    Asymmetries in Regional Development: Does Tfp or Capital Accumulation Matter for Spatial Inequalities?

    In the literature on regional inequalities, commonly adopted Neo-Classical theoretical framework (Y=AK ? (hL) 1?? ) implies that disparities may arise for two reasons, either due to differences in factor endowments or TFP differentials. In the current study, we address the following rarely examined questions: i. Do regional income inequalities arise due to TFP or factor endowment disparities across regions? ii. What's their relative contribution to the level of and change in regional inequality? Our dataset covers the period 2004–2014 and 81 Turkish provinces. We use mathematical decompositions, Panel unit root, panel VAR and generalized impulse-response analyses. Results are summarized in two groups. First, the main contributor to income inequality is the disparity in regional factor endowments, whereas TFP differentials are relatively less influential. Second, the main source of decline in disparities seems to be the narrowing of TFP differences. © 2019 Elsevier B.V.

    Geological and Hydrogeochemical Properties of Geothermal Systems in the Southeastern Region of Turkey

    The Anatolia region is one of the most seismically active regions in the world. It has a considerably high level of geothermal energy potential thanks to its geological and tectonic settings. The Southeastern Anatolia Region (GAP) is located in the south of Bitlis-Zagros Suture Zone (BZSZ) which is in the Arabian foreland. During the neotectonic period, the folded structures have been developed under the influence of tectonic compression from the Upper Miocene in the GAP Region where it is closely related to active tectonics. These tectonic activities produce more geothermal resources. Few studies have been carried out in this region for geothermal energy. Limited portions of the geothermal resources have been used both for thermal tourism and greenhouses in the GAP region. The aim of this study is to determine geological, tectonic and hydrogeochemical properties of a geothermal system in the GAP Region. The result indicates that the surface temperatures of geothermal fluids are from 20 to 84.5 °C A large number of abandoned oil wells, whose temperature reaches 140 °C, are found in the region. Also, hydrogeochemical results show that deep circulated geothermal fluids are enriched with Na-Cl and shallow geothermal system fluids have Na−HCO 3 and Ca-SO 4 characters because of cold water mixing and water-rock interaction. Cold waters are generally of Ca-Mg−HCO 3 and Ca−HCO 3 type. Cation geothermometers were used for determining reservoir temperature of the geothermal resources in the region. The results show that the reservoir temperature of these geothermal resources ranges from 50 °C to 200 °C. The isotope data (oxygen-18, deuterium and tritium) suggests that geothermal fluid is formed by local recharge and deep circulation.

    Determining the Complexity of Multi-Component Conformal Systems: a Platoon-Based Approach

    Many systems in nature and engineering are composed of subsystems. These subsystems may be formed in a linear, planar or spatial array. A typical example of these formations is a chain of vehicles known as platoon formation in traffic flow. Platoon formation of vehicles is a linear or planar formation of vehicles where a certain and a constant headway, and sideway if applicable, is provided in between every and each one of them. It is argued in this paper that a well-automated platoon formation of vehicles is an extreme case of conformity. During this transformation from a many degrees of freedom formation to a solid object, Tsallis q value is computed to be ranging from one extreme case of q=3 to the other where q=1, when classified in terms of inverse temperatures of clearance fluctuations. At one extreme of q=3, one observes unbounded fluctuations in clearance fluctuations so that inverse temperature distributions approach a Dirac delta at the origin. At the other extreme of q=1, fluctuations in clearance tend to zero asymptotically, where a solid structure of agents (vehicles) emerges. The transition from q=3 to q=1 is investigated through synthetic and experimental clearance fluctuations between the cars. The results show that during the transition from q=3 to q=1, the platoon loses its many degrees of freedom (dof) of motion until a solid single object emerges. Authors assert that the Tsallis q value of a platoon of vehicles is limited to 3>q<1.

    A Superstatistical Model of Vehicular Traffic Flow

    In the analysis of vehicular traffic flow, a myriad of techniques have been implemented. In this study, superstatistics is used in modeling the traffic flow on a highway segment. Traffic variables such as vehicular speeds, volume, and headway were collected for three days. For the superstatistical approach, at least two distinct time scales must exist, so that a superposition of nonequilibrium systems assumption could hold. When the slow dynamics of the vehicle speeds exhibit a Gaussian distribution in between the fluctuations of the system at large, one speaks of a relaxation to a local equilibrium. These Gaussian distributions are found with corresponding standard deviations 1/β. This translates into a series of fluctuating beta values, hence the statistics of statistics, superstatistics. The traffic flow model has generated an inverse temperature parameter (beta) distribution as well as the speed distribution. This beta distribution has shown that the fluctuations in beta are distributed with respect to a chi-square distribution. It must be mentioned that two distinct Tsallis q values are specified: one is time-dependent and the other is independent. A ramification of these q values is that the highway segment and the traffic flow generate separate characteristics. This highway segment in question is not only nonadditive in nature, but a nonequilibrium driven system, with frequent relaxations to a Gaussian.

