Characteristics of Courtyards of Traditional Houses in Kurtgazi, Birgi
    (01. Izmir Institute of Technology, 2024) Keleş, Sena; Turan, Mine

    (01. Izmir Institute of Technology, 2023) Ercan Gündüz, Yasemin; Turan, Mine; Aktaş, Engin
The aim of this study is to document the construction techniques, material usage, and structural failures of the traditional houses in a village of Mardin, Eryeri, in order to guide a conservation aimed development plan that will be prepared in the future and enhance the related rehabilitation implementations. Eight houses that have preserved their authenticity were selected. Field survey focusing on the structural elements such as foundations, walls, floors, and roofs was conducted with the conventional techniques of architectural restoration. Both failures and also alterations of the buildings were documented. The changes and alterations of the houses are documented. Visual analysis of the constructional qualities was made with Archicad23 tools. Comparison with the traditional houses in the vicinity was made with reference to data gathered via field survey, literature review and archive research. As a result, the traditional houses are integrated with the rocky terrain of the region and in masonry system. There is an intense use of local stone, Yellow Limestone. Vaults are common superstructure elements, but timber floor is also possible. The walls are stone masonry in all. The common structural problems are demolition of structural elements such as roofs. The causes of severe failures are neglect and natural aging. The reinforced concrete additions flanking to the authentic structures also cause failure. Within the scope of the conservation plan, it is important to prevent reinforced concrete annexes and to intervene the annexes that cause excessive loads urgently.

Seismic Vulnerability Assessment of Bergama Bedesten
(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2022) Demir, Hatice Ayşegül; Turan, Mine; Aktaş, Engin
This study aims to document Bergama Bedesten with emphasis on its construction technique and material usage; and assess its structural condition for future seismic action through numerical analysis. The monument (15th -16th century) is unique among the historical trade buildings at the center of Bergama, İzmir. It is revealed that the structure is a rare example by the use of plane triangles as transition elements, the oculi placement in domes, and the thickening application at parts where load-bearing arches integrate into the walls and at the corners. In order to investigate the vulnerability of the building, numerical analysis using the finite element method was conducted in ANSYS software. According to the Turkey Building Earthquake Code (2018), single-mode equivalent earthquake analysis considering the horizontal elastic design spectrum of the site was carried out for x and y directions, separately. The maximum principal stress concentration locations obtained through analyses point vulnerable zones. These were specifically observed on load-bearing arches, on some plane triangles, on the transition zones, at dome parts close to the transition zone and peak level, at the parts where arches integrate to the walls, around top windows, on the west entrance door arch, and on a secondary door arch in the north wall. The method comparing the structural failure mapping and visual structural alterations analysis of architectural restoration with finite element model results, emphasizes that some damaged or altered portions in the current state are in seismically vulnerable spots. Some precautions, further studies and interventions were suggested for these locations.

Restoration and Presentation of Byzantine Defense Structures in Cilicia
    (01. Izmir Institute of Technology, 2021) Kenar, Aylin; Turan, Mine
The aim of this study is to evaluate current restorations and presentations of Byzantine defense structures in terms of sustaining and enhancement of the cultural heritage values and their success in solving conservation problems. So, better management of future interventions may be possible. Case study approach was undertaken: Three castle ruins in Cilicia, Turkey were focused on: Yılan and Feke castles and Kızkalesi in Korykos. The cases are located in the present-day rural areas. They are restored recently. The study consists of literature review, site survey, documentation and analysis of geographic characteristics, historic background, morphologic characteristics, construction technique and material usage and conservation activities of the case studies, identification of the cultural heritage values and conservation problems before and after interventions at the landscape, site and building scales; and discussion of the effects of the interventions on values and problems in comparison with case studies from abroad. As a result, it was determined that interventions were either unsystematic or implemented more than necessary. There is lack of a holistic approach for interventions. While some portions were intervened, others were left in-situ without any interventions. There is a tendency for reconstruction and reintegration in general. It was seen that current interventions either sustain already accumulated cultural heritage values or they have negative impact on them. Consequently, enhancement of values is not observed. Meanwhile, some of the conservation problems were ignored.

