Master Thesis Use of Literature in Understanding the Transformation of Domestic Architecture: Case of İstanbul Between 1908 and 1950(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2018) Yılmaz, Merve; Çıkış, Şeniz; Çıkış, ŞenizDomestic architecture is tightly related with socio-cultural changes and transformations within the society. However collecting data about the social relations of a previous period in which the witnesses and the solid materials are not available is a difficult task. Literature may be a useful source at this point, in order to reach data about a period which not much has remained. Especially novels involve literary spaces reflecting the details of daily life which usually takes place in the house. The need for such study was determined after analysing the Turkish housing history. It was noticed that the architectural historians have usually mentioned about the physical, economic or politic factors which affected and shaped the housing but the social relations were usually dismissed. One of the essential targets of this study is to reveal these social relations which have an important role on house design. In order to trace the transformation of domestic architecture, five novels in Turkish Literature have been analysed. These novels have been selected by non-random sampling method. Space is specified as Istanbul and the time interval is determined as years between 1908 and 1950, when socio-cultural changes in the society accelerated. Some social relations which shaped and transformed the housing have been revealed by analysing and interpreting the chosen literary texts. Information provided from the literary texts and the previous knowledge gained from the written housing histories altogether creates a whole giving a comprehensive perspective to the housing subject.Master Thesis A Study on "temporary Post Disaster Housing Unit" Constructed With -Light Gauge Steelframing-(lgsf) System/(01. Izmir Institute of Technology, 2004) Terim, Belgin; Çıkış, ŞenizLight Gauge Steel Framing (LGSF) System is a structural system made of Cold Formed Steel (CFS) Profile Frames. The structural behavior of this new construction system is derived from the traditional wooden frame systems. The new material that has been used in LGSF system which is the profile cold-rolled from sheet steel is an industrial material that needs the control of computer systems for accuracy. The structural system has been examined for more than 40 years in the construction practice. It is an alternative building material for the world and for Turkey in the last years, specifically for 1-2 storey single family houses. This study aims to make analysis of Light Gauge Steel Framing system which is a developing construction system, to define efficient uses of the system at the moment and to propose new ones for the future. To obtain different conceptions and theories on the system has been the main goal of the evaluation part. To fulfill this goal; first, the different examples around the world have been examined in different aspects in detail to make a comparative evaluation, then, new opportunities in the usage area of LGSF system have been suggested. A Temporary Post-Disaster Housing Unit. has been studied as a case study. The case study is the heart of this study whereas the LGSF system has been examined by its lightweight, accurate, easy & fast montage, storable behavior characteristics as well as the structural properties. .Temporary housing. is still a demanded study for Turkey. To design a unit example with the new used LGSF system has been a study that helps both to show the benefits of LGSF in a temporary-housing and the new construction opportunity which fulfills the requirements of a temporary post-disaster housing unit. in Turkey conditions with the Turkish building market materials. While these issues have been worked out, the architectural approach has leaded this study. Design processes of the various examples have been inspected and the new project has been studied in a way to search .how architecture can use this system.Doctoral Thesis Transformation of 19th Century İzmir's Harbor Zone and Its Urban Fabric Via Morphological Approach(01. Izmir Institute of Technology, 2022) Gelişkan, Nil Nadire; Çıkış, Şenizİzmir, which has a considerable place among the Mediterranean port cities of the 19th century, is not only similar to other Mediterranean port cities due to its trade dynamics, but also differs with the diversity and political development of the actors who have a say in commerce. After the industrial revolution, the hierarchical structure in world trade is reshaped with the expansion of the market area of trade. While industrial countries are at the top of the pyramid, the peripherical countries, whose economy is based on agriculture, are at the lower levels. The position that distinguishes the Ottoman Empire from the others is that it is the scene of the endless competition between industrialized European countries that will start from the 18th century and continue until the 21st century. İzmir is one of the plateaus of this competition. The city, which was considered the second capital center of the empire after Istanbul, especially in the 19th century, continues to be one of the most important ports. In this period, architectural and urban design-scale arrangements and innovations were made in İzmir by the Ottoman government and on a local scale, but especially the initiatives of western countries had a significant impact on the morphology of the city. In this context, the morphological transformation of the city of Izmir in the 19th century, the location of Izmir in local, regional and global networks and its relations with which urban interventions will be evaluated through maps, drawings and documents related to railway and transportation, especially from the Ottoman archive records of the Presidency of State Archives dated after 1850. In this study, in addition to the previous Izmir narratives, the transformation and structuring of the parcels to be used for the Kordon region and mega transportation projects, which will serve especially the industry channels, will be studied at a lower scale. It is within the scope of the study to focus on how the urban fabric of İzmir harbor zone was transformed in the light of the historical and economic breaks experienced by the empire in this period, and to seek a new conceptual port reading for the 19th century İzmir.Doctoral Thesis Postformal Thought and Creativity in Design Process(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2017) Kaya, Nazife Aslı; Çıkış, ŞenizThe aim of this study is to reveal relations between creativity in design and cognitive development levels of designers with a Post-Piagetian approach. In this study design processes were deeply inspected with the aim of obtaining more comprehensive information about the effects of individual’s cognitive status on the design processes, problem-solving and idea generation quality. In this field, studies done so far have been conducted on test results as indicators of creativity. In this study, however, protocol analyses were also evaluated in addition to testing the results, and thanks to this addition, it was possible to determine the qualitative and quantitative effects of the cognitive development levels on creativity. Total twenty-five students voluntarily participated in the research. To collect data, two different methods were employed. Social Paradigm Belief Inventory (SPBI), was employed to determine students' cognitive stages and scores, and Think-aloud protocol, was used to elicit verbal reports of thought sequences of