Article Determining Scenario Based Highway Routes Using Geographic Information Systems; a Case Study of Simav-Kutahya Routes, Turkey(Pamukkale Üniversitesi, 2014) Erdem, UmutTransportation planning requires more efforts from city planners to use rational techniques to determine optimum road routes. To fulfill this requirement, this study aims at generating the cheapest and the shortest scenario based routes using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) Digital Elevation Model (DEM) with Least Cost Path analysis between the Simav and the Kutahya cities, and comparing them with existing routes. For generating the shortest and the cheapest route, these cities are selected as sample since the study region is located in the transition area between central Anatolia and Aegean Region which has access to the sea and regional ports. The methodology used in this study is composed of three parts: first part consists of two steps; (i) generating the factors and (ii) determining scenarios focusing on different transportation themes that are used in the study process. In second part all factors are weighed regarding scenarios. In the third part of the study the outputs Path A (cheapest) and Path B (shortest) are generated by Least Cost Path analysis. The output routes were compared not only with each other, but also with the existing routes in terms of the generated factors.Article Citation - WoS: 18Citation - Scopus: 19A Suppressed Demand Analysis Method of the Transportation Disadvantaged in Policy Making(Taylor and Francis Ltd., 2009) Duvarcı, Yavuz; Mizokami, ShoshiThis paper proposes a method for estimating transportation supply requirements when the suppressed demand of the transportation disadvantaged (TD) can be calculated and added to existing demand for travel. The underlying assumption is that the travel conditions of these TD groups must be equal to the 'conventional' demand, known as 'full release'. Utilising the modelling approach for TD, suppressed demand analysis, diagnosis of difficulties and equity between conventional and disadvantaged groups were realised, while elaborating special cases for the most vulnerable TD groups (such as elderly and disabled persons) and simultaneously identifying areas of difficulty. From the early virtual results, it is concluded that, for the full release of suppressed trips (only a 5% increase), policy makers must be ready to face some financial burdens, requiring coordination of effort to both standardise these TD groups and reduce the costs incurred by operators.Article Citation - WoS: 16Citation - Scopus: 20Groundwater Recharge Estimation Using Hydrus 1d Model in Alaşehir Sub-Basin of Gediz Basin in Turkey(Springer Verlag, 2019) Tonkul, Serhat; Baba, Alper; Şimşek, Celalettin; Durukan, Seda; Demirkesen, Ali Can; Tayfur, GökmenGediz Basin, located in the western part of Turkey constituting 2% land of the country, has an important groundwater potential in the area. Alasehir sub-basin, located in the southeast of the Gediz Basin and subject to the extensive withdrawal for the irrigation, constitutes the study area. Natural recharge to the sub-basin due to precipitation is numerically investigated in this study. For this purpose, 25 research wells, whose depths range from 20 to 50 m, were drilled to observe the recharge and collect the necessary field data for the numerical model. Meteorological data were collected from 3 weather stations installed in the study area. The numerical model HYDRUS was calibrated using the field water content data. Soil characterization was done on the core samples; the aquifer characterization was performed, and the alluvial aquifer recharge due to precipitation was calculated. As a result, the computed recharge value ranges from 21.78 to 68.52 mm, with an average value of 43.09 mm. According to the numerical model, this amount of recharge corresponds to 10% of the amount of annual rainfall.Article Citation - WoS: 6Citation - Scopus: 7An Entropy-Based Analysis of Lane Changing Behavior: An Interactive Approach(Taylor and Francis Ltd., 2017) Koşun, Çağlar; Özdemir, SerhanObjectives: As a novelty, this article proposes the nonadditive entropy framework for the description of driver behaviors during lane changing. The authors also state that this entropy framework governs the lane changing behavior in traffic flow in accordance with the long-range vehicular interactions and traffic safety. Methods: The nonadditive entropy framework is the new generalized theory of thermostatistical mechanics. Vehicular interactions during lane changing are considered within this framework. The interactive approach for the lane changing behavior of the drivers is presented in the traffic flow scenarios presented in the article. According to the traffic flow scenarios, 4 categories of traffic flow and driver behaviors are obtained. Through the scenarios, comparative analyses of nonadditive and additive entropy domains are also provided. Results: Two quadrants of the categories belong to the nonadditive entropy; the rest are involved in the additive entropy domain. Driving behaviors are extracted and the scenarios depict that nonadditivity matches safe driving well, whereas additivity corresponds to unsafe driving. Furthermore, the cooperative traffic system is considered in nonadditivity where the long-range interactions are present. However, the uncooperative traffic system falls into the additivity domain. The analyses also state that there would be possible traffic flow transitions among the quadrants. This article shows that lane changing behavior could be generalized as nonadditive, with additivity as a special case, based on the given traffic conditions. Conclusions: The nearest and close neighbor models are well within the conventional additive entropy framework. In this article, both the long-range vehicular interactions and safe driving behavior in traffic are handled in the nonadditive entropy domain. It is also inferred that the Tsallis entropy region would correspond to mandatory lane changing behavior, whereas additive and either the extensive or nonextensive entropy region would match discretionary lane changing behavior. This article states that driver behaviors would be in the nonadditive entropy domain to provide a safe traffic stream and hence with vehicle accident prevention in mind.Article Citation - WoS: 9Citation - Scopus: 12Compositing Climate Change Vulnerability of a Mediterranean Region Using Spatiotemporally Dynamic Proxies for Ecological and Socioeconomic Impacts and Stabilities(Springer Verlag, 2017) Demirkesen, Ali Can; Evrendilek, FatihThe study presents a new methodology to quantify spatiotemporal dynamics of climate change vulnerability at a regional scale adopting a new conceptual model of vulnerability as a function of climate change impacts, ecological stability, and socioeconomic