Article A Simplified Molecular Imprinting Strategy Through Electrospinning of Polyacrylonitrile for Thin Film Microextraction of Selected Pesticides(Elsevier B.V., 2026) Şahin, A.; Akpinar, Y.; Yildirim, E.; Eroǧlu, A.E.; Boyaci, E.Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) have been extensively used as selective extractive phases for sample preparation because of their analyte-selective binding sites. However, MIP preparation requires optimized monomer-template interactions and long polymerization reactions. In this study, a novel and simple method of MIP preparation was proposed based on electrospinning. Instead of preparing analyte-monomer complexes before polymerization, model analytes (trifluralin and carbaryl) were directly dissolved in a polyacrylonitrile (PAN) solution, then electrospun into nanofibrous mats. This allowed for a means of preparation of highly crystalline, template-imprinted nanostructures with minimal synthetic complexity. Following the characterization studies for the new material, the extraction properties of the imprinted and nonimprinted electrospun mats were investigated in thin film microextraction (TFME) studies by extracting trifluralin and carbaryl from water samples, followed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC–MS) analysis. The optimization results showed that samplers containing 10.0 mg of MIP sorbents made by electrospinning of a solution containing 5.0 mg of template in 1.0 mL of PAN solution resulted in approximately 4 and 7 times enhanced extraction recoveries for carbaryl and trifluralin compared to samplers made of non-imprinted bulk PAN. Moreover, the cross-reactivity testing performed with non-template analytes (malathion and diazinon) suggested a more specific extraction towards trifluralin compared to carbaryl. The proposed new technique was also validated using computational methodology, which supported the experimental finding about higher selectivity towards trifluralin. This may signify a probability for structural orientation of partially charged trifluralin under an electrical field in electrospun PAN creating favorable extraction sites. © 2025 Elsevier B.V.Book Part Citation - Scopus: 1A Recycling Route of Plastics Via Electrospinning: From Daily Wastes To Functional Fibers(Walter de Gruyter GmbH, 2019) Isık, Tuğba; Horzum,N.; Demir, Mustafa MuammerSince large-scale plastic production has begun in the 1940s, plastics have been produced and used globally, bringing many advantages to modern life. The consumption of plastics has increased exponentially due to their low cost, chemical resistance, lightness, durability and ability to combine with other materials. However, plastic materials represent high tonnage in urban wastes, and it is known that these plastics discarded at the end of their useful life by filling the landfill sites. Electrospinning is a well-established and versatile technique for the fabrication of submicron fibers. In addition, it is a promising approach for the recycling of waste polymers without using complex methodologies. In this chapter, utilization of electrospinning approach for the recycling of daily wastes will be discussed. The literature about the daily wastes of both synthetic materials and natural/agricultural materials will be analyzed, and the applications of these materials will be given in detail. © 2019 Walter de Gruyter GmbH, Berlin/Boston. When combined with ambient mass spectrometry (MS), it can also serve as an electrospray ionization source. Therefore, it became a promising tool in analytical applications as it can significantly reduce the analysis time. However, the current CBS coatings are based on the immobilization of extractive particles in bulk polymeric glue, which constrains the diffusion of the analytes to reach the extractive phase; therefore, the full reward of the system cannot be taken at pre-equilibrium. This has sparked the notion of developing new CBS probes that exhibit enhanced kinetics. Results: With this aim, to generate a new extractive phase with improved extraction kinetics, poly(divinylbenzene) (PDVB) nanoparticles were synthesized by mini-emulsion polymerization and then immobilized into sub-micrometer (in diameter) sized polyacrylonitrile fibers which were obtained by electrospinning method. Following the optimization and characterization studies, the electrospun-coated blades were used to determine cholesterol, testosterone, and progesterone in plasma spots using the CBS-MS approach. For testosterone and progesterone, 10 ng mL−1 limits of quantification could be obtained, which was 200 ng mL−1 for cholesterol in spot-sized samples without including any pre-treatment steps to samples prior to extraction. Significance: The comparison of the initial kinetics for dip-coated and electrospun-coated CBS probes proved that the electrospinning process could enhance the extraction kinetics; therefore, it can be used for more sensitive analyses. The total analysis time with this method, from sample preparation to instrumental analysis, takes only 7 min, which suggests that the new probes are promising for fast diagnostic applications. © 2024 Elsevier B.V.Article Citation - WoS: 31Citation - Scopus: 33Modification of Carbon Fibre/Epoxy Composites by Polyvinyl Alcohol (pva) Based Electrospun Nanofibres(Adcotec Ltd., 2016) Beylergil, Bertan; Tanoğlu, Metin; Aktaş, EnginIn this study, the effects of modifying interlaminar region of unidirectional carbon fibre/epoxy composites by the incorporation of electrospun polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) nanofibres were investigated. PVA nanofibres were directly deposited onto the carbon fabrics by electrospinning method to improve mechanical performance of those composites. The features of the electrospun nanofibres were characterized by microscopy techniques. The unidirectional carbon fibre/epoxy composite laminates with/without PVA nanofibre interlayers were manufactured by vacuum-infusion technique in a [0]4 configuration. Tensile, three-point bending, compression, Charpy-impact and Mode-I fracture toughness tests (Double Cantilever Beam (DCB)) were carried out in accordance with ASTM standards to evaluate mechanical performance of the composites. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observations were made on the specimens to evaluate microstructural features. It was observed that the carbon fabrics were successfully coated with a thin layer of PVA nanofibres by electrospinning technique. The results showed that P VA nanofibres improve the mechanical properties of unidirectional carbon/epoxy composite laminates when subjected to in-plane loading. On the other hand, PVA nanofibres slightly reduced the mode-I fracture toughness values although they led to more stable crack propagation.Article Citation - WoS: 24Citation - Scopus: 29Hydrophobic Coatings From Photochemically Prepared Hydrophilic Polymethacrylates Via Electrospraying(John Wiley and Sons Inc., 2017) Işık, Tuğba; Demir, Mustafa Muammer; Aydoğan, Cansu; Çiftçi, Mustafa; Yağcı, YusufLinear poly(hydroxyethyl methacrylate-co-methyl methacrylate) P(HEMA-co-MMA) and poly(dimehylaminoethyl methacrylate-co-methyl methacrylate) P(DMAEMA-co-MMA) and their corresponding hyperbranched copolymers were synthesized by conventional photoinitiated free radical polymerization and self-condensing vinyl polymerization (SCVP) using Type I and Type II photoinitiators, respectively. Then, the polymers were processed by electrospraying in N, N-dimethylformamide. The surface of the resulting electrospray coatings was examined by SEM, XPS, and WCA then compared with those prepared by drop casting. Regardless of the structural nature of the polymers, electrospraying allows the preparation of rough surface that shows more hydrophobic behavior. Electrospray coatings with linear and hyperbranched copolymers exhibited WCA as ∼150° and ∼130°, respectively, indicating that branching reduces the WCA.Conference Object Üç Boyutlu Hücre Kültürü için Polimer Esaslı Ekstrasellüler Matriks Mimetiği(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2017) Türker, Esra; Yıldız, Ümit Hakan; Arslan Yıldız, AhuElektro-eğirme metodu gelişmiş üretim teknolojilerindendir ve biyomedikal uygulamalarında yaygın olarak kullanılmaktadır.
