Master Thesis An Approach To Summarize Video Data in Compressed Domain(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2007) Şimşek, Gökhan; Gümüştekin, Şevket; Gümüştekin, ŞevketThe requirements to represent digital video and images efficiently and feasibly have collected great efforts on research, development and standardization over past 20 years. These efforts targeted a vast area of applications such as video on demand, digital TV/HDTV broadcasting, multimedia video databases, surveillance applications etc. Moreover, the applications demand more efficient collections of algorithms to enable lower bit rate levels, with acceptable quality depending on application requirements. In our time, most of the video content either stored, transmitted is in compressed form. The increase in the amount of video data that is being shared attracted interest of researchers on the interrelated problems of video summarization, indexing and abstraction. In this study, the scene cut detection in emerging ISO/ITU H264/AVC coded bit stream is realized by extracting spatio-temporal prediction information directly in the compressed domain. The syntax and semantics, parsing and decoding processes of ISO/ITU H264/AVC bit-stream is analyzed to detect scene information. Various video test data is constructed using Joint Video Team.s test model JM encoder, and implementations are made on JM decoder. The output of the study is the scene information to address video summarization, skimming, indexing applications that use the new generation ISO/ITU H264/AVC video.Article Citation - WoS: 11Citation - Scopus: 11Calibration of Double Stripe 3d Laser Scanner Systems Using Planarity and Orthogonality Constraints(Elsevier Ltd., 2014) Ozan, Şükrü; Gümüştekin, ŞevketIn this study, 3D scanning systems that utilize a pair of laser stripes are studied. Three types of scanning systems are implemented to scan environments, rough surfaces of near planar objects and small 3D objects. These scanners make use of double laser stripes to minimize the undesired effect of occlusions. Calibration of these scanning systems is crucially important for the alignment of 3D points which are reconstructed from different stripes. In this paper, the main focus is on the calibration problem, following a treatment on the pre-processing of stripe projections using dynamic programming and localization of 2D image points with sub-pixel accuracy. The 3D points corresponding to laser stripes are used in an optimization procedure that imposes geometrical constraints such as coplanarities and orthogonalities. It is shown that, calibration procedure proposed here, significantly improves the alignment of 3D points scanned using two laser stripes.Article Citation - WoS: 3Citation - Scopus: 3Texture Analysis of Polymer Modified Bitumen Images(Carl Hanser Verlag GmbH & Co. KG, 2011) Gümüştekin, Şevket; Topal, Ali; Şengöz, BurakThis study aims to analyze the textural features extracted from microscopic images of elastomeric and plastomeric type polymer modified bitumen (PMB) including five different types and contents of polymers. Fluorescence microscopy was used to capture microscopic images from thin films of PMB samples at different magnification scales (400×, 100×, and 40×). Gabor filters were utilized to extract the textural features of bitumen images. The features were used in three different query tests to quantify their representation capacity. The K nearest neighbor classifier was tested using leave-one-out cross validation. Textural analysis on the captured images provided numerical results that are in compliance with subjective visual tests. © 2011 Carl Hanser Verlag, Munich, Germany.Conference Object Citation - Scopus: 1Hava Fotoğraflarından Deniz Kıyılarının Belirlenmesi(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2006) Kahraman, Metin; Gümüştekin, ŞevketThe unique structures of different coastline segments provide distinctive image features for several applications such as oceanography, georeferencing, cartography and autonomous navigation. In this paper, a procedure involving automatic multiresolution coastline extraction is described. Using this method, sea and land textures are segmented utilizing cooccurrence and histogram features of wavelet image representation. The coastlines are identified as the boundaries of the sea regions.Conference Object Ölçülmüş Çydf Verilerinin Lafortune Modeli ile Etkin Gösterimi(IEEE, 2010) Ozan, Şükrü; Gümüştekin, ŞevketThe bi-directional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) describes the appearance of a material by its interaction with light. In this study, Lafortune BRDF model is fitted to densely sampled measured BRDF data by using Levenberg - Marquardt Algorithm. The obtained results are visualised by a physically based ray tracing software and the proposed method is analysed. ©2010 IEEE.Doctoral Thesis Joint Reconstruction of Surface Geometry and Reflection Properties by Using Image Based Methods(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2015) Ozan, Şükrü; Gümüştekin, ŞevketIn this thesis, we aim to capture realistic geometrical descriptions of real world scenes and objects with a special effort to characterize reflection properties. After a brief review of the stereo imaging literature, we show our contributions to enhance stereo matching performance by identifying and eliminating specular surface reflections. The identification of specular reflection can be done both passively and actively. We use dichromatic-based methods to identify and eliminate specular reflections passively. We utilize polarization imaging methods to do the same job actively. In this work we also study structured light based methods that can give better reconstruction results compared to stereo imaging methods. We propose three laser scanners equipped with a pair of line lasers and a method to calibrate these systems. Another convenient way to obtain good surface reconstruction results using structured light is to use projectors that can be used as a light source that project complicated patterns. We show our results from a digital camera-projector-based scanning system as well. This system can robustly generate a very dense reconstruction of surfaces. We also use the projector based scanning system to determine the surface reflection properties. Using high dynamic range imaging (HDRI) techniques makes it possible for us to estimate scene radiance values. Since we can determine the incoming and outgoing light directions, we are able to measure bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) values from reconstructed surface points for corresponding directions. If the sample surface have not only diffuse reflection components but also a sufficient amount of specular highlights, it is possible to approximate BRDF corresponding to a surface by fitting an analytical BRDF model to the measured data. In our work we preferred to use Phong BRDF model. Finally, we present results with rendered synthetic images where the parameter values of the Phong model were estimated using scans of real objects.Conference Object Citation - WoS: 2Citation - Scopus: 2Çok Bakışlı 3b Geriçatımın Polarizasyon Görüntüleme Kullanımıyla İyileştirilmesi(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2014) Ozan, Şükrü; Gümüştekin, ŞevketPerformance of stereo imaging methods, which are used to find depth information of a scene, can be adversely affected by surface reflection properties of subjects in the scene and possible change in relative camera and light source positions. In this study a catadioptric multiview imaging system, which is constructed by using planar mirrors, is proposed. Stereo matching problems which are caused by the specular reflections in the scene are highlighted and it is shown that those problems can be significantly alleviated by using polarization images.Conference Object Detection of Urban Change Using Remote Sensing and Gis: Izmir Case(Taylor and Francis Ltd., 2008) Tarhan, Çiğdem; Arkon, Cemal; Çelik, M.; Gümüştekin, Şevket; Tecim, V.This study is an example of how land use changes could be detected via high resolution remotely sensed data. In order to perform "change detection" IKONOS satellite images, belonging to 2001 and 2004, have been used. An automated Graphical User Interface (GUI) has been created for detection of environment. Different image enhancement techniques and a fuzzy inference system have been combined in the GUI. The detection results are classified according to some basic levels such as 20-50% and 70%. Additionally, four different change detection algorithms have been applied which are pixel-based, object based, feature based. These algorithms have been examined according to change detection levels with different image enhancement techniques. At the end of the study, the results have been compared. Conference Object Citation - WoS: 2Enhancing Stereo Matching Performance by Using Polarization Images(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2013) Ozan, Şükrü; Gümüştekin, ŞevketFinding depth information from a scene by using stereo imaging is a widely used and effective method. But surface reflection properties of subjects in the scene, possible change in relative camera and light source locations have a negative effect on stereo matching performance in scenes where the specular reflection is evident. In this study the situations where the specular reflections in the scenes disturbs stereo matching performance are highlighted and the solution of this problem by using polarization imaging methods is examined.
