Master Thesis An Examination of Design Processes Adopted by a Company Involved in Design-Based Manufacturing and Forming an Approach To an Optimum System: a Case Study in Teba-Günkol(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2006) Ertok Eşit, Banu; Özcan, Ahmet Can; Özcan, A. CanToday, a company's competitive advantage is directly related to its capacity to develop new products and global competitive pressure has motivated many companies to change to a more rapid form of product development with an emphasis on team and cross functional working. Concurrent Engineering (CE), or Concurrent Design, is a widely recognized approach to improving product introduction which attracts increasing attention of companies throughout the world. In the context of today.s manufacturing industry, design is essentially a social and collaborative process, thereby imposing cross-functional integration on companies. CE can be defined as a development philosophy that could improve design and produce better process quality via both integration and coordination. The CE approach enables synchronization of structural design and manufacturing processes, thus reduces product development time, and decreases costs by eliminating many of the trial-error steps. This research focuses on CE by using a case-study approach carried out in a Turkish company which has been selected as a representative sample of the companies involved in design-based manufacturing in Turkey. In this thesis, the traditional methods used by the company are extensively analysed and a Concurrent Engineering system for the optimum design and manufacturing of new products is proposed. The objective of this study is to provide further insight into the organizational aspect for success in Concurrent Engineering practices in design-based manufacturing.Master Thesis Quality Function Deployment: a Method for User-Centered Design(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2005) Aslan, Cansel Elif; Özcan, Ahmet Can; Özcan, Ahmet CanSatisfying customer requirements is almost a must in today's highly competitive market conditions. Considering these conditions, any industrial design project should not be separated from marketing issues in order to gain advantage.Quality function deployment is one of the rational design methods that can be interesting to implement on industrial design studies. Combining the user-centered nature of the quality function deployment in industrial design introduces a user-centered focus in the design process. In this study, design and quality issues are reviewed and a sample case study is presented in relation with the subject.Master Thesis A Survey on Personal Computer Applications in Industrial Design Process(Izmir Institute of Technology, 1999) Aysan, A. Can; Özcan, A. CanIn this thesis, computer aided design systems are studied from the industrial designer's point of view. The study includes industrial design processes, computer aided design systems and the integration aspects. The technical issues are priorly studied, including current hardware and software technologies. The pure technical concepts are tried to be supported with real-world examples and graphics. Several important design software are examined, whether by personal practice or by literature research, depending on the availability of the software. Finally, the thesis include a case study, a 17" LCD computer monitor designed with a set of graphic programs including two-dimensional and three-dimensional packages. Keywords: Computers, industrial design methods, design software, computer aided design.Conference Object Progress Depends on Unbalance and Disorder(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 1997) Özcan, A. CanTechnology is a state of progress which depends on unbalanced structures of human functions and relations. Technology was once the vital element of mankind to survive in nature. But today, technology has reached a perfection level above any natural entity including homo technologicus. Thus, the natural selection has become the technological selection, and technology which was once a servant for mankind, has become the master. An attitude towards life which does not depend on ethical, logical or aesthetic principles only brings high technology to the wealthy and the powerful, discriminating the rest including nature itself.Master Thesis The Main Principles of Retrospective Approach in Automotive Design(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2007) Kaplan, Berkan; Özcan, A. CanIn this thesis, the meaning of retrospective design is studied in automotive industry from the industrial design point of view. The main purpose of this study is to find out the main principles of the retrospective approach in automotive design. In order to do this, many examples from a variety of different design disciplines are used and examples from automotive industry are deeply analyzed. After giving general information about the meaning of the word .retro. and what it means in design for different design areas, it will be focused on the use of retrospective approach in automotive design with reviewing the current examples of the retro vehicles. In the next chapter, two current examples of the retro vehicle, Chrysler PT Cruiser and Volkswagen New Beetle, are going to be considered and they are compared to each other according to their retrospective designs. This will help us to understand how retrospective approach differs from one design to another in automotive industry although they are put in the same category in general. In addition to that, there wick be a case study of making a retrospective vehicle of an existed Turkish car from the past, Anadol Böcek (1975), to practice to show how a retrospective approach can be applied in automotive design. Finally, it will conclude the summary of the retrospective automotive design and what it contains in its deep meaning.Master Thesis Design and Management of Brand Identity With an Action Research in Turkish Fashion Industry(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2004) Sencer, Göze; Özcan, Ahmet Can; Kipöz, ŞölenThis thesis studies design and managementof brand identity, considering emotion concepts. It is an action research thesis, which focused on achieving answers to two main questions: 1. How is brand identity designed, in order to create an emotional experience? 