    Microarc: Event Driven Analysis and Design Method for Microservices

    The rapid development of the Internet infrastructure has enabled software applications to leverage almost unlimited and scalable resources. Microservice-based architecture has emerged as a solution to harness the benefits of a distributed cloud-based infrastructure. Event-driven architecture is a powerful approach for addressing challenges in distributed systems, such as scalability, distributed data, and sharing of data at scale. In an event-driven microservice architecture, decoupled services interact by responding to events and event streams facilitate data sharing between them. Despite these advantages, there is no de facto method for the analysis and design of systems within microservice architecture. Organizations often face difficulties in developing microservice-based systems, owing to the lack of well-defined methodologies for analysis and design. In this study, we present an analysis and design method for microservice-based systems. MicroArc is a method for analyzing and designing microservice-based systems, and comprises modeling notations, guiding processes to articulate how the method is applied, and a supporting tool for modelling. The MicroArc approach enables the identification of events and microservice candidates by modeling the flow of processes in the early phase of development. © 2025 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.

    Çatalhöyük as an Open Site? On the Openness of Virtual Reconstructions of Archaeological Sites to a Multiplicity of Interpretations

    In this chapter, a framework for assessing the openness of virtual archaeological reconstructions to a multiplicity of readings is presented by focusing on the case of Çatalhöyük, in Turkey. Since its discovery in the 1950s, there has been a diversity of opinion on Çatalhöyük’s settlement rank along the path from settled village to urban agglomeration. This diversity of opinion has been expressed both verbally and visually, the latter including numerous computer-based visualizations for a variety of purposes and target audiences. Among the internationally approved principles for computer-based visualizations of cultural heritage is the need for intellectual and scientific transparency. Umberto Eco’s theory of the “open work,” as applied in literary and visual works including motion pictures, offers a theoretical framework for discussing the transparency of Çatalhöyük visualizations, as does Siegfried Kracauer’s idea of “cinematic materiality.” Three of the virtual works on Çatalhöyük are briefly presented in this chapter, as a basis for discussing the applicability of Eco’s and Kracauer’s ideas in this type of production as a measure for “open multivocality,” leading to an assessment of whether visualizations reveal any or all alternative interpretations of the site. © 2025 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.

    Potential of Bacterial Cellulose for Sustainable Cities: a Review and Bibliometric Analysis on Bacterial Cellulose

    This book chapter focuses on bacterial cellulose (BC), with many recent contemporary studies, an explanation of BC producers and synthesis mechanisms, and a summary of their production methods. Few studies are directly related to sustainability with BC, a promising biomaterial for different solutions due to its properties. Thus, a comprehensive review of BC and research trends in this area are evaluated by bibliometric analysis. The distribution of publications by years, influential countries, organizations, journals, authors, citation analysis, distribution of publications by scientific disciplines, keyword analysis, and research focuses are emphasized. Scientific publications were taken from the WoS database, and graphics were created with the “VOSviewer” and “Carrot2” programs. According to the analysis, studies on BC started in 1980, but studies on sustainability were found in 2005 and later. It has also been observed that studies on BC in materials science have increased significantly in 2016 and beyond. Finally, bacterial cellulose has been discussed in line with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. Therefore it can be said that there is a potential for use in the textile, architecture, and food packaging sectors, and more detailed research is still needed. As a result, the dissemination of BC-related studies in these areas has great potential for a completely sustainable production method. © The Editor(s) (if applicable) and The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2023.

    Documentation of a Vernacular House With Close-Range Digital Photogrammetry

    This study aims to present a combined documentation method that can be easily applied on the built vernacular heritage prior to establishment of appropriate conservation methodology and treatment strategy. It takes into consideration the vernacular house type of Alaçati, Izmir, Turkey and defines the appropriate techniques to be used in the conservation aimed analytic recording process. The prismatic house masses at human scale, with plain façade orders and orthogonal plan layouts at this settlement can be recorded fast and accurately with close-range digital photogrammetry. The concepts of mapping should be utilized for the representation of analtic data. Within this frame, a 19th century house located in the urban conservation site of Alaçati is to be presented as the case study. © 2007 International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing.     Classifications for Planimetric Efficiency of Nursing Unit Floors