(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2019) Keke, Damla Gül Begüm; Turan, Mine; Akpınar, Figen
Cultural routes help perceiving the heritage elements in a historic urban site as a whole and transform their display into an enjoyable experience. Manisa historic center is chosen as the study area. The site has housed many civilizations throughout history and had been an important trade center on the historic silk road, but it has lost its integrity with the fire of 1922 followed by modern urbanization on the historic site. It is aimed to search the ways of presenting the isolated cultural and natural assets of the historic center through establishment of a cultural route. The way followed includes literature review, site survey, analysis, evaluation, proposal development and discussion. Features of examples and Manisa cultural route, such as route type, length, form and assets, discussed by comparison. As a result, a common vision for the cultural route of Manisa center with four different sub-themes is determined as “On the Trail of the Silk Road, the Cultural Network of Manisa.” The cultural route will revive the spirit of the caravan route, the experiences of the old travelers, and the traditional way of life. Linear formed, short length stages are suggested. Awareness of heritage protection can be improved by increasing the visibility of the assets along the route stages. It is expected that tourism activity in the region will increase. Proposing local-scale cultural routes in Manisa will pave the way for Manisa to participate in larger cultural route networks by conducting regional-scale route studies.

Structural Analyses and Assessment of Historical Çardak Caravanserai in Denizli
(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2019) Şahin, Esra; Aktaş, Engin; Turan, Mine
The assessment of historical masonry structures are significant in terms of transferring our cultural heritage to future generations. The conservation of these masonry structures is possible through investigating problems and their causes with tools such as structural modeling and analyses. In this study, the structural modeling and analyses of a historical masonry structure was aimed. Çardak caravanserai in Denizli was chosen as the case study since it has preserved its authenticity and integrity. In this scope, the software used for modeling and structural analyses was SAP2000 v20.2 commercial finite element software. For modeling, frame elements were used in the columns and shell elements were used in the other structural elements. Selfweight analysis, modal analysis and response spectrum analysis were conducted in terms of the assessment. The self-weight analysis was made under dead load. The analysis indicated the current state of the structure. In modal analysis, free vibration periods, mode shapes and mass participation ratios of the structure were determined. In response spectrum analysis, according to Turkish Siesmic Design Code 2018, mode integration method was used as linear calculation method. In this analysis, the khan was evaluated under the dead load and earthquake loads in the x and y directions. The structural elements that exceed the compressive, tensile and shear strength were identified as hot spots and recommendations on the further investigations on these critical points of the structure were presented.

Historical Development of Göztepe District in Izmir and Preservation Problems of Its Monuments
(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2019) Düzcan, İpek; Turan, Mine
Göztepe has transformed significantly with the loss of its suburban landscape and historic context of the late 19th century and early 20th century. The transformation of the historical context of the district started during the mid 20th century, when urbanization had caused the invasion of the district with high apartment buildings. The historical value of the site arises from its remaining assets. The study aims to present the historical development of Göztepe and its current preservation problems with an eye on its monuments: Arapyan Ispartalyan House, Susuz Dede Park, Notre Dame de Lourdes Church and Anadolu Apartment Building. The way followed is literature review, site survey, historical and archive research, comparative study, evaluation and discussion. The present historical monuments of Göztepe district had been built at the beginning of the 20th century, except the site of Susuz Dede Park, which originates in Hellenistic period (4th century BC). The types of the studied monuments vary according to their function as one educational, two religious or one residential type; and also, according to their quality as three cultural, and one mixed (cultural and natural). The recognition of the values of the district depends on the sustaining of these assets. It is concluded that the present state of Göztepe district is not successful as a representative of its historical characteristics; rather it indicates an insufficient long-term planning of urban development and conservation-oriented zoning. For the sustainable development of the district, a harmonious balance between the new and the old should be ensured. Preservation of the assets will contribute to presenting a much more valuable whole. A holistic approach is necessary in this manner for revealing the hidden values.
