Article Eğitim yapılarında asansör trafik analizi yöntemlerinin karşılaştırılmasına yönelik bir araştırma(Gazi Üniversitesi, 2023) Deligöz, Dostcan; Harputlugil, TimuçinPurpose: Regarding elevator design in educational buildings; It is aimed to investigate the legal framework, to integrate dynamic simulation programs to design process, to compare traditional and dynamic simulation methods, to evaluate the adequacy of elevator features specified in the legislation and to determine the optimum scenarios according to the minimum requirements.Theory and Methods: Based on the findings of the literature review, which examines the issue of elevator traffic analysis together with the legislation and regulations, the carrying capacities of the elevators in the educational buildings designed by the Ministry of National Education (MNE) are tested. The stability of the system is tested by analyzing the conditions where only the disabled, disabled and building workers can be used together and all building users can use the elevators with the dynamic simulation method (with Elevate Software). The limits of the system are determined based on the waiting times during the peak usage periods. The findings of the study are evaluated according to the waiting times determined by CIBSE Guide D and the Chamber of Mechanical Engineers followed by the discussion of the outcomes. Results: The issue of elevator design has been overlooked in educational buildings, and a comprehensive elevator traffic analysis method has not been defined. For the effective use of all occupants, elevator design should be handled comprehensively with considering potentials of dynamic simulation method. Conclusion: According to the findings of the study, it is noted that the number and capacity of elevators in the legislation for educational buildings are determined only for minimum conditions and for disabled users. In addition, the legislation (considering calculation methodology) is not specific for educational buildings but related with buildings in general with public use. Considering the occupants, and their profiles of the educational buildings, a more comprehensive traffic analysis with the dynamic simulation method may enable the elevators to be designed and to be used more efficiently.Article Geleneksel Konutlarda Günışığı Aydınlığının Değerlendirilmesi: Kula Geleneksel Konutlarında Başoda(Gazi Üniversitesi, 2023) Battal, Cansu; Kazanasmaz, Zehra Tuğçe; İpekoğlu, BaşakDaylighting is one of the main factors among the features that determine the original space qualities in traditional houses. Illuminating the space with daylight also determines its ambience. Daylighting criteria should be considered among the features to be preserved in the usage decisions. In traditional dwellings in Anatolia, the main room is the most lavish room, which has projections and is surrounded by windows on three sides. Therefore, in the buildings which are conserved for reuse, the main room should maintain its original daylighting features. The aim of this study is to draw attention to the maintenance of daylighting features in the restoration decisions of traditional dwellings. Within the scope of the study, daylight performance of the main rooms of Kaçiklar and Zabunlar Houses selected in Kula, Manisa was evaluated. The daylight illuminance of the main rooms was measured during the four seasons; by calculating the ratio of the window area to the floor and wall areas, reflectance of surface materials and normal-normal transmittance of window glass were calculated. Results showed that daylight illuminance of the main room in Kaçiklar House was not sufficient for all four seasons, while it was in Zabunlar House. As a result, while the restoration decisions are developed, opening the closed window in the main room of Kaçiklar House, cleaning the paint on the top windows and and selecting a light-coloured wall finishing material will increase the reflectance value and will positively affect the daylight illuminance; in Zabunlar House, on the other hand, removing the existing wooden glazing in the sofa in order to increase the daylight provided through the sofa and increasing the reflectance value by choosing a light-coloured wall finishing material will increase the daylight illuminance of the main room.Article Citation - Scopus: 2Indoor Air Co2 Concentrations and Ventilation Rates in Two Residences in İzmir, Turkey(Yıldız Teknik Üniversitesi, 2022) Taşer, Aybüke; Uçaryılmaz, Sedef; Çataroğlu, Ilgın; Sofuoğlu, Sait CemilHouses are the places where people spend most of their time. That is why indoor air quality at home is essential for public health. Sufficient ventilation is the factor to avoid accumulation of pollutants in indoor air, which include microorganisms, such as SARS-CoV-2. Therefore, adequate ventilation is needed to provide good indoor air quality for human health and reduce infection risk at home. There are no reports of residential ventilation rates in Turkey. In this study, CO2 concentrations were measured in two residences in Izmir, Turkey. Three experiments were conducted to determine background concentrations and the rate of natural ventilation with infiltration and opening windows. Results show that air exchange provided by infiltration is low for both case rooms, while adequate ventilation could be achieved with natural ventilation under the studied conditions. Infiltration provided air exchange and ventilation rates of 0.18 h-1 and 5.9 m3/h for Case 1 and 0.29 h-1 and 8.23 m3/h for Case 2, respectively. Air exchange and ventilation rates were increased to 2.36 h-1 and 76.9 m3/h for Case 1 and 1.2 h-1 and 34 m3/h for Case 2, respectively, by opening the windows. Although ventilation can be provided by opening the windows, the other factors that determine its rate, e.g., meteorological variables, cannot be controlled by the occupants. Consequently, people cannot ensure the good indoor air quality in bedrooms and sufficient reduction in transmission of pathogenic microorganisms; therefore, risk of spreading diseases such as COVID-19 at home.Article Citation - Scopus: 1Outside the House but Not in the City: Promenades in Istanbul as Negotiated Public Spaces for Women in 19th-Century Ottoman Novels(İstanbul Teknik Üniversitesi, 2021) Çil, Ela; Şenel Fidangenç, Ayşe NurDrawing on from feminist literary theory, this article analyses the first Ottoman novels working within and consolidating the patriarchal discourse published in the rampant modernization period in the second half of 19th century, which is also named the Tanzimat (Reorganization) era