    Energy Efficient Building Block Design: an Exergy Perspective

    This study introduces the exergy analysis method into the field of urban planning, in order to find out the amount of energy that can be conserved in a building block when an energy efficient construction design is applied. This was done in four steps. First, energy efficient design parameters were derived from the literature and design alternatives were developed accordingly. Second, data was gathered from the case area for the exergy calculations. Third, exergy analysis of existing building blocks and proposed design alternatives were separately carried out. Finally, the amount of decrease in the exergy loss due to suggested energy efficient design was found out. The results show that the exergy efficiency of the existing building blocks is about 2%, while the proposed design alternatives will be around 10-11%. The overall exergy loads of the alternative plans were found as 166.3 W, 225.1 W, 142.5 W and 137.8 W respectively for winter and 105.4 W, 140.0 W, 89.9 W and 86.3 W respectively for summer, on a housing unit basis. As a result, the suitability and importance of the exergy analysis on the built environment was proven, by revealing actual and considerable energy conservation and sustainable use of energy through application of energy efficient design parameters.

    Transportation Disadvantage Impedance Indexing: a Methodological Approach To Reduce Policy Shortcomings

    Access to transport systems and the connection to such systems provided to essential economic and social activities are critical to determine households' transportation disadvantage levels. In spite of the developments in better identifying transportation disadvantaged groups, the lack of effective policies resulted in the continuum of the issue as a significant problem. This paper undertakes a pilot case investigation as test bed for a new approach developed to reduce transportation policy shortcomings. The approach, 'disadvantage-impedance index', aims to ease transportation disadvantages by employing representative parameters to measure the differences between policy alternatives run in a simulation environment. Implemented in the Japanese town of Arao, the index uses trip-making behaviour and resident stated preference data. The results of the index reveal that even a slight improvement in accessibility and travel quality indicators makes a significant difference in easing disadvantages. The index, integrated into a four-step model, proves to be highly robust and useful in terms of quick diagnosis in capturing effective actions, and developing potentially efficient policies.

    Conflicts Over Locally Unwanted Land Uses (lulus): Reasons and Solutions for Case Studies in Izmir (turkey)

    Land use planning affects many different and usually conflicting interests. While every land use planning decision has a potential of creating conflicts, Locally Unwanted Land Uses (LULUs) are the most conflict facing subjects in urban land use planning processes. This paper aims to answer the question “what are the reasons and solutions for conflicts in the planning processes of LULUs”. This paper is based on a research examining LULU cases in İzmir, Turkey including solid waste facilities, fisheries and quarries to find out the reasons and the solutions for LULU conflicts. The research findings suggest that the conflicts stem not only from negative effects of LULUs on environment and community but also from procedural deficiencies such as lack of knowledge and lack of trust. The findings also call for planning processes with more consideration of local level and public participation seeking for consensus. Meanwhile, the conclusions underline the limitations for the success of participatory processes in which conflicts are resolved with attempts including symbolic benefits rather than considering exact interests of local people. © 2016 Elsevier Ltd

    Sample Size Needed for Calibrating Trip Distribution and Behavior of the Gravity Model

    Conventional calibration algorithms of trip distribution models assume that the analyst has a whole base year trip matrix. To attain a whole trip matrix, the sample size for travel surveys needed to be as large as possible. However, this could be very expensive especially in large cities. Some studies in the past showed a small sized sample would be enough to estimate functional parameters of observed trip length frequency distribution. But the performance of a gravity model with small sized samples has never been addressed. This empirical study has shown that sample sizes as small as 1000 (even smaller for quick response studies) could be as dependable as large sample surveys using a line search calibration algorithm. © 2009 Elsevier Ltd.     Women Running for Neighborhood Offices in a Turkish City: Motivations and Resources for Electoral Candidacy

    This study is about how gender and local urban scales interact with each other to influence individuals' motivations and resources for political recruitment. The data came from interviews with twenty women who ran for and lost the 2004 local elections for their neighborhood office, muhtarlik, in Eskisehir, Turkey. Considering both individual and institutional factors and the neighborhood scale as important for women's candidacy for local offices, this paper relies on a "relational" view of citizenship while examining the mediating roles of the local scale for citizenship. My findings overall disagreed with the arguments that "women's interests" drive women to enter politics and that the local offices provide more opportunities for women's political recruitment. As women's roles and responsibilities had been changing across multiple spaces, they ran for elections to search for ways to practice their capacities in public arenas. Yet to the electorates, first, even women with high qualities for the office did not appear as the most qualified candidates. Second, most electorates tended to evaluate candidacy qualities in relation to the neighborhood office's weak status in Turkish political system and as an unskilled job. Third, they seemed to associate this "job" positively with men's traditional domestic role as the main breadwinner, consider women's charity and communal works as women's traditional care responsibilities, and to vote mostly for over-middle-aged male incumbents with locally embedded relations. Finally, women missed an opportunity for their candidacy by not transforming their local network-based assets into resources for candidacy.
