Conference Object Ephesos in a Capitalist World(Green Lines Institute for Sustainable Development, 2010) Aktüre, Zeynep; Aktüre, Zeynep; 02.02. Department of Architecture; 02. Faculty of Architecture; 01. Izmir Institute of TechnologyIn this paper, the use of the registered site of Ephesos for archaeological excavations and restorations that enliven tourism activities is analyzed as a response to mechanisms of the competitive market in our capitalist world, by putting the site to its socially most valued use and harvesting its productive capacity. The question remains whether the transformation of Ephesos into Turkey's most important tourism capital as such legitimizes its preservation as archaeological heritage, in the sense of public approval at large. The discussion is carried along the axis of property rights to decide whether or not a legitimacy crisis is being experienced in the Ephesos case. This is done by adopting Habermas' definition of crisis in accord with the idea of sustainability, as 'the phase of an illness in which it is decided whether or not the organism's self-healing powers are sufficient for recovery', to scrutinize the sustainability of preserving our archaeological heritage through tourism activities.Article Institutional Reasons Behind the Persistence of the Canon Structure and Organization of Architectural Education in Turkey(Invisu-Cnrs-Inha, Inst Nat Histoire Art, 2012) Akture, Zeynep; Aktüre, Zeynep; 02.02. Department of Architecture; 02. Faculty of Architecture; 01. Izmir Institute of TechnologyWorld Heritage Programme was launched under the auspices of UNESCO by adopting the Convention concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage in 1972. 1223 cultural, natural, and mixed properties have been inscribed on the World Heritage List (WHL) from 1978 to 2024 to ensure international consideration and assistance in their preservation as patrimony of humanity. This paper offers an insight into the visibility of mosaic heritage in this corpus through a survey of references to mosaics in the Statements of Outstanding Universal Value (OUV) on the homepages of World Heritage properties at UNESCO’s website. After an introduction on the requirements for inscription on WHL, distribution of mosaics in World Heritage properties is surveyed in reference to their category, location on the globe, and setting within the property to highlight over- and under-representations, with inspiration from the current strategy of achieving a balanced representation of heritage types, chronologies-regions, and themes on WHL. Then selected “exceptions” in terms of mosaic types, locations, and periods are presented to contribute in increasing their visibility, followed by “highlights” in whose Statements of OUV the word “mosaic” is most repeated. Adopting the wholistic approach recommended in the World Heritage Programme, both sections aim to contextualise the selected examples in the overall corpus and mosaic heritage as an element forming and representing their attributes of OUV. After observing the thus exemplified variety in the mosaic heritage so far inscribed on WHL, concluding remarks highlight areas of further research to deepen the presented visibility analysis. © (2024), (). Faculty of ArchitectureOn 18 September 1956, Franz Miltner, head of the Austrian team of archaeologists working at the ancient site of Ephesos, near modern Selçuk in the Izmir province of Turkey, was informed by an enthusiastic Turkish excavation worker about the unearthing of a golden statue in the Prytaneion (see triptych1).2 On closer examination, the statue turned out to be not gold but, most probably, coated in gold on the upper half. The perfectly worked marble statue was named ‘Artemis the Beautiful’ by Miltner on the basis of its high-quality workmanship, distinguishing it from the later-discovered ‘Artemis the Colossal’, again from the Prytaneion, thus named because of its size. A third, smaller-than-life-size statue again from the Prytaneion would soon join the two.3 © 2009 Selection and editorial matter, Sarah Chaplin and Alexandra Stara; individual chapters, the contributors. Izmir Institute of Technology; 02.02. Department of Architecture; 02. Faculty of ArchitectureIn this thesis, Hagia Sophia in Istanbul is handled as a living monument in its physical and cultural context in the Historic Peninsula to question the existence of a correlation between the changes in the building scale and transformations in a larger physical and cultural context. In order to do this, urban and architectural scale studies on the Historic Peninsula and Hagia Sophia are cross-read to highlight Hagia Sophia as the center of a continuously changing physical and cultural context which is changing with its transforming environment and, at the same time, changes its context through conversions that occur in the building scale up to the Ottoman conquest in the fifteenth century. This survey reveals Hagia Sophia as one of the most important architectural monuments in the world that has been a continually transforming edifice to remain in use for different civilizations in a synchronously changing urban context. The importance of the urban context of Hagia Sophia has had a major share in the maintenance of the building’s importance. Changes and continuities in Hagia Sophia, in their turn, had their share in the maintenance of the importance of the building’s urban context in a larger scale in a palimpsestic process.Article Ancient Places of Performance as “Realms of Memory”.