2. How are emotions directed to brand identity are measured, and thus provide a base for management of brand identity?(based on the widely accepted business argument that .nothing can be managed without measuring.Today, it is widely accepted that marketing and customers have evolved. The perceptions of brands and products have shifted from functionality or usability aspects to experiential and emotional aspects. Customers want to be excited about a product, surprised about a service, or desiring about a brand. As a result; design of brand identity elements (as well as products) needed to be reviewed and emphasized, and new metrics are needed; for this era. In other words; new research and measurement methods is needed for the new era.As this thesis. research method is action research, with dual aims both for action and research, the action part of this research is carried out with Jimmy Key© brand (brand name changed to JKEY© at the end of the action research, in 2004), which is a Turkish fashion brand that sells sports and casual wear to a young and educatedaudience in national and international markets.Researches in this work aimed to increase understanding of the theories and concepts related with brand identity and emotion. Literature review starts with an explanation of the evolution of marketing concepts from 1900.s; where the idea in action was mass consumption, to 21st century; where the experience economy dominates. Mood consumption is offered as a new marketing perspective for this age.The concepts reviewed in this thesis that are related with emotional design of brand are .Brand identity., .Brand Positioning., .Emotions., .Emotional Experiences. and .Moods., .Fashion. (from a social and economic view), .Personalization andCustomization. and .Emotional Branding.. The emotional instruments in brand research are psycho physiological instruments; facial expressions, voice and self report measures. A remarkable tool that uses facial, vocal and bodily expressions elicited by design of products is PrEmo tool of Desmet.Actions of this work focused on reviewing the current literature with an emotional consideration, and to brought about change in Jimmy Key© brand identity with various designs, and proposed consumer research methods and tools for measuring, and thus for managing, brand identity, in which the concepts of emotion could be taken into consideration. The proposed designs (including logo, naming, advertisements, tags, bags, packaging, catalog, shop windows.etc.) and the proposed brand measurement instruments (including questionnaires, focus groups, brand collages, shopping tests and finally the proposed instrument .MyBetie.) constitute the action part of this action research. All the proposed designs in this work are considered as physiological, sociological, psychological, ideological experiences of the brand identity similar to Jordan.s four-pleasure framework.Among the entire brand researches in action were very time consuming and high cost; while they were very crucial and beneficial for brand positioning and future tracking. So a need for a more effective instrument, which is also capable of measuring emotions, is realized. Thus, four brand research methods used in action were integrated into a new proposed instrument. And being a unique; personalized, cost effective, quick response brand research and measurement instrument; .MyBetie. is proposed at the end of the thesis.Master Thesis Designing for Experience: Example Experience Design Projects on Workspace(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2006) Önal, Özgür; Özcan, A. CanThe great experiences can be deliberate and are based upon principles that have been proven. This thesis study explored the most important of these principles before the practical study. After that, the study focused on making a practical study on the workspace domain in three main phases. In the data collecting phase, experience data was collected for a workspace domain by observing workspace activities. Used methods were photographing, informal interviews, field notes and ethnographic observation. In the data modeling phase, a data model were constructed. Pattern language was used as a base for re-modeling the experience data. The data model is simply a framework that allows the designer to document, collect, communicate and understand all design related information quickly and easily. During the design phase, this framework became the design guideline and was used as a roadmap for every single design idea.Framework also gives the opportunity of defining relations from patterns to patterns and from design ideas to patterns. This flexible opportunity lets the designer visualize experience scenarios with design ideas in a higher level of understanding. Framework has a