Cevher Pasa Bath, which is located in Tabae archaeological site in Denizli, Turkey and dated to the 15th century, presents structural problems. The aim of the study is to propose a framework for planning consolidation of the ruins of Cevher Pasa Bath so that conservation work regarding similar masonry ruins in archaeological sites can be guided. Thus, methods of architectural restoration and civil engineering are combined in an interdisciplinary scope. Provision of temporary shoring as an emergency intervention, consolidation and presentation of the ruin within the scope of an interdisciplinary restoration project, and monitoring of the asset within the frame of a monument management plan are suggested, respectively. Structural analysis considering stress and overturning moment checks are performed. Consolidation work includes only supporting of arch remains. Some walls of the ruin are weaker than other parts. These parts need further detailed analysis, and if necessary, further consolidation and strengthening are to be carried out. The monument management plan points out the necessity of collaboration of local and central administrations, and also non-governmental organisations.Article Citation - WoS: 3Citation - Scopus: 3Feasible Packing of Granular Materials in Discrete-Element Modelling of Cone-Penetration Testing(Taylor and Francis Ltd., 2018) Ecemiş, Nurhan; Bakunowicz, PaulinaThis paper explores how the discrete-element method (DEM) was found to play an increasingly important role in cone penetration test (CPT) where continuum-mechanics-based analysis tools are insufficient. We investigated several crucial features of CPT simulations in the two-dimensional DEM. First, the microparameters (stiffness and friction) of discrete material tailored to mimic clean, saturated sand, which is used in cone-penetration tests, were calibrated by curve-fitting drained triaxial tests. Then, three series of cone-penetration simulations were conducted to explore (1) top boundary conditions, (2) reasonable size of discrete particles at different initial porosities, and (3) limit initial porosity of the model for a balance between accurate representation and computational efficiency. Further, we compared the cone-penetration resistance obtained in the laboratory and numerical simulations for the range of relative densities.Article Citation - WoS: 27Citation - Scopus: 31Statistical Analysis of Causes of Death (2005-2010) in Villages of Simav Plain, Turkey, With High Arsenic Levels in Drinking Water Supplie(Taylor and Francis Ltd., 2015) Gündüz, Orhan; Bakar, Coşkun; Şimşek, Celalettin; Baba, Alper; Elçi, Alper; Gürleyük, Hakan; Mutlu, Merdiye; Çakır, AyşeThe purpose of this research was to compare the causes of death in 5 villages situated in Simav Plain, Turkey, during 2005-2010 where different arsenic levels were detected in drinking water supplies. Since groundwater in Simav Plain had arsenic concentrations that ranged between 7.1 and 833.9 ppb, a two-phase research was formulated. In the first phase, public health surveys were conducted with 1,003 villagers to determine the distribution of diseases. In the second phase, verbal autopsy surveys and official death records were used to investigate the causes of death. In total, 402 death cases were found in the study area where cardiovascular system diseases (44%) and cancers (15.2%) were major causes. Cancers of lung (44.3%), prostate (9.8%), colon (9.8%), and stomach (8.2%) were comparably higher in villages with high arsenic levels in drinking water supplies. Furthermore, the majority of cases of liver, bladder, and stomach cancers were observed in villages with high arsenic levels. © 2015 Taylor and Francis Group, LLC.Article Citation - WoS: 4Citation - Scopus: 4Effect of Infill Walls on the Drift Behavior of Reinforced Concrete Frames Subjected To Lateral-Load Reversals(Taylor and Francis Ltd., 2013) Dönmez, Cemalettin; Çankaya, Mehmet AlperFour-story, single-bay, 1/5 scaled reinforced concrete frames were tested with and without infill walls. Frames were subjected to pseudo-static cyclic loading. In addition, impact hammer measurements were made to obtain the natural frequencies and modal shapes at certain drift levels. It was observed that infill walls cause major changes on both the stiffness and the drift behavior of the frames. Effect of observed changes can be either advantageous or disadvantageous depending on failure mode. Results showed that the distribution of drift that is based on the mode shapes has higher local concentrations than the distribution observed under forced static conditions.Article Citation - WoS: 36Citation - Scopus: 38Simulation of Seismic Liquefaction: 1-G Model Testing System and Shaking Table Tests(Taylor and Francis Ltd., 2013) Ecemiş, NurhanIn this paper, we focus on the development and performance of the 1-g model testing system to monitor the liquefaction occurrence of saturated soils, under subsequent one-dimensional shake table tests. The system is composed of one-dimensional laminar box, cone penetration system, soil model, system for hydraulic soil pumping to achieve loose soil deposit, instrumentation and associated testing hardware. In order to simulate the free-field conditions in the laboratory, the laminates slide on each other using rollers placed between each laminate. The static calibration test results demonstrate that the friction effects between the laminates and the rollers are satisfactorily low. The loosest and the most liquefiable sand deposit is prepared inside the laminar box by hydraulic filling process and subjected to four subsequent shaking tests at different intensities. First, the laminar box and shake table performance is verified by using