Effect of Traffic Arrival Distributions on Routing Strategy in Multi-Hop Wireless Networks
(Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), 2016) Aydoğdu, Canan
The basic problem of whether direct transmission or multi- hop routing increases goodput in multi-hop wireless net- works still lacks investigation from many aspects. This ar- ticle, approaches this problem by considering the effect of different traffic arrival distributions on the choice of rout- ing strategy for enhancing goodput of IEEE 802.11 DCF based multi-hop wireless networks under hidden terminal existence. Different traffic arrival distributions including Poisson, constant bit rate (CBR), Pareto and Exponential are considered, relaxing the generally adopted Poisson as- sumption, for various data rates over a wide range of traffic loads extending from unsaturated to saturated traffic loads. The goodput performance for all traffic arrival distribu- tions is found to be dependent on the traffic load in multi- hop networks. Of the four traffic models used, the network achieved the best goodput with Pareto and Exponential ar- rival distributions for light traffic loads, where CBR per- forms slightly better under heavy loads. The results suggest that a traffic load-aware pre-control mechanism on the traffic arrivals to the IEEE 802.11 MAC layer might provide signicant goodput gains in multi-hop wireless networks.

Goodput and Throughput Comparison of Single-Hop and Multi-Hop Routing for Ieee 802.11 Dcf-Based Wireless Networks Under Hidden Terminal Existence
(John Wiley and Sons Inc., 2016) Aydoğdu, Canan; Karaşan, Ezhan
We investigate how multi-hop routing affects the goodput and throughput performances of IEEE 802.11 distributed coordination function-based wireless networks compared with direct transmission (single hopping), when medium access control dynamics such as carrier sensing, collisions, retransmissions, and exponential backoff are taken into account under hidden terminal presence. We propose a semi-Markov chain-based goodput and throughput model for IEEE 802.11-based wireless networks, which works accurately with both multi-hopping and single hopping for different network topologies and over a large range of traffic loads. Results show that, under light traffic, there is little benefit of parallel transmissions and both single-hop and multi-hop routing achieve the same end-to-end goodput. Under moderate traffic, concurrent transmissions are favorable as multi-hopping improves the goodput up to 730% with respect to single hopping for dense networks. At heavy traffic, multi-hopping becomes unstable because of increased packet collisions and network congestion, and single-hopping achieves higher network layer goodput compared with multi-hop routing. As for the link layer throughput is concerned, multi-hopping increases throughput 75 times for large networks, whereas single hopping may become advantageous for small networks. The results point out that the end-to-end goodput can be improved by adaptively switching between single hopping and multi-hopping according to the traffic load and topology.

The Effect of Additional Telerounding on Postoperative Outcomes, Patient and Surgeon Satisfaction Rates in the Patients Who Underwent Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy
(Iniestares, S.A., 2019) Aydoğdu, Özgü; Şen, Volkan; Yarımoğlu, Serkan; Aydoğdu, Canan; Bozkurt, İbrahim H.; Yonguç, Tarık
INTRODUCTION: We wanted to investigate the potential effect of additional telerounding system on postoperative outcomes, patient and surgeon satisfaction rates in the patients who underwent percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PNL). METHODS: Eighty patients who underwent PNL were included in the study. The patients were randomly divided to two groups. Group 1 included 40 patients who were followed-up with standard rounds and group 2 included 40 patients who were followed-up with telerounding in addition to standard rounds. Patient and surgeon satisfaction rates were assessed with a visual analog scale (VAS) where 0 point represents very dissatisfied and 100 points very satisfied. RESULTS: Mean time of preoperative telerounding visit was 3.65 +/- 0.59 (2-4) minutes. Mean time of telerounding visits on the postoperative 1st and 2nd days was 3.80 +/- 0.62 and 2.9 +/- 0.91 minutes respectively. The VAS score evaluating the surgeon's satisfaction rate for telerounding was 91 +/- 11.2 and patients expressed a high level of satisfaction with 72.5%. CONCLUSION: The use of additional telerounding in urological patient care provides high satisfaction rates for both the patients and the surgeon. However the findings of the present study don't underestimate the importance of personal surgeon-patient interaction.