students. In order to analyse verbal reports for investigating designers' cognitive activities, Linkography method was conducted and general statistics of segments were measured. To exposure, the relations between creativity in design and cognitive development levels of designers, SPBI scores and obtained general statistical values of design sessions were correlated and findings showed that there is a strong and significant correlation between cognitive development levels and creativity in favour of dialectical thinking. Addition to this, participants’ partial protocols were analysed syntactically, and the networks were inspected to reveal the impacts of postformal thinking on creative design process with the help of Function-Behaviour-Structure (FBS) Ontology. The findings of the syntactic analysis also supported the finding of the correlations.Master Thesis Annexes and Extensions in Historical Buildings: an Ideological Perspective(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2002) İlter, Buket; Çıkış, ŞenizThe art of designing additions carries with it a host of unique challenges. Especially, in the case of annexes and extensions in historical buildings, ideology can be an important factor in shaping the design of the addition. Ideology.s close relation with the concept of identity also makes it a factor in shaping additions in historic buildings. However, studies about the subject generally address themselves to the examination of the functional necessities, and aesthetic concerns. Additions in historic buildings are mostly evaluated within the scope of conservation, and with their harmony to the historical context. This study attempts to analyse the design of additions in historical buildings from a different perspective, leaving aside the principles conservation and discussions of contextualism. The aim of the thesis is to analyse the reflections of ideological and social changes in the physical environment, and to examine the additions in historic buildings from that point of view. Within the scope of this thesis additions in historical buildings are investigated with special emphasis given to the concept of ideology. The interaction between ideology and architecture is explained through an examination of international and local samples. Also, the concept of conservation and historic building is discussed in relation to ideology. Basic reasons for building new architecture in historic settings are examined. Finally, classifications of addition buildings according to their location design approaches, and combined expressions are made.Doctoral Thesis A Survey on Spatial Effects of Newcomer Entrepreneurs in Rural Urla(01. Izmir Institute of Technology, 2022) Güçü, İlker; Çıkış, ŞenizToday, new production forms of rural space, which receive immigration and meet the entrepreneurial activities created by this population change, constitute the main aim of study. Thesis focuses on the mutual influence of rural space and rural entrepreneurship in terms of the architecture discipline. The main source of rural livelihood is agricultural production and animal husbandry from past to present. As a result of these migrations, the main livelihoods in the rural area are changing, developing and renewing. Rural architectural space is also in a process of change in line with these activities. In addition, what entrepreneurs understand from the countryside and their reflections gain importance in the transformed space. Based on the migration stories and spatial preferences of individuals who migrated from urban areas to rural, the study deals with thirty-four entrepreneurs and their enterprises located in the rural areas of Urla district of İzmir. Semi-structured interviews were conducted to measure the spatial context of enterprises located on Urla Wine Route and feeding this route. The spatial contexts of enterprises were grouped through the themes that emerged as a result of the analysis. As a result of the analyzes, it has been seen that the site plan, clousure movements, orientation and building form are the most used parameters in architectural design by newcomers. It is aimed that the study will contribute to the literature as it allows the rural entrepreneurship and ispatial context, which has been examined at an upper scale so far, to be evaluated at the scale of architectural spaceArticle Creativity in the Design Process: Cognitive Actions and Conceptual Transformations(Univ Catolica Colombia, Fac Diseno, 2025) Kaya, Nazife Asli; Cikis, SenizThis research explores the complex relationship between creativity and cognitive processes during the design process, focusing on the mechanisms that stimulate conceptual expansion and shifts in understanding how creative insights emerge. The study involved 25 participants who employed the think-aloud protocol to tackle a specific design task. Linkographic entropies derived from verbal data collected during design sessions were employed to identify critical moves (CM) and their corresponding design decisions. The CM networks were analysed and coded using the Function-Behaviour-Structure (FBS) ontology to classify design actions. Furthermore, semantic analysis was conducted to categorise the types of design transformations as either conceptual expansions or conceptual shifts. The findings reveal that conceptual shifts are achieved solely through Synthesis, while conceptual expansions serve as the foundational elements for these shifts. Cognitive actions-specifically reformulations and evaluations-were found to facilitate conceptual expansions and contribute to conceptual shifts at various levels. The effectiveness and type of these conceptual transformations are influenced by the distance between the knowledge sets used during cognitive actions. Formulation and Analysis do not contribute to fostering conceptual transformations. The study contributes to a deeper understanding of the cognitive processes underlying design creativity, providing insights for both design education and professional practice.Master Thesis Choral Works in Architecture in Terms of Hermeneutics(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2003) Işık, Arda; Çıkış, ŞenizDiscussions of the theoretical foundations of architecture increasingly refer to hermeneutics, a branch of continental European philosophy concerned with human understanding and the interpretation of written texts. Perez-Gomez, Vidler, Vattimo, Palmer and some contemporary theoreticians draw heavily on hermeneutics to question the ethical and epistemological latency of architecture . The concept of "hermeneutics as architectural discourse", which was first introduced by Perez-Gomez, naming "choral works", offers insights that may contribute to the understanding and procession of architecture regarding this issue of architectural epistemology . After briefly reviewing the historical development of hermeneutics as a method of interpretation, from its classical use through the modern debates, and confining the boundaries of "choral works" as architectural meaning, this thesis examines the contributions of choral works in architecture in terms of hermeneutics to the contemporary production methods and strategies of architecture. This background provides perspective for a review of recent hermeneutically-oriented architectural production modes. This includes the "event" diagrams of Bernard Tschumi redefining programming and de-structuring in architecture, Eisenmann's .space of between., Libeskind.s .traces of the invisible. for coding the affective structures of narratives and "hypersurface" theories confining [de] territories by computer aided design parameters.
