TGQDs with zigzag edges exhibit a degenerate band of states at the Fermi level. For the charge neutral TGQD, the shell is expected to be half-filled by spin polarised electrons leading to finite magnetisation. Using four-band tight-binding and effective Kane-Mele models, we show that, if the TGQD is spin polarised, the low energy optical absorption spectrum reveals two distinct peaks corresponding to left and right circularly polarised light while the unpolarised TGQD shows only one peak. This allows optical detection of spin polarisation, its direction and the strength of spin-orbit coupling in TGQDs.Conference Object Citation - WoS: 17Citation - Scopus: 21Place Management of a Creative City: the Case of Izmir(Inderscience Enterprises Ltd., 2017) Mengi, Onur; Durmaz Drinkwater, Sıdıka Bahar; Öner, Aslı Ceylan; Velibeyoğlu, KorayThis study investigates how place management is used to render a creative city through the combination of soft factors as intangible characteristics and hard factors as tangible characteristics of the built environment. The study focuses on Izmir, Turkey; exploring its potential as an emerging creative city. The methodology is a descriptive analysis of recent urban design and planning activities of creative cities, reviews projects and strategies in Izmir. Findings provide a framework for place management tools and their strategic use for integration of art, design, creativity and knowledge in creative cities. Place management is used as a tool for image building and identity enhancement, and for quality of place to attract creative and knowledge workers. In the case of Izmir, hard factors triggered the formation process whereas soft factors have taken strengthen the initiative. The aim of this paper, therefore, is to investigate the best ways of managing invaluable tangible and intangible assets of city-regions. The paper explores the importance of asset management of city-regions by giving special emphasis on their knowledge asset base. This paper develops and introduces a theoretical framework to conceptualise a new approach to articulate the strategic planning mechanism, so called the 6K1C framework. The 6K1C framework is part of the strategic planning process of continuous improvement of overall public sector performance. One of the earliest uses of geothermal energy was for heating and it was used extensively by Romans in Turkey. The Aegean region is favoured by a large number of thermal springs known since ancient times. However, it was first in the 20th century that geothermal energy was used on a large scale for direct use and electricity generation. The country's installed heat capacity is 2,705 MWt for direct use and 322.39 MWe for power production. In parallel to developing geothermal energy applications in Turkey, many sites are now experiencing problems such as water contamination associated with geothermal fluid. Especially, the high temperature solution of elements and compounds, causes operational limitations in geothermal power plants. These limitations are due to the severe scaling and corrosion of geothermal fluid. A cubic volume in the middle of the images is extracted as REV (representative volume). The voids in the REV are discretised into anisotropic voxels using the commercial program of GeoDict. Seven computational domains with different voxel size in flow direction are generated. The velocity and pressure fields in the voids are obtained for Reynolds numbers ranging from 0.01 to 10. The obtained fields are used to determine the permeability and the Forchheimer coefficients. The performed calculations show that the nominal pore size changes with the voxel size in flow direction, however permeability and the Forchheimer coefficient approaches to the constant values.Article Citation - Scopus: 1Annealing-Based Model-Free Expectation Maximisation for Multi-Colour Flow Cytometry Data Clustering(Inderscience Enterprises Ltd., 2016) Köktürk, Başak Esin; Karaçalı, BilgeThis paper proposes an optimised model-free expectation maximisation method for automated clustering of high-dimensional datasets. The method is based on a recursive binary division strategy that successively divides an original dataset into distinct clusters. Each binary division is carriedout using a model-free expectation maximisation scheme that exploits the posterior probability computation capability of the quasi-supervised learningalgorithm subjected to a line-search optimisation over the reference set size parameter analogous to a simulated annealing approach. The divisions arecontinued until a division cost exceeds an adaptively determined limit. Experiment results on synthetic as well as real multi-colour flow cytometrydatasets showed that the proposed method can accurately capture the prominent clusters without requiring any prior knowledge on the number of clusters ortheir distribution models.
