Music Information Retrieval for Turkish Music: Problems, Solutions and Tools
(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2009) Bozkurt, Barış; Gedik, Ali Cenk; Karaosmanoğlu, M. Kemal

We present an error analysis on the application of non-linear embedding on pairwise evolutionary distances inferred over a collection of genetic sequences following multiple sequence alignment. To this end, we have generated gene sequences evolved by random substitutions along three different evolutionary pathways with known evolutionary distances between every sequence pair. We have compared the discrepancy between the inferred evolutionary distances to the true distances before and after non-linear embedding into a low dimensional vector space. The results indicate that non-linear embedding achieves significant reduction in error in the estimated evolutionary distances. Consequently, nonlinear embedding of evolutionary distances can provide more reliable inferences on the evolutionary relationships between genetic sequences. ©2010 IEEE.

In this study, two new approaches are proposed to calculate mutual information between two random variables from data. These approaches are constructed in a way to use the properties of the differential entropy under linear transformations and to try to minimize conditional entropy in a model-free manner. In comparisons with a widely used mutual information estimator, the Kraskov method, the methods that we termed as unit vector parametrization and data fitting based estimators, offered an advantage in terms of computation speed.

The literature on the Regenerated Gratings has been summarised in terms of the key design, and performance parameters. Afterwards, the practical issues such as initial reflectivity, fiber type, and the effect of annealing cycle were investigated by the way of experiments for developing high temperature sensors.

In this paper, handwritten character recognition by using characters' writing movements is investigated. To obtain the information about writing movements a 3-axis accelerometer is used. Just like most of other sensors, 3-axis accelerometers give the actual movement signal as well as noise. Before the recognition step, all of the signals need to be preprocessed and the noisy parts need to be removed. So, Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD) and normalization preprocessing steps are applied to the signals. Finally, the signals in the dataset are compared with Dynamic Time Warping for classification and accurate classification rate of 91.92% is obtained.

It is essential to monitor the behavior of composite materials during manufacturing process to ensure the high quality of manufactured materials. For this purpose, the use of optical fiber sensing, particularly the embedding of fiber Bragg grating (FRG) sensors into composite materials has been gaining growing popularity. In this context, we design a FBG-based alternative sensor interrogation system and completed the theoretical analysis for the prospect of providing the residual stresses appearing during fabrication process of composite materials. It has been also realized, in this paper, the preliminary experimental trials by monitoring FRG sensors embedded into fiber reinforced thermo-set composites for the purpose of process monitoring.

With the vision of the internet of things (IoT), it is expected that wireless networks will grow, concentrate and traffic carried will increase in the future. In wireless networks, multi-hop communication can be used instead of single-hop communication that we are accustomed today. Multi-hop communication is known to provide enhanced goodput performance for large and dense wireless networks under moderate traffic load. Nevertheless, