Abstract
Motivations, challenges and requirements of optical layer monitoring in PONs are discussed. An exhaustive review of monitoring systems is given considering both Time-Division Multiplexed PON (TDM-PON) and Wavelength-Division Multiplexed PON (WDM-PON) cases. © 2008 IEEE.