special data encapsulation format which is inherited from pattern language. According to that format, short pattern names, short essence paragraphs and other sections makes easier to remember, communicate and connect the patterns with new ideas. At the end of the design phase, three different products which are actively related with the experience patterns were designed.Master Thesis The Social and Technical Development of Toilet Design(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2004) Aytaç, Sıdıka Mine; Özcan, Ahmet CanToilet is a critical link. The problem of body waste disposal is a subject that has always necessarily been the prime concern for humans living in society. Considering the evolution of the toilet is important for comprehending toilet design today and especially the deficiency of it. The idea of toilet is distinctly connected with the concept of cleanliness. The theory of bacteria and the rise of scientific thought gave rise to the concept of 'hygiene' and its appearance in daily life, which in turn altered the inside view of dwellings. Toilet is a vital part of this home system, distinctly related to human and environmental factors. Basically, the toilet is a machine for mixing faeces, urine, toilet paper, and water. This machine can be equipped with a number of accessories, but whatever its shape, in fact the WC is more than an object based on the idea of disposal of flushing away and hiding or diluting something we do not want. It is obvious that the disposal of waste can only be a part of 'toilet design'.In the history of the toilet, the main problem has remained the disposal of human waste at city level. This was assumed to be solved when the sewerage system was introduced. In fact, the world has yet to deal with environmental problems. Ecological sanitation offers a solution to toilets' share of pollution. Moreover, the addition to ecological conditions, it is important to design a toilet by thinking in a way regarding human psychological and physiological needs. For taking toilet design a step further, this research aims to reveal criteria to solve sanitation problems by focusing on the entire mechanism including, the toilet and toilet system, which should be considered and designed to serve all needs of cultures, ages, differences as a part of everyday life, to be adopted in varies occasions adding to global needs and realities.especially to reach 'the ideal toilet'.Master Thesis Stages and Methods of Creativity in an Industrial Product Development (with a Case Study in Bicyle Design)(Izmir Institute of Technology, 1998) Rıza, Aslan; Özcan, CanThis thesis is aimed on researching the creativity process that is concealed in the designprocess itself. The following chapters will include certain creativity concepts that were filtered out of a variety of processes. There are certain aspects to take into consideration as not only of a creative process but the progressive way of following certainmethods of design. The first chapter includes some examples on the blocks that ceasethe creativity in the design process. Examples will be given to display the way of keepingthe continuity of the creative mind. These are methods that designers use in daily life but are not aware of its existence. Processes will be included in the second chapter that will focus on the way of designing and methods of the design process. These methodswere included in order to give the creativity process an engineering pull-down andcease it from artistic dispersal. It could be seen that examples given from a bicycle designwill be included in all chapters. This is to uphold, and back-up the third chapter. In this chapter the case study of a bicycle design is included. The processes stated in the previouschapters were used in the process of the bicycle design.Master Thesis Industrial Product Design for Elderly People in Interior Spaces(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2006) Şimşekkan, Görkem; Özcan, A. CanThroughout the history of mankind, the aging concept has been one of the oldest and most significant concerns of all societies and individuals. In the contemporary world, increasing ageing of the population has globally created phenomena and priorities that affect life styles and world views of all people. Demographic changes show the elderly population is the fastest growing part of the world.s population, particularly in Japan, Europe and the USA. Therefore, populations become older and more disabled and these trends continue in the future. The aging process restricts the many physical and cognitive abilities of the elderly.Besides, most of elderly people continue to live their own households. Present products which for increasing aging population living alone have become inadequate to meet their changing physical, sensory and cognitive requirements during the aging process. For this reason, product design for elderly and its criteria which can be adapted to global needs of people to reach an optimal solution should be considered profoundly. Products which can respond many physical problems of elderly help them to accomplish the activities of daily living in interior spaces and act as a physical and cognitive assistive role in their lives. This study aims to examine the domestic products which are being used by elderly people in interior spaces to make daily living activities more efficient and satisfying for them and reveal the criteria to reach a solution. These products aim to improve the independently living and the quality of life of elderly people and connect them to social life.