time-histories of acceleration and displacement test results. Then, the measured data inside the soil and on the laminates are compared with the numerical model. The previously calibrated numerical model UBCSAND which shows the seismic loading conditions in the free field is used in the simulations. Those shake table test results and the numerical simulations of the box and the soil indicate that the usefulness of the laminar box system for shaking table tests is satisfactory for dynamic model tests in 1-g gravity.Article Citation - WoS: 28Citation - Scopus: 30Hydrochemical and Isotopic Composition of Tuzla Geothermal Field (canakkale-Turkey) and Its Environmental Impacts(Taylor and Francis Ltd., 2009) Baba, Alper; Yüce, Galip; Deniz, Ozan; Yasin, DidemTuzla is an active geothermal area located in northwestern Turkey, 80 km south of the city of Canakkale and 5 km from the Aegean Coast. Geothermal brine, deriving from this area, contains an abundance of NaCl and a water temperature of 173°C (T1 well at 814 m depth) is typically encountered. The aim of this study was to determine the hydrogeochemical properties of the geothermal brine using both chemical and isotopic data, and to investigate the origin of the geothermal brine in the Tuzla area and the environmental impacts of Tuzla Geothermal Field (TGF). Both geothermal brine and shallow groundwater in the area are of meteoric origin. Isotope results indicate that the hot saline waters (brine) in the Tuzla geothermal field originate from connate water along faults. As the saline water rises to the surface, it mixes with shallow groundwaters in various ratios. In addition, the high sodium (Na) and chloride (Cl) content in the Tuzla Stream, fed from the Tuzla geothermal brine during the dry season, cause an increase in sodium and chloride concentrations in the shallow groundwaters by infiltration into the aquifer. Moreover, salt accumulation on the surface is observed due to the uncontrolled artesian flow of geothermal brine, which adversely affects the salinity of shallow groundwater.Article Citation - WoS: 19Citation - Scopus: 19Using Numerical Models and Acoustic Methods To Predict Reservoir Sedimentation(Taylor and Francis Ltd., 2009) Elçi, Şebnem; Bor, Aslı; Çalışkan, AnılThis study draws on drainage basin hydrography, numerical modeling and geographic information system (GIS) techniques in concert with dual frequency echo sounder data to estimate sediment thickness when initial surveys are unavailable or inaccurate. Tahtali Reservoir (Turkey), which provides 40% of water supply to the city of Izmir, was selected as the study site. Deposition patterns within the whole lake were estimated with a 3-D hydrodynamic and sediment transport model applied to Tahtali Reservoir. The numerical model simulated lake response to wind forcing and inflows and/or outflows and was used to describe sediment deposition patterns resulting from the erosion of soils quantified by the implementation of Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) to the whole watershed. Surveying of the lake via dual frequency (28/200 kHz) echo sounder system revealed the current bathymetry, and sediment thickness was estimated from the difference of depths measured by the dual frequency sounder along surveyed transects. These results were compared to the modeled sedimentation thicknesses and to preliminary estimates of watershed sediment yield estimated by USLE. The present study aims to assess the influence of geothermal fluid on groundwater by determining the hydrogeochemical properties of the water resources. A sampling program was conducted for 10 months and samples were collected from geothermal and groundwater wells including re-injected fluid. Trace and major elements, and the types of waters were determined. The results of groundwater analysis showed that the concentrations of some toxic species, such as arsenic, boron, and fluoride, exceeded the limits of drinking water standards set by TSE, EPA, and WHO.Article Citation - WoS: 5Citation - Scopus: 8Forecasting Interregional Commodity Flows Using Artificial Neural Networks: an Evaluation(Taylor and Francis Ltd., 2004) Çelik, Hüseyin MuratPrevious studies have concluded that the use of artificial neural networks (ANNs) is a promising new technique for modelling freight distribution, supporting, the findings of other studies in the area of spatial interaction modelling. However, the forecasting performance of ANNs is still under investigation. This study tests the predictive performance of the ANN Model with respect to a Box-Cox spatial interaction model. It is concluded that the Box-Cox model outperforms ANN in forecasting interregional commodity flows even if ANN had proven calibration superiority in comparison to conventional gravity type models.Conference Object Citation - WoS: 1Citation - Scopus: 6Genetic Algorithm-Artificial Neural Network Model for the Prediction of Germanium Recovery From Zinc Plant Residues(Taylor and Francis Ltd., 2002) Akkurt, Sedat; Özdemir, Serhan; Tayfur, GökmenA multi-layer, feed-forward, back-propagation learning algorithm was used as an artificial neural network (ANN) tool to predict the extraction of germanium from zinc plant residues by sulphuric acid leaching. A genetic algorithm (GA) was used for the selection of training and testing data and a GA-ANN model of the germanium leaching system was created on the basis of the training data. Testing of the model yielded good error levels (r2 = 0.95). The model was employed to predict the response of the system to different values of the factors that affect the recovery of germanium and the results facilitate selection of the experimental conditions in which the optimum recovery will be achieved.
