Department Faculty 04. Faculty of ScienceIZTECH Faculty of Science offered its first degree program in 1998 with graduate programs in Chemistry and Physics. With Mathematics and Biology graduate programs in 2001 and 2003, respectively, the Faculty of Science proceeded its education with graduate programs in four basic science disciplines. In 1998, our faculty offered its first undergraduate programs in Chemistry and Physics. In 2004, Molecular Biology and Genetics, in 2010 Mathematics Department commenced education in undergraduate programs. The undergraduate and graduate programs, which were initially conducted at the Basmane Faculty Building, moved to Science A-B-C Buildings upon the construction of the Urla campus. In 2004, the construction of the Science Classroom buildings was completed and the theoretical courses were moved to these classrooms while practical courses resumed at the Science Buildings B and C. The Physics departmental building was erected in 2007 while the Mathematics and Molecular Biology and Genetics departmental buildings in 2011 and 2013, respectively. Consequently, the number of students has reached the currect capacity by growing parallel to the increase in the number of departmental classrooms and laboratories. Our faculty, which has improved the quality and quantity of its educational activities through this qualitative growth, continues to grow and develop rapidly. Department of PhotonicsPhotonics is the science and engineering of light that generate, utilize, detect and manipulate photons, quanta of light, in various media as well as modification its properties like its color. Photonics is a multidisciplinary field of science and technology and it is already defined as the key enabling technology by European Union and innovative area for future by the United States. It is regarded that the 21thcentury will be the century of the photon much as the 20thcentury was the century of electron. The Department offers a Master of Science (MSc) program in Photonics Science and Engineering. Due to its nature, photonics is always in touch with physics, chemistry, materials science, electrical & electronics engineering. The graduates of the program would find positions in variety of industrial sectors such as healthcare, defense, energy, lighting and communications, as well as research institutes and universities. One of the main objectives of Department of Photonics is to train individuals as qualified human resource for photonics industry, in addition to provide skilled-full researchers who could conduct scientific research. The graduates of the Department who should be considered professionals will have analytical thinking, be able to work in multidisciplinary projects as a team player, be able to evolve and transform their skills depending on job requirements, can follow scientific and technological advances in the field, taking responsibilities and having good communication skills. In addition to these, graduates are expected to have decision-making ability to define technical challenges and finding solutions during their education and in their professional life. Department of ChemistryIZTECH Chemistry Department, as one of the first departments established at the Institute started undergraduate and graduate education and research activities at the İzmir city center in 1998. The Department has been continuing education and research activities at the campus in Gülbahçe Village (Urla) since 1999. The Department offers bachelor of science (BSc), master of science (MSc) and doctor of philosophy (PhD) degrees. A total of 54 compulsory and elective courses (130 credits) must be successfully completed for graduation from the undergraduate program. The Department offers also minor and double major degrees for the successful students from other departments. IZTECH Chemistry Department has sub-disciplines of chemistry as Analytical, Bio-, Physical, Inorganic, and Organic. Chemistry is a central science; therefore, the Department has collaborations with other science and engineering disciplines. MSc students must be successful from about 7 courses (21 credits) and finish a thesis in one of the sub-disciplines for graduation. All the research activities are carried out in departmental laboratories equipped with modern instruments and in the research centers at İZTECH. PhD program is arranged based on the student’s previous degree (MSc or bachelor’s level). PhD degree is given to the students who complete the courses, the proficiency exam, and a thesis in one of the sub-disciplines successfully. İYTE Kimya Bölümü; lisans (BSc), yüksek lisans (MSc) ve doktora (PhD) programları aracılığıyla eğitim ve araştırma olanakları sunmaktadır. Lisans programında, Kimyanın alt disiplinlerinde zorunlu ve seçmeli olmak üzere 54 adet ders (130 kredi) vardır ve tamamında başarılı olunması halinde mezuniyet hakkı kazanılır. Kimya Bölümü, ayrıca, kimyaya ilgi duyan diğer bölüm öğrencilerine yandal ve çift anadal eğitim olanakları da sunmaktadır. İYTE Kimya Bölümü; Analitik Kimya, Biyokimya, Fizikokimya, Anorganik Kimya ve Organik Kimya gibi alt disiplinleri bünyesinde barındırmaktadır. Kimyanın merkezi bir bilim dalı olması nedeniyle, diğer temel bilimler ve mühendislik disiplinleri ile ortak araştırmalar yapılmaktadır. Yüksek lisans programında toplam 21 kredi karşılığı ders vardır. Derslerden başarılı olunması ve seçilen konuda tezin tamamlanması halinde yüksek lisans diploması verilir. Yüksek lisans ve doktora süresince araştırmalar, Bölümdeki gelişmiş araştırma laboratuvarları ve İYTE’deki merkez laboratuvarlarında gerçekleştirilir. Department of MathematicsThe graduate program of Mathematics Department intends to raise the knowledge of students to the level in which they can contribute to research and education in mathematics. The Graduate program consists of three sub programs; MSc in Mathematics, MSc in Mathematics (Taught course), Ph.D. in Mathematics. Students can choose to study and research in Algebra, Mathematical Control Theory, Cryptography, Harmonic Analysis, Hydrodynamics and Fluid Mechanics, Mathematical physics, Numerical Analysis, Operator Theory, and Partial Differential Equations. The education given in this program is intended to qualify scientists as those who can pursue academic studies in theoretical and practical mathematics. Our graduates, as well as academic institutions, can find jobs in institutions of higher education and research. Department of Molecular Biology and GeneticsThe Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics (MBG) was established in 1998 as one of the four departments of the School of Science at İzmir Institute of Technology. The mission of MBG is (1) to conduct life sciences research with focus on the molecular and genetic details of critical life events such as metabolism, mutation, transformation, immunity, development, aging, and disease; (2) to offer the best possible education and practical training in molecular and genetic aspects of life sciences. MBG offers both undergraduate (BSc) and graduate (MSc & PhD) programs. A variety of courses are offered at both levels by MBG faculty and supporting faculty from other departments in order to cover a broad area of specialties related to molecular biology and genetics. Cutting edge research activities are central to graduate education and also considered as an indispensable part of educational activities at undergraduate level. Research opportunities exist in a variety of areas including plant genetics, animal genetics, cancer biology, immunology, bioinformatics, biochemistry, structural biology, microbiology, biotechnology, and developmental biology. The diverse areas of research are not conducted independently; there is a great synergy between closely and distantly related areas opening new research and study opportunities for students and faculty. MBG leads the Institute in the number of extramurally funded projects and the total amount of research funding. Currently, MBG faculty members receive over 20 research grants from TÜBİTAK (Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey), five from international agencies such as European COST (Cooperation in Science and Technology), and ten from various ministries of the government. Faculty members also attract funding from agricultural and pharmaceutical industries. In the last few years, MBG faculty members have won over ten international and national research awards from organizations such as Turkish Academy of Sciences (TÜBA) and World Economic Forum, and Installation Grants from European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) and European Commission in recognition of successful research activities and potential. Currently, MBG has 16 faculty members, four specialists, 20 research assistants, and about 40 graduate and 150 undergraduate students. MBG has just moved to its new Turkish lira symbol 8x10px.png20 million building, which houses 25 research laboratories for faculty members (110 m2 each), seven shared laboratories (i.e., hot/cold, dark, and clean rooms), two educational laboratories, six classrooms, an auditorium, office and social interaction areas for faculty and students, and a recently accredited animal facility. MBG is well equipped with research facilities to carry out research in above-mentioned areas. Undergraduate, graduate students and faculty members are encouraged to use these facilities in a collaborative environment. All of the faculty members are eager to share their infrastructure with their colleagues to enable efficient and successful execution of research and educational programs.
