The films were flexible, having elastic modulus of 1.0-1.5 GPa. Diminishing MB concentration in the aqueous phase was followed as the adsorption process advanced by using visible spectroscopy. Contributions of the individual components of the composites to adsorption were also investigated. Although the MB adsorption capacity was extensively high for silica, it was moderate for the composite, most likely owing to the occlusion of pores of silica by plasticizer to some extent. The improvement of MB adsorption capacity of the composites as the silica ratio increased was explicitly deduced from the optical microscopy photographs. The diffusion coefficients of MB through the composites were 5 × 10-13, 6 × 10-13, and 3 × 10-13 m2 s-1 with regression coefficients of 0.73, 0.89, and 0.88 for 0, 2, and 16% silica-containing composites, respectively. Because of the slow diffusion of MB in poly(vinyl chloride)-silica composites, using them as dynamic column adsorbent was not practical. However, these versatile plastics can be used as plastic labels, colored clothing, leather substitutes, antimicrobial medical devices, and laser printable surfaces.Article Citation - WoS: 11Citation - Scopus: 12Calf Thymus Dna Characterization and Its Adsorption on Different Silica Surfaces(Royal Society of Chemistry, 2015) Yetgin, Senem; Balköse, DevrimDNA adsorption is the initial stage of gene therapy for drug delivery systems and solid phase extraction methods of DNA purification. High pore volume and high adsorption capacity are simple requirements not only for producing 'smart' drug delivery systems but also the development of purification kits. Silica is the most used material for this purpose. The present study aimed at elucidating the calf thymus DNA biosorption process by the characterization of calf thymus DNA and silica to increase the efficiency of the currently used silica material. Mesoporous silica has long been used for DNA adsorption and silica aerogel is the new adsorbent investigated in the present study. When DNA solution was freeze dried on a silica wafer, self-assembled super helices formed as shown by atomic microscopy (AFM). Thus DNA existed not as single molecules but as large sized agglomerates in water. Thus it could be adsorbed in the macropores and on the external surface of adsorbents. Adsorption of calf thymus DNA to a silica aerogel, a mesoporous silica gel and a silica wafer was investigated in the present study. Silica aerogel was synthesized from TEOS by a supercritical ethanol drying process. The DNA adsorption capacity of the silica aerogel was nearly two times that of the mesoporous silica gel due to its macroporous structure and its higher silanol content. Silica aerogel was found to be a very promising material for DNA adsorption. Therefore silica aerogel can be considered as a good candidate for the delivery of DNA.Article Citation - Scopus: 1Optical and Surface Properties of Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles Dried by Conventional and Supercritical Ethanol Drying Techniques(Research India Publications, 2014) Egbuchunam, Theresa Obuajulu; Yetgin, Senem; Özmıhçı Ömürlü, Filiz; Balköse, DevrimZinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles were synthesized by conventional (ZnO-A) and supercritical ethanol drying (ZnO-B). Nitrogen adsorption/desorption analyses were performed to determine the surface areas of the powders. The specific surface area was 28.30m2/g and 10.61 m2/g for ZnO-A and ZnO-B respectively. The powders adsorbed very small amount of CO2with the conventionally dried powder adsorbing more CO2. Supercritical ethanol dried ZnO had ethanol on its surface which was eliminated by vacuum application at room temperature. Both powders had OH groups which were eliminated on heating up to 500°C under vacuum. However, OH groups were present in lower amounts in supercritical ethanol dried ZnO. The powders were characterized by UV-VIS optical absorption and room temperature photoluminescence spectroscopic analyses. The UV-VIS absorption spectrum showed an absorption band at 375nm due to ZnO nanoparticles. The photoluminescence spectrum of ZnO excited at 380nm exhibited three emission peaks: one at 424nm and 490nm corresponding to band gap excitonic emission and another located at 520nm due to the presence of singly ionized oxygen vacancies.Article Citation - WoS: 1Citation - Scopus: 1Flexible Pvc-Silica Composites as an Adsorptive Material for Water Soluble Dyes(Smithers Rapra Technology, 2013) Ulutan, Sevgi; Yetgin, Senem; Balköse, DevrimMethylene Blue (MB) adsorption studies were performed on flexible Polyvinyl Chloride/Silica composites which were obtained by using plastisol-plastigel technology. The diffusion of MB through the composites exhibited non-Fickian behavior with a diffusivity of 10-11 m2s-1. Thermodynamics and kinetics of adsorption were also investigated. The adsorption isotherms could be well defined with Langmuir model instead of Freundlich model. The thermodynamic parameters of methylene blue (MB) adsorption indicated that the adsorption is exothermic and spontaneous. The blends consisted of Polybenzimidazole/ Kevlar blend (40% FBI and 60% Kevlar®), Nomex Delta A (blend of 60% Kevlar and 40% Nomex®), Nomex Delta T (blend of 75% Nomex, 23% Kevlar, and 2% P140 antistatic fiber), and Nomex III (fabric with a 95/5 blend of Nomex and Kevlar) containing 1% steel fiber. TGA and DTG curves have been compared to evaluate thermal behavior of the FBI, Kevlar, and Nomex blends and the resuls were correlated with the moisture sorption data. The data were also compared with fiber morphologies provided by SEM and crystallinities derived from XRD diffrac tograms. Moisture adsorption isotherms were correlated with a number of empirical models, including Nernst, Freundlich, Handersen, Iglesias-Chirife, and with the models having a theoretical background such as Langmuir, BET, GAB, and Hüttig. The materials were examined using the BET equation. The surface areas of silk, cast Nylon 6 and muss Nylon 6 were determined as 108, 46 and 23 m2 g-1, respectively. Sepiolite did not fit BET equation. The adsorption and desorption isotherms of water vapour for wool were determined by both volumetric technique using a Coulter Omnisorp 100CX instrument and gravimetric method employing a Cahn 2000 electronic microbalance. Adsorption isotherm fitting to B.E.T. model and hysteresis on desorption was observed. The average effective diffusion coefficient of water in wool was found to be 8.4 × 10-14 m2 s-1 at 25°C from gravimetric data. The effects of packing height and air velocity on the breakthrough curves were also investigated in the wool packed columns. For pseudo first order model, k values changing between 0.33 × 10-6 -69 × 10-6 s-1 was obtained for 2.2-6.4 cm s-1 air velocity and 0.05-0.20 m packing height ranges.