of the Ottoman Empire. Having Istanbul as their settings, the discourse of the novels tackle with delineating the limits to the social and cultural transformations, which the novels’ writers perceive to be the direct result of Western influence. The novels have a didactic style aimed for guiding their readers to shield certain values, which they think hold the core of Ottoman identity, from the changes. We argue that the discourse of the novels manifest ambivalence regarding the inevitable presence of women outside the house and negotiate with their readers on the place and practices of publicness. No matter how popular and crowded they had then become, the promenades, were where the male writers aimed to confine women in their outings. At one level, their emphasis on the promenades is related with the conceptualization of nature as a safe space in the context of a modernizing city. And, on the other level, they want to keep Muslim women away from Pera, the Westernized and cosmopolitan district, in Istanbul.Article Historic Collective Shelter as Heritage: the Cases in Hurşidiye, Kurtuluş and Sakarya Neighborhoods in Konak, Izmir(İstanbul Üniversitesi, 2021) Hamamcıoğlu Turan, Mine; Akpınar, Figen; Toköz, Özge DenizHistorical collective shelters, yahuthanes or cortejos, are an alternative form of housing that were developed to provide secure sheltering of the groups who were disadvantaged in terms of economic, social, and cultural aspects in the Ottoman city. They have played a significant role in history as a building type that made possible cohabitation of groups, with moral and material problems, and struggling to maintain their integrity despite hardship. This study deals with a group of historical collective shelters in the traditional commercial center of Izmir dating mainly to the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The objective is to understand the historic evolution of collective shelters (yahuthane, cortejo) in Hursidiye, Kurtulus and Sakarya neighborhoods of Konak district in Izmir, to define their cultural values, to analyze their social and spatial development, to present their physical characteristics and evaluate their preservation problems. Eleven collective shelters were documented in the studied site, which is a portion of the traditional commercial center of Izmir (Kemeralti). The site comprehends the ruins of the Roman Agora and the remains of the public buildings dating to the pre-modernization period of the Ottoman Empire as well as the late Ottoman urban layout. As a method, the preliminary studies were reviewed, the land registers were surveyed, the present base map together with the historical maps were overlapped and the case studies were conducted using conventional techniques of architectural and urban conservation. The study has documented the interaction of Muslim and Jewish communities and how the collective living habits of these ethnic groups living in collective shelters differed from standard residential life at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries in the traditional commercial center of Izmir. Though collective shelters in the historic center of Izmir have been studied in the literature, their specific location on the map was not available. This study has provided locations of the shelters and evaluated the architectural characteristics of their remains. The traces and remains of the historic collective shelters should be preserved as elements contributing to the integrity of the multi layered city.Article Citation - Scopus: 2Mısır, Etrüsk, Roma: Piranesi ve Bir On Sekizinci Yüzyıl Tartışması(Orta Doğu Teknik Üniversitesi, 2008) Ek, Fatma İpek; Şengel, DenizOne crucial debate that resonated in eighteenth-century Europe concerned the origins of European architecture whose effects continue to inform present-day notions of the same. Numerous important eighteenth-century works were produced in the context of emergence of the discipline of architectural history. In this architectural, historical, and archaeological framework, Venetian architect and scholar Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720- 1778) played an important role by his visual and literary works as well as original approach to history. Piranesi developed a history of architecture that was not based on the East/West division and the separation of continents. In opposition to writers like Winckelmann who rooted the origin of Roman architecture in the Greek, he claimed that Roman architecture derived from the Etruscan which found its roots in Egypt. Discussion of roots depended on the eighteenth century on aesthetical theory interpreting Grecian architecture as ‘beautiful’ and Roman -thus Egyptian- as ‘sublime’. It was in this lively intellectual environment that Piranesi searched the origins of Roman -and thus the whole Europeanarchitecture. His works were, however, misinterpreted as being Orientalist by contemporary scholars following Said. Article Citation - Scopus: 7Transformation in a Housing-Design Story: Reading the Spatial Typologies of Apartment Projects in Hatay-Izmir(İstanbul Teknik Üniversitesi, 2018) Yaylalı Yıldız, Berna; Ek, Fatma İpek; Can, IşınThe politics of central government or incentives determine new design-systems of housing plots as well as housing units. Especially after the enactment of the law of urban regeneration for risky areas, regeneration of areas under disaster risk, there has been an acceleration in knocking down old buildings and constructing new ones in inner cities. Thus, this paper focuses on the changes in housing typologies in Hatay-Izmir, in terms of space syntax parameters through the time period 1960-2000, and interprets the final plan-solutions within the perspective of urban regeneration. By accelerating implementations of the urban transformation projects in Hatay region, alternative plan-typologies coming from the past have undergone the so-called “re-design and transformation” process; however, they have actually been substituted by the “never-changing” plan-templates of the apartment typology. We will examine these changes in plan typologies and spatial organisations of the mentioned apartment-projects on the same plots by utilizing the method of space syntax and visibility analysis (VGA). Transformations in spatial configuration in two periods are interpreted through their relationships to shifts in meaning of privacy and daily life represented by degree of permeability and connectivity of housing-unit-plans based on spatial analysis. © 2018, Istanbul Teknik Universitesi, Faculty of Architecture.
