruitful area for policy capturing. Article Citation - Scopus: 2Impacts of Transportation Projects on Urban Trends in Izmir(Turkish Chamber of Civil Engineers, 2008) Duvarcı, Yavuz; Selvi, Ömer; Günaydın, Hüsnü Murat; Gür, GüneşThe effects of major transportation projects on urban trends in Izmir were analyzed using the Delphi method. Once convergence was maintained in expert opinions, the Delphi results were re-evaluated according to the suggested method of total evaluation for obtaining much concise and general results. Accordingly, Absolute Total Impacts (ATI), Net Total Impacts (NTI) and the impact levels in broader terms were defined. The most effective projects were found to be: Integrated Rail Transportation System, Enhancement of Existing İzmir Port. The most impacted trends were: Development in Tourism Sector, Economic Development, Air Pollution and the Ratio of Private Car Ownership.Master Thesis Efficiency Analysis of Izmir Metro in Its Current State(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2002) Selvi, Ömer; Gür, GüneşThis thesis analyzes the efficiency of the current state of İzmir Metro System by using the Method of Comparative Benchmarking. In the theoretical framework, the need and emerge of each transit mode is discussed, and the importance of mass transit concept is pointed out. The development of urban transit and the need for metro systems are examined. The characteristics of the prevailing mass transit systems modes are described and compared. Efficiency concept, as the quality of well and effective service, without wasting time, money, or energy, is analyzed. Different approaches to efficiency are described. In the view of efficiency; right mode choice, right travel demand estimation, right choice of routes and stations are discussed and efficiency criteria for public transport are determined. The Method of Comparative Benchmarking Analysis is examined for the measurement of efficiency. Applications and the uses of this method in public transportation and in metro systems are evaluated. Specifically, performance measurement stages of that performance increaser method are employed to measure the performance of İzmir Metro. İzmir Metro is analyzed and then compared with similar systems worldwide. Key Words: İzmir Metro, Efficiency, Urban Mass Transit, Comparative Benchmarking Analysis
