Spatial dynamics of rural gentrification at İzmir hinterland

Abstract

1980'ler ve 1990'larda ise kırsal mekan, yalnızca tarım ile ilişkilendirilmekten çıkmış ve ekonomik, toplumsal ve mekansal üretimin birleştiği bir alan olarak şekillenmiştir. Kırsal soylulaştırma kavramı 1965'te literatüre girmesine rağmen, 1990'larda tarımsal üretimin yerini tüketim odaklı yapılar alırken, kırsal alanlar, kendine özgü kültür, toplum ve mekânsal özellikleri olan bir özne olarak ele alınmaya başlanmıştır. Bu süreç, kırsal alanların arka bahçesi olmaktan öteye geçerek, ekonomik olarak yükseltilerek, tam kentleşme sorunsalına farklı mekansallaşmalarla dahil olmuştur. Tarımsal üretim dışında, turizm ve sanayi gibi yeni ekonomik alanlara odaklanmaya başlayan kırsal alan, üniversitelerin kırsalda büyük kampüsler kurması sürece dahil olmuştur. İzmir, tarımsal üretimin yoğun olduğu geçmişi ve liman kenti olma özelliğiyle kırsal soylulaştırmanın etkilerini araştırmak için uygun bir örnek sunmaktadır. Araştırma, kırsal soylulaştırmayı turizm, sanayi ve öğrencileşme gibi dinamiklerle ilişkilendirerek, İzmir hinterlandındaki üç bölgedeki mekânsal, sosyal ve kültürel dönüşümleri incelemektedir. Kuşçular, Yağcılar ve Demircili (Urla) mahalleleri, turizm başlığı altında turistik rotaların gelişimi teması çerçevesinde incelenmektedir. Yukarı Kızılca, Aşağı Kızılca, Çiniliköy ve Armutlu (Kemalpaşa) mahalleleri ise sanayi rotasının uzantısı bağlamında değerlendirilmektedir. Son olarak, Gülbahçe (Urla) mahallesi, öğrencilerin mekâna ilişmesi açısından incelenmiştir.

In the 1980s and 1990s, rural areas evolved beyond their traditional association with agriculture, becoming spaces where economic, social, and spatial production intersected. Although the concept of rural gentrification was introduced to the literature in 1965, it was in the 1990s, when agricultural production was supplanted by consumption-driven economic structures, that rural spaces began to be considered not as objects, but as subjects with distinct cultural, social, and spatial characteristics. This process has moved beyond rural areas being seen as the backyard of urban spaces, instead being economically elevated and integrated into the issue of complete urbanization through different forms of spatialization. Rural areas, which began to focus on new economic sectors such as tourism and industry, were further transformed by the establishment of large university campuses in rural regions. İzmir, with its history of intensive agricultural production and its role as a port city, provides an insightful case for examining the effects of rural gentrification. This research investigates rural gentrification by connecting it to dynamics such as tourism, industry, and studentification, and analyzes the spatial, social, and cultural transformations in three regions within İzmir's hinterland. The neighborhoods of Kuşçular, Yağcılar, and Demircili (Urla) are examined under the theme of the development of touristic routes within the scope of tourism. The neighborhoods of Yukarı Kızılca, Aşağı Kızılca, Çiniliköy, and Armutlu (Kemalpaşa) are evaluated in the context of the extension of industrial routes. Lastly, the Gülbahçe (Urla) neighborhood is analyzed in terms of students' attachment to place.