    Bu çalışma, Türkiye’deki 15 Devlet Hastanesine ait ‘Hasta Bakım Üniteleri’ verilerini kullanarak, mimarlık alanında oldukça yeni olan Bulanık Mantık metodu ile verimlilik tahmini yapmakta; bu çerçevede bulanık mantık algoritması geliştirerek, Türkiye’de örnek olarak seçilen kamu hastanelerinin plan (planimetric) tasarım verimliliği için sınıflandırmalar geliştirmeye çalışmaktadır. Hasta bakım ve tedavi ünitelerinin kat planlarından hasta kullanım alanları ve dolaşım alanları elde edilerek bulanık mantık modeli alt kümeleri için üyelik fonksiyonları oluşturulmuştur. ‘Mamdanni’ kural sistemi, kuralların ağırlıklarını hesaplamada ‘min’ fonksiyonu, ve ‘max’ kompozisyonu ve ‘centroid’ metodu da bulanık işlemcisi için kullanılmıştır. Girdi değişkenleri olarak hasta kullanım alanları ve dolaşım alanları modellenmiştir. Girdi değişkenleri ile çıktı değişkeni olan tasarım verimliliği arasındaki ilişkiler bulanık mantık kuralları ile ortaya çıkarılmıştır. Varolan hasta bakım ünitelerini incelemek için, verimlilik çıktı değerleri modelden elde edilmiştir. Genel tasarım normları, tasarım ölçütleri ve önceki çalışmalar ışığında ve de bu model aracılığıyla verimlilik sınıfları oluşturulmuştur. Modelde test edilen 15 hastane kat planından altısının düşük verimli sınıf içinde, dokuzunun ise orta verimli sınıf içinde olduğu görülmüştür. Hiçbiri güncel standartlara ve gereksinimlere uygun değildir. Bu çalışmada elde edilen modelin faydası, verimlilik sınıflarının sınır değerlerini belirleme yeteneğinde olmasıdır. Hastanelerin karşılaştırılarak incelenmesi için oluşturulan verimlilik sınıflandırılması başarı ile sonuçlanmıştır. Hastane tasarımcıları ve yöneticileri, mevcut hastanelerin değerlendirmesini ve karşılaştırmaları yapabilmek için bu çalışmadan geribildirim yoluyla bilgi edinebilir. Sonuç olarak, ilgili binalar hakkında karar verme aşmasında(örneğin binanın iyileştirme ihtiyacının olup olmadığı, yeni mekanlara gerek duyulup duyulmadığı gibi) bu modelden faydalanabilirler.

    Çevre Psikolojisi Kavramlarıyla Bir Filmin Analizi: Thx 1138

    There is a space-based interaction between environmental psychology, architecture and cinema. In order to exemplify this interaction, the basic concepts of environmental psychology are utilized in the study of a dystopian science fiction film THX 1138 (Lucas, 1971). It is observed that the reinterpretation of the basic concepts of environmental psychology strengthened the dystopic fiction of the film, THX 1138 as a case. From this point of view, the interaction among environmental psychology, architecture and cinema are explained by following a deductive methodology. In the content of this study, firstly the interaction among environmental psychology, architecture and cinema is discussed before analyzing the spaces of the film. This analysis has shown that some of the basic concepts of environmental psychology are reinterpreted through the spaces of the film. The reinterpretations are as follows: 'place attachment', 'place identity', 'privacy', 'spatial perception' and 'territoriality'. Especially among these concepts, the concept of 'privacy' is found to be important to strengthen the dystopic fiction of the film. It is also observed that, this characteristic of the film is founded on the loss of the fundamental rights and freedoms due to normalization of the absence of privacy by the society. With its emphasis on the interaction among environmental psychology, architecture and cinema this paper sets out to clarify this interaction by spatial readings made from the selected film.

    Evaluation of Architectural Characteristics for Conservation Decisions of Degirmendagi, Izmir, Turkey

    Historical settlements, which are integral parts of the cultural heritage, should be documented and evaluated with their local characteristics. The aim of this study is to document, analyze and evaluate the architectural, environmental and social characteristics of an urban settlement called Deǧirmendaǧı District, which has a historical background beginning with the Roman period to the present, in the center of metropolitan city of İzmir, on the Aegean coast of Turkey. The settlement is one of the earliest that was planned by local administration in İzmir and contributes to the İzmir silhouette with its location on a steep hillside in the township of Konak. Documentation methods used are sketches, photography and architectural and social questionnaires. Inventory cards were prepared to collect architectural characteristics of each building and the social questionnaires were comprised of socio-economic characteristics of the settlers. Data gathered at the site was analyzed and evaluated to develop a conservation approach, including historical review of the ancient era. Since the area is easily accessible and close to city center, the area becomes attractive. It has the advantage of the vista based on its inclined topography and grid-planned scheme. Deǧirmendaǧı District is a special area requiring special conservation within the city of İzmir. However, historical pattern has changed through the years because of changing lifestyle. The area, which is one of the most important and valuable districts in İzmir considering its history, location, and architectural characteristics should be integrated with the city and citizens. This study documents the present potentials and values of the area and forms a basis to prepare conservation approaches.