stability. Spatiotemporal trends of equally weighted proxy variables for the three vulnerability components were generated to develop a composite climate change vulnerability index (CCVI) for a Mediterranean region of Turkey combining Landsat time series data, digital elevation model (DEM)-derived data, ordinary kriging, and geographical information system. Climate change impact was based on spatiotemporal trends of August land surface temperature (LST) between 1987 and 2016. Ecological stability was based on DEM, slope, aspect, and spatiotemporal trends of normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), while socioeconomic stability was quantified as a function of spatiotemporal trends of land cover, population density, per capita gross domestic product, and illiteracy. The zones ranked on the five classes of no-to-extreme vulnerability were identified where highly and moderately vulnerable lands covered 0.02% (12 km2) and 11.8% (6374 km2) of the study region, respectively, mostly occurring in the interior central part. The adoption of this composite CCVI approach is expected to lead to spatiotemporally dynamic policy recommendations towards sustainability and tailor preventive and mitigative measures to locally specific characteristics of coupled ecological–socioeconomic systems.Article Citation - WoS: 3Citation - Scopus: 4Inflation Differentials Across Regions in Turkey(School of Economics and Business in Sarajevo, 2016) Duran, Hasan EnginThe aim of the present article is to analyze the convergence of regional inflation rates in Turkey from 2004 to 2015 by adopting sigma convergence and distribution dynamics approaches. The outcomes of our research can be summarized in two groups. First, inflation disparities tend to decline over time, especially during the post-crisis period after 2010. Hence, the aggregate price stabilization and disinflation process in Turkey is coupled with convergence in inflation rates across regions. Second, in addition to the findings in the literature, we find that regions change their relative inflation rate positions quite often. This indicates that regional inflation behavior is random and non-structural, as the relatively high and low inflationary places tend to change their quintiles frequently. The results imply several policy suggestions. First, achieving inflation convergence is a harder task than initially understood, as it seems to show random behavior. Second, trade integration can be an option to foster regional price convergence.Article Citation - WoS: 6Citation - Scopus: 9Dynamics of Business Cycle Synchronization in Turkey(Savez Ekonomista Vojvodine, 2015) Duran, Hasan EnginThe aim of the present article is to investigate the economic determinants of the synchronization across regional business cycles in Turkey between 1975 and 2010. The vast majority of studies in this field have concentrated on well-known determinants, such as inter-regional trade, financial integration, and industrial specialization, while largely ignoring spatial and geographical factors, including differences across regions in agglomeration, localization economies, market size, and urbanization. In this article, we incorporate these variables into our analysis and evaluate their roles in the comovement of regional business cycles. Our findings indicate two major results: first, low degree of synchronization during 1975-2000 has switched to relatively more correlated and synchronously moving regional cycles during 2004-2010. Second, having tested the variety of determinants, we find that the pairs of regions that have more similar industrial structure and market size, trade integration, and arbitrary degree of agglomeration and urbanization tend to synchronize more. Significance of these variables is robustly evident regardless of the time period analyzed and of the type of methodology employed.Article Citation - WoS: 9Citation - Scopus: 10Modelling Trip Distribution With Fuzzy and Genetic Fuzzy Systems(Taylor and Francis Ltd., 2013) Kompil, Mert; Çelik, Hüseyin MuratThis paper explores the potential capabilities of fuzzy and genetic fuzzy system approaches in urban trip distribution modelling with some new features. First, a simple fuzzy rule-based system (FRBS) and a novel genetic fuzzy rule-based system [GFRBS: a fuzzy system improved by a knowledge base learning process with genetic algorithms (GAs)] are designed to model intra-city passenger flows for Istanbul. Subsequently, their accuracy, applicability and generalizability characteristics are evaluated against the well-known gravity- and neural network (NN)-based trip distribution models. The overall results show that: traditional doubly constrained gravity models are still simple and efficient; NNs may not show expected performance when they are forced to satisfy trip constraints; simply-designed FRBSs, learning from observations and expertise, are both efficient and interpretable even if the data are large and noisy; and use of GAs in fuzzy rule-based learning considerably increases modelling performance, although it brings additional computation cost.Article Citation - WoS: 22Citation - Scopus: 28The Impact of Rail Transit Investment on the Residential Property Values in Developing Countries: The Case of Izmir Subway, Turkey(Emerald Group Publishing Ltd., 2006) Çelik, Hüseyin Murat; Yankaya, UğurPurpose The purpose of this paper is to test whether the rail transit investment in Izmir, Turkey has had positive valuation impacts on the surrounding residential properties, and to estimate the value of travel time using relevant parameters. Design/methodology/approach The necessary data were collected via a survey including all real-estate agents in the area. To test the research question, the Hedonic Price Model (HPM) is used as the research technique. The obtained parameters are also used to estimate the value of travel time. Findings The findings of the models has indicated that the proximity to rail stations was valued at $250-300 per meters, and the value of travel per hour was $1.47-1.83 on average. Research limitations/implications These findings should be checked with more consistent database using transaction process, and the mortgage loan rate which was not legislated at the time of study. Practical implications Until a mortgage loan rate is registered in turkey, the estimated parameters can be used in the cost-benefit analysis of rail transit investments in Turkey. Originality/value The theoretical premise that “any improvement in accessibility will be capitalized into the land values” is tested one more time in a developing country case whose urban environment is substantially different from those of the developed world, especially the North American cities. Furthermore, a new methodology using the HPM parameters is also suggested to estimate the value of travel time.
