It is very desirable to reduce the densification of the SOFC electroltytes to i) avoid microstructural coarsening of the composite anode layers, which are co-sintered with the electolyte layer in the anode supported SOFC fabrication scheme and ii) reduce energy consumption during SOFC manufacturing. We have recently demostrated a novel infiltration-aided sintering route to densify GDC ceramics at 1200 degrees C. In the present work, we present the electrical properties of GDC ceramics fabricated thusly. Comparison of high density (>= 95%) samples fabricated by conventional or infiltration-aided sintering reveal that at 700 degrees C, similar total electrical conductivities are obtained, while at 300 degrees C, specific grain boundary resistivity is smaller in the latter. Bulk (grain) conductivity is higher in porous GDC ceramics (relative density <= 90%) fabricated by infiltration-aided sintering than the conventionally sintered ones with similar porosities. Finally, open circuit voltage of 0.84 V at 700 degrees C, obtained under dilute hydrogen and stagnant air conditions suggests that GDC ceramics densified by infiltration-aided sintering are suitable for use as SOFC electrolytes.Article Citation - WoS: 3Citation - Scopus: 3Determining the Complexity of Multi-Component Conformal Systems: a Platoon-Based Approach(Elsevier Ltd., 2017) Koşun, Çağlar; Özdemir, SerhanMany systems in nature and engineering are composed of subsystems. These subsystems may be formed in a linear, planar or spatial array. A typical example of these formations is a chain of vehicles known as platoon formation in traffic flow. Platoon formation of vehicles is a linear or planar formation of vehicles where a certain and a constant headway, and sideway if applicable, is provided in between every and each one of them. It is argued in this paper that a well-automated platoon formation of vehicles is an extreme case of conformity. During this transformation from a many degrees of freedom formation to a solid object, Tsallis q value is computed to be ranging from one extreme case of q=3 to the other where q=1, when classified in terms of inverse temperatures of clearance fluctuations. At one extreme of q=3, one observes unbounded fluctuations in clearance fluctuations so that inverse temperature distributions approach a Dirac delta at the origin. At the other extreme of q=1, fluctuations in clearance tend to zero asymptotically, where a solid structure of agents (vehicles) emerges. The transition from q=3 to q=1 is investigated through synthetic and experimental clearance fluctuations between the cars. The results show that during the transition from q=3 to q=1, the platoon loses its many degrees of freedom (dof) of motion until a solid single object emerges. Authors assert that the Tsallis q value of a platoon of vehicles is limited to 3>q<1.Article Citation - WoS: 14Citation - Scopus: 15A Superstatistical Model of Vehicular Traffic Flow(Elsevier Ltd., 2016) Koşun, Çağlar; Özdemir, SerhanIn the analysis of vehicular traffic flow, a myriad of techniques have been implemented. In this study, superstatistics is used in modeling the traffic flow on a highway segment. Traffic variables such as vehicular speeds, volume, and headway were collected for three days. For the superstatistical approach, at least two distinct time scales must exist, so that a superposition of nonequilibrium systems assumption could hold. When the slow dynamics of the vehicle speeds exhibit a Gaussian distribution in between the fluctuations of the system at large, one speaks of a relaxation to a local equilibrium. These Gaussian distributions are found with corresponding standard deviations 1/β. This translates into a series of fluctuating beta values, hence the statistics of statistics, superstatistics. The traffic flow model has generated an inverse temperature parameter (beta) distribution as well as the speed distribution. This beta distribution has shown that the fluctuations in beta are distributed with respect to a chi-square distribution. It must be mentioned that two distinct Tsallis q values are specified: one is time-dependent and the other is independent. A ramification of these q values is that the highway segment and the traffic flow generate separate characteristics. This highway segment in question is not only nonadditive in nature, but a nonequilibrium driven system, with frequent relaxations to a Gaussian.Article Citation - WoS: 25Citation - Scopus: 27Trabecular Bone Recovers From Mechanical Unloading Primarily by Restoring Its Mechanical Function Rather Than Its Morphology(Elsevier Ltd., 2014) Özçivici, Engin; Judex, StefanUpon returning to normal ambulatory activities, the recovery of trabecular bone lost during unloading is limited. Here, using a mouse population that displayed a large range of skeletal susceptibility to unloading and reambulation, we tested the impact of changes in trabecular bone morphology during unloading and reambulation on its simulated mechanical properties. Female adult mice from a double cross of BALB/cByJ and C3H/HeJ strains (n = 352) underwent 3. wk of hindlimb unloading followed by 3. wk of reambulation. Normally ambulating mice served as controls (n = 30). As quantified longitudinally by in vivo μCT, unloading led to an average loss of 43% of trabecular bone volume fraction (BV/TV) in the distal femur. Finite element models of the μCT tomographies showed that deterioration of the trabecular structure raised trabecular peak Von-Mises (PVM) stresses on average by 27%, indicating a significant increase in the risk of mechanical failure compared to baseline. Further, skewness of the Von-Mises stress distributions (SVM) increased by 104% with unloading, indicating that the trabecular structure became inefficient in resisting the applied load. During reambulation, bone of experimental mice recovered on average only 10% of its lost BV/TV. Even though the addition of trabecular tissue was small during reambulation, PVM and SVM as indicators of risk of mechanical failure decreased by 56% and 57%, respectively. Large individual differences in the response of trabecular bone, together with a large sample size, facilitated stratification of experimental mice based on the level of recovery. As a fraction of all mice, 66% of the population showed some degree of recovery in BV/TV while in 89% and 87% of all mice, PVM and SVM decreased during reambulation, respectively. At the end of the reambulation phase, only 8% of the population recovered half of the unloading induced losses in BV/TV while 50% and 49% of the population recovered half of the unloading induced deterioration in PVM and SVM, respectively. The association between morphological and mechanical variables was strong at baseline but progressively decreased during the unloading and reambulation cycles. The preferential recovery of trabecular micromechanical properties over bone volume fraction emphasizes that mechanical demand during reambulation does not, at least initially, seek to restore bone's morphology but its mechanical integrity.Article Citation - WoS: 8Citation - Scopus: 9Quantitative Trait Loci That Modulate Trabecular Bone's Risk of Failure During Unloading and Reloading(Elsevier Ltd., 2014) Özçivici, Engin; Zhang, Weidong; Donahue, Leah Rae; Judex, StefanGenetic makeup of an individual is a strong determinant of the morphologic and mechanical properties of bone. Here, in an effort to identify quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for changes in the simulated mechanical parameters of trabecular bone during altered mechanical demand, we subjected 352. second generation female adult (16. weeks old) BALBxC3H mice to 3. weeks of hindlimb unloading followed by 3. weeks of reambulation. Longitudinal in vivo microcomputed tomography (μCT) scans tracked trabecular changes in the distal femur. Tomographies were directly translated into finite element (FE) models and subjected to a uniaxial compression test. Apparent trabecular stiffness and components of the Von Mises (VM) stress distributions were computed for the distal metaphysis and associated with QTLs. At baseline, five QTLs explained 20% of the variation in trabecular peak stresses across the mouse population. During unloading, three QTLs accounted for 14% of the variability in peak stresses. During reambulation, one QTL accounted for 5% of the variability in peak stresses. QTLs were also identified for mechanically induced changes in stiffness, median stress values and skewness of stress distributions. There was little overlap between QTLs identified for baseline and QTLs for longitudinal changes in mechanical properties, suggesting that distinct genes may be responsible for the mechanical response of trabecular bone. Unloading related QTLs were also different from reambulation related QTLs. Further, QTLs identified here for mechanical properties differed from previously identified QTLs for trabecular morphology, perhaps revealing novel gene targets for reducing fracture risk in individuals exposed to unloading and for maximizing the recovery of trabecular bone's mechanical properties during reambulation.Article Citation - WoS: 24Citation - Scopus: 26Cure Kinetics of Vapor Grown Carbon Nanofiber (vgcnf) Modified Epoxy Resin Suspensions and Fracture Toughness of Their Resulting Nanocomposites(Elsevier Ltd., 2009) Seyhan, Abdullah Tuğrul; Sun, Z.; Deitzel, J.; Tanoğlu, Metin; Heider, D.In this study, the cure kinetics of Cycom 977-20, an aerospace grade toughened epoxy resin, and its suspensions containing various amounts (1, 3 and 5 wt.%) of vapor grown carbon nanofibers (VGCNFs) with and without chemical treatment were monitored via dynamic and isothermal dynamic scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurements. For this purpose, VGCNFs were first oxidized in nitric acid and then functionalized with 3-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxy silane (GPTMS) coupling agent. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy was subsequently used to verify the chemical functional groups grafted onto the surfaces of VGCNFs. Sonication technique was conducted to facilitate proper dispersion of as-received, acid treated and silanized VGCNFs within epoxy resin. Dynamic DSC measurements showed that silanized VGCNF modified resin suspensions exhibited higher heat of cure compared to those with as-received VGCNFs. Experimentally obtained isothermal DSC data was then correlated with Kamal phenomenological model. Based on the model predictions, it was found that silanized VGCNFs maximized the cure reaction rates at the very initial stage of the reaction. Accordingly, an optimized curing cycle was applied to harden resin suspensions. Fracture testing was then carried out on the cured samples in order to relate the curing behavior of VGCNF modified resin suspensions to mechanical response of their resulting nanocomposites. With addition of 1 wt.% of silanized VGCNFs, the fracture toughness value of neat epoxy was found to be improved by 12%. Faruk; Özdemir, İ.Fe2O3-TiO2 coatings were successfully prepared on glass slide substrates using sol-gel method for photocatalytic applications. The phase structure, thermal, microstructure and surface properties of the coatings were extensively characterized by using X-ray diffractometry (XRD), differential thermal analysis/thermograviometry (DTA/TG), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Their adhesion and absorbance properties were investigated by a scratch tester and UV-vis spectroscopy. Four different solutions were prepared by changing Fe/Ti molar ratios. Glass substrates were coated by solutions of Ti-alkoxide, Fe-chloride, glaciel acetic acid and isopropanol. The obtained gel films were dried at 300 °C for 10 min and subsequently heat-treated at 500 °C for 5 min in air. The oxide thin films were annealed at 600 °C for 60 min in air. The influence of Fe3+ concentration and number of layers on structure of the films was established. In addition, XRD results revealed that Fe2O3-TiO2 films composed of TiO2, Fe2Ti3O9, Ti3O5 and Fe3O4 phases. According to DTA/TG result, it was determined that endothermic and exothermic reactions were formed at temperatures between 80 and 650 °C due to solvent removal, combustion of carbon based materials and oxidation of Fe and Ti. SEM observations exhibited that the coating structure becomes more homogeneous depending on an increase of Fe/Ti molar ratios and thus a regular surface morphology forms with increasing Fe/Ti ratio. It was also seen that as the Fe/Ti ratio increases the surface roughness of the films increases. Critical adhesion force of thin films with Fe/Ti ratio of 0, 0.07, 0.18 and 0.73 were found to be 9, 25, 28 and 21 mN, respectively. Two adaptive control algorithms are developed: one for the case when no road condition information is available, and one for the case when certain information is known only about the instant type of road surface on which the vehicle is moving. The vehicle control system with an adaptive control law keeps the speed of the vehicle as desired by applying more power to the drive wheels where the additional driving force at the non-skidding wheel will compensate for the loss of the driving force at the skidding wheel, and also arranges the direction of the vehicle motion by changing the steering angle of the two front steering wheels. Stability analysis proves that the vehicle position and velocity errors are both bounded. The precipitation process was then repeated in the presence of PDDA, CTAB, and EDTA at the mixing temperatures of 30 °C, 50 °C, 70 °C, and 90 °C. The presence of these additives was seen to greatly suppress the formation of aragonite. Among these additives, EDTA was the one that showed the most prominent effects on particle morphology of CaCO3. The sequence of pH adjustment appeared to be a critical factor for the additive functionality.Article Citation - WoS: 53Citation - Scopus: 63Artificial Neural Network (ann) Prediction of Compressive Strength of Vartm Processed Polymer Composites(Elsevier Ltd., 2005) Seyhan, Abdullah Tuğrul; Tayfur, Gökmen; Karakurt, Murat; Tanoğlu, MetinA three layer feed forward artificial neural network (ANN) model having three input neurons, one output neuron and two hidden neurons was developed to predict the ply-lay up compressive strength of VARTM processed E-glass/ polyester composites. The composites were manufactured using fabric preforms consolidated with 0, 3 and 6 wt.% of thermoplastic binder. The learning of ANN was accomplished by a backpropagation algorithm. A good agreement between the measured and the predicted values was obtained. Testing of the model was done within low average error levels of 3.28%. Furthermore, the predictions of ANN model were compared with those obtained from a multi-linear regression (MLR) model. It was found that ANN model has better predictions than MLR model for the experimental data. Also, the ANN model was subjected to a sensitivity analysis to obtain its response. As a result, the ANN model was found to have an ability to yield a desired level of ply-lay up compressive strength values for the composites processed with the addition of the thermoplastic binder.
