Master Thesis The Effect of Engineering Criteria in the Application of Cooling System and Air-Condition System Used in Trade Vehicles on Industrial Design Criteria(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2006) Keshavarzi, Ferhan; Seçkin, Yavuz; Seçkin, YavuzIn this thesis the designing criteria of the cooling system and air conditioners, which are used in trade vehicles, are analyzed in terms of industrial designing. The study describes the stage of the process through which the air conditioner is created and designed in accordance both with the criteria of engineering and industrial design. The thesis also dwells on the functioning principles of the air conditioner and the impacts of its use on the human life and working conditions. The other issues dealt with are the reasons why the industrial designer should use the engineering criteria to complete the design of the air conditioner and why he should use the industrial design criteria to make the design preferable. In order to show the effects of the engineering and designing criteria on the design of the air conditioner, all the phases are shown in this thesis.Master Thesis Industrial Product Design by Using Two-Dimensional Material in the Context of Origamic Structure and Integrity(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2004) Yiğit, Nergiz; Seçkin, YavuzThroughout the history of industrial product design, there have always been attempts to shape everyday objects from a single piece of semi-finished industrial materials such as plywood, sheet metal, plastic sheet and paper-based sheet. One of the ways to form these two-dimensional materials into three-dimensional products is bending following cutting. Similar concepts of this spatial transformation are encountered in the origami form, which has a planar surface in unfolded state, then transforms to a three-dimensional state by folding or by folding following cutting. If so, conceptually it may be useful to think of one-axis bending, which is a manufacturing technique, is somewhat similar to folding paper. In this regard, the studies in the scope of computational origami, which light the way for real-world problems such as how sheets of material will behave under stress, have applications especially in .manufacturing phase. of industrial product design.Besides manufacturing phase, origami design is also used as a product design tool either in .concept creating phase. (in the context of its concepts) or in 'form creating phase' (in the context of its design principles). In this thesis, the designing of industrial products, which are made from sheet material, is presented in a framework that considers the origami design. In the theoretical framework, evolutionary progression of origami design is discussed briefly in order to comprehend the situation of origami design in distinct application fields. Moreover, the elements, principles, basics of origami design and origamic structures are generally introduced. The theoretical framework is completed with the descriptions of the concepts on origami design and origamic structures. In the practical framework, typical applications that have origamic structures in distinct industrial product fields are exemplified. Furthermore, sheet materials and their bending process are taken up separately. By means of its excessive advantages, sheet metal bending is particularly emphasized. The practical framework is completed with several case studies base on sheet metal bending. Finally, the study is concluded with the evaluation of the origamic-structured product in respect of good design principles. Furthermore, designing by considering origami design is recommended to designer to design a good industrial product.Master Thesis Evaluation of Product Sound Design Within the Context of Emotion Design and Emotional Branding(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2005) Piker, Gürer; Seçkin, YavuzThe main purpose of this thesis is to set out the relationships between the work of product designers and the perceptions of costumers regarding the acceptability of product sounds. Product design that provides aesthetic appeal, pleasure and satisfaction can greatly influence success of a product. Sound as a cognitive artifact, plays a significant role in the cognition of product interaction and in shaping its identity. This thesis will review emotion theories end their application to sound design and sound quality modeling, the measurement of emotional responses to sound, and the relationship between psycho-acoustical sound descriptions and emotions. In addition to that, affects of sounds to emotionally significant brands will be evaluated so as to examine marketing values. One of the main purposes of chapter 2 is to prove knowledge about psychoacoustics; as product sound quality is a basic understanding of the underlying psychoacoustics phenomena. Perception; particularly sound perception and its elements are described during chapter 2. Starting with the description of sound wave and how our hear works, sound perception and auditory sensation is reviewed in continuation. In chapter 3, product sound quality concept and its evaluation principles are reviewed. Thus, in order to understand the coupling between the acoustic perception and the product design; knowledge of general principles for product sound quality are required. Chapter 4 can be considered as two main sections. .How does emotion act as a delighter in product design?. is examined to better understand customer and user experiences impacting pleasure-ability in first section. In the second section, emotion is evaluated through sound design. A qualitative evaluation is done so as to examine cognition and emotion in sound perception. Chapter 5 leads subject through emotional branding. Sounds that carry the brand.s identity are evaluated within. Sound design is re-evaluated as marketing strategy and examined with several instances. Keywords: Product sound design, psychoacoustics, product sound quality, emotion design, emotional branding.Master Thesis The Role of Industrial Design in Passenger Boat Building: Concept Design of a Ferry for Marine Urban Transportation in Izmir Bay as a Case(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2006) Baykal, Halis Haluk; Seçkin, YavuzThe city of İzmir is in a process of rapid growth and there is a great pressure of demand on the urban transportation. The shortage of mass transportation availabilities, together with the recent increases in the economic power of an average customer, has promoted private car ownership and this has resulted in the congestion of intercity traffic; increasing the burden on the existing road system. Since 1980.s, efforts to develop of sea urban transportation have been in the agenda of the city. Privatization of public sea transport network in the Bay, management of this network by the Municipality, hiring a private fleet for transportation by the municipality are some examples of the efforts mentioned. The main problem which the transportation managers meet is old and costly managing sea transportation fleet. To overcome of this problem, there is an intention for renewing the fleet by designing a ferry boat that meets the needs of zmir.s sea transportation system. In this study, a ferry which can navigate in zmir Bay environmental conditions and carry enough passengers has been designed by using industrial design criteria. The main steps of the concept design of the ferry have been listed below: (1) Examples from all over the World have been investigated. (2) Inquires carried on in 1996 and 2004 periods on the passengers demands have been considered to form design criteria. (3) Observations during the trips of current transportation system have been done. (4) Interviews with some experts from the transportation sector have been had. At the last section of the study, concept design of the ferry has been detailed. Main advantages of this design have been concluded as: (1) Safe (2) Cost effective (in building and in managing) (3) Comfortable (4) Light and green (less fuel consuming) (5) Fast (during embarkation and debarkation, during the trip) (6) Designed for disabled passenger.Master Thesis User-Centered Design Criteria in Automobile Design With a Case Study of Automobile Dashboard Design(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2006) Arslan, Fatih; Seçkin, YavuzOur era provides us enormous changes and unforeseen advancements in technology, which lead to specific changes in economic and socio-cultural values. Under the impact of mechanistic look, conceptions of mobility and modularity emerge as affixed part of this paradoxical cycle. In the context of standardization and individualism, this study focuses on the birth of modern kitchen conceptions relating to the standardization of modern housing and the work process. Then the study addresses the transformation process of modern kitchen from stable architectural space into independent standardized mobile furniture. Thus, it gains great capacity by being in motion and possibility to separate itself from home and its context in order to encounter the sense of freedom, changeability and individuality. This study also focuses on modularized kitchen, which is standardized as much as it is divided into parts enriched by various sliding, rotating, folding and joining elements. So, the mobility has emerged as a conception that increased the possibilities of variations and changeability of modularized kitchen. Consequently, each moveable component has prepared the conditions of kitchen-in-motion that look for new directions towards transformable kitchen design.Master Thesis Applying Product Design Methods To Medical Device Design With a Case Study on Home Care Devices(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2004) Çetin, Aslı; Seçkin, YavuzMedical device design is one of the most important and most promising fields of industrial design.
