Article Citation - WoS: 10Citation - Scopus: 11Separate Einstein-Eddington Spaces and the Cosmological Constant(John Wiley and Sons Inc., 2016) Azri, HemzaBased on Eddington affine variational principle on a locally product manifold, we derive the separate Einstein space described by its Ricci tensor. The derived field equations split into two field equations of motion that describe two maximally symmetric spaces with two cosmological constants. We argue that the invariance of the bi-field equations under projections on the separate spaces, may render one of the cosmological constants to zero. We also formulate the model in the presence of a scalar field. The resulted separate Einstein-Eddington spaces maybe considered as two states that describe the universe before and after inflation. A possibly interesting affine action for a general perfect fluid is also proposed. It turns out that the condition which leads to zero cosmological constant in the vacuum case, eliminates here the effects of the gravitational mass density of the perfect fluid, and the dynamic of the universe in its final state is governed by only the inertial mass density of the fluid.Article Citation - WoS: 26Citation - Scopus: 26Induced Affine Inflation(American Physical Society, 2018) Azri, Hemza; Demir, Durmuş AliInduced gravity, metrical gravity in which gravitational constant arises from vacuum expectation value of a heavy scalar, is known to suffer from Jordan frame vs Einstein frame ambiguity, especially in inflationary dynamics. Induced gravity in affine geometry, as we show here, leads to an emergent metric and gravity scale, with no Einstein-Jordan ambiguity. While gravity is induced by the vacuum expectation value of the scalar field, nonzero vacuum energy facilitates generation of the metric. Our analysis shows that induced gravity results in a relatively large tensor-to-scalar ratio in both metrical and affine gravity setups. However, the fact remains that the induced affine gravity provides an ambiguity-free framework.Article Citation - WoS: 47Citation - Scopus: 42Affine Inflation(American Physical Society, 2017) Azri, Hemza; Demir, Durmuş AliAffine gravity, a gravity theory based on affine connection with no notion of metric, supports scalar field dynamics only if scalar fields have nonvanishing potential. The nonvanishing vacuum energy ensures that the cosmological constant is nonvanishing. It also ensures that the energy-momentum tensor of vacuum gives the dynamically generated metric tensor. We construct this affine setup and study primordial inflation in it. We study inflationary dynamics in affine gravity and general relativity, comparatively. We show that nonminimally coupled inflaton dynamics can be transformed into minimally coupled ones with a modified potential. We also show that there is one unique frame in affine gravity, as opposed to the Einstein and Jordan frames in general relativity. Future observations with higher accuracy may be able to test affine gravity.Article Citation - WoS: 17Citation - Scopus: 19Cosmological Consequences of a Variable Cosmological Constant Model(World Scientific Publishing Co. Pte Ltd, 2017) Azri, Hemza; Bounames, A.We derive a model of dark energy which evolves with time via the scale factor. The equation-of-state is studied as a function of a parameter α introduced in this model as = (1 - 2α)/(1 + 2α). In addition to the recent accelerated expansion, the model predicts another decelerated phase. These two phases are studied via the parameter α. The age of the universe is found to be almost consistent with the observation. In the limiting case, the cosmological constant model, we find that vacuum energy gravitates with a tiny gravitational constant which evolves with the scale factor, rather than with Newton's constant. This enables degravitation of the vacuum energy which in turn produces the tiny observed curvature, rather than a 120 orders of magnitude larger value.Doctoral Thesis Cosmological Implications of Affine Gravity(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2018) Azrı, Hemza; Demir, Durmuş AliThe main aim of this thesis is to reveal some interesting aspects of the purely affine theory of gravity and its cosmological implication. A particular attention will be devoted to its consequences when applied to cosmological inflation. Primarily, affine spacetime, composed of geodesics with no notion of length and angle, accommodates gravity but not matter. The thesis study is expected to reveal salient properties of matter dynamics in affine spacetime and may reveal an intimate connection between vacuum state and metrical gravity. An interesting application of the framework is the inflationary regime, where it is shown that affine gravity prefers only a unique metric tensor such that the transition from nonminimal to minimal coupling of the inflaton is performed only via redefinition of latter. This allows us to avoid the use of the so called conformal frames. In fact, unlike metric gravity, the metric tensor in affine gravity is generated and not postulated a priori, thus this tensor is absent in the actions and conformal transformation does not make sense. Last but not least, we try to show how metric gravity can be induced through a simple structure that contains only affine connection and scalar fields. General relativity arises classically only at the vacuum, and this view of gravity may be considered as a new way to inducing metric elasticity of space, not through quantum corrections as in standard induced gravity, but only classically. The thesis is concluded by analyzing affine gravity in a particular higher-dimensional manifold (product of two spaces) in an attempt to understand both, the cosmological constant and matter dynamically.Article Citation - WoS: 12Citation - Scopus: 12Eddington's Gravity in Immersed Spacetime(IOP Publishing Ltd., 2015) Azri, HemzaWe formulate Eddington's affine gravity in a spacetime that is immersed in a larger eight-dimensional space endowed with a hypercomplex structure. The dynamical equation of the first immersed Ricci-type tensor leads to gravitational field equations which include matter. We also study the dynamical effects of the second Ricci-type tensor when added to the Lagrangian density. A simple Lagrangian density constructed from a combination of the standard Ricci tensor and a new tensor field that appears due to the immersion, leads to gravitational equations in which the vacuum energy gravitates with a different cosmological strength as in Demir (2014 Phys. Rev. D 90 064017), rather than with Newton's constant. As a result, the tiny observed curvature is reproduced due to large hierarchies rather than fine tuning.Article Citation - WoS: 22Citation - Scopus: 24Are There Really Conformal Frames? Uniqueness of Affine Inflation(World Scientific Publishing Co. Pte Ltd, 2018) Azri, HemzaHere, we concisely review the nonminimal coupling dynamics of a single scalar field in the context of purely affine gravity and extend the study to multifield dynamics. The coupling is performed via an affine connection and its associated curvature without referring to any metric tensor. The latter arises a posteriori and it may gain an emergent character like the scale of gravity. What is remarkable in affine gravity is the transition from nonminimal to minimal couplings which is realized by only field redefinition of the scalar fields. Consequently, the inflationary models gain a unique description in this context where the observed parameters, like the scalar tilt and the tensor-to-scalar ratio, are invariant under field reparametrization. Overall, gravity in its affine approach is expected to reveal interesting and rich phenomenology in cosmology and astroparticle physics.