IEEE 802.11 Ad-Hoc Aǧlarda Kalan Sekme Sayısının Uyarlanması ile Çok-Sekmeli Yol-Atamalarda Ulaştırılan İş Çöküşünün Önlenmesi
(IEEE, 2017) Bayulu, Hande; Oncer, Merve; Aydogdu, Canan
With the vision of the internet of things (IoT), it is expected that wireless networks will grow, concentrate and traffic carried will increase in the future. In wireless networks, multi-hop communication can be used instead of single-hop communication that we are accustomed today. Multi-hop communication is known to provide enhanced goodput performance for large and dense wireless networks under moderate traffic load. Nevertheless, the major problem is the goodput collapse experienced under high traffic load due to packet losses. One of the reasons of this problem in multi-hop communication is the emergence of a hidden terminal problem that we are not encountering in single-hop communication. In this study, two methods, prioritizing frames and varying contention window size according to the Residual Hop Count (RHC), are proposed and goodput performance is investigated through simulations. As a result of the studies, the goodput performance has been increased significantly under high traffic load.

Effects of Transmission Rate on the Performance of Ieee 802.11 Dcf Based Multi-Hop Wireless Networks
(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2012) Sancaklı, Sibel; Aydoğdu, Canan
Multi-hop wireless networks offer promising applications for future communications and they differ from widespread single-hop networks. Throughput (node-to-node successfully transmitted bits per second) is an important performance metric in single-hop wireless net- works, whereas goodput (end-to-end successfully delivered bits per second) becomes an indication of the performance in multi-hop networks. Energy-efficiency is another impor- tant performance metric due to the limited battery life of mobile devices. Main factors that affect the network performances are packet collisions that occur due to the hidden terminal problem and blocking of packets at interface queues at intermediate nodes in multi-hop networks. In this dissertation, the effect of transmission rate on goodput, throughput and energy performances of IEEE 802.11g DCF based on multi-hop wireless networks are in- vestigated over a large range of traffic loads. The performances are observed under direct transmission and multi-hop transmission, considering MAC contention such as binary ex- ponential backoff, retransmissions, collisions and overhearing of nodes. IEEE 802.11g DCF is used because it supports high data rates and has interoperability with the older version of IEEE standards. Network Simulator 2 is modified to compute the goodput, throughput and energy per bit (EPB) performance metrics under perfect channel condi- tions. The results reveal that varying the data rate has no effect on goodput, throughput and energy under light traffic loads. Under moderate-to-heavy traffic loads, goodput and energy efficiency performances drop sharply whereas throughput remains constant. Hid- den terminals and interface queue blocking is observed to be the reason for performance reduction of increasing goodput and EPB which increase with traffic load under moderate- to-heavy traffic loads. This suggests that a rate adaptation algorithm, which discriminates the reason of packet drops and keeps the transmission rate at the maximum can improve goodput and energy performances significantly for multi-hop wireless networks.

Joint Effect of Data Rate and Routing Strategy on Energy-Efficiency of Ieee 802.11 Dcf Based Multi-Hop Wireless Networks Under Hidden Terminal Existence
(Elsevier Ltd., 2015) Aydoğdu, Canan; Sancaklı, Sibel
We investigate the joint effect of data rate and routing strategy on energy-efficiency of multi-hop wireless networks incorporating a comprehensive behavior of the IEEE 802.11 DCF under the presence of hidden terminals. Two basic routing strategies, direct transmission versus multi-hop routing, are considered over a large range of traffic loads. The goal of this study is to layout guidelines for a cross-layer energy-efficient rate adaptation algorithm, which takes medium access control and network layer dynamics into account together with the hidden terminal effect. Our results show that, for the low-power wireless IEEE 802.11g standard considered in this article, the highest data rate consumes the least power in multi-hop wireless networks when hidden terminals mostly constitute the reason of collisions. In case of channel impairments, adapting the rate jointly with the routing strategy can save the energy consumed per bit by up to 250% under moderate traffic loads and much more under heavy traffic loads. © 2015 Elsevier B.V.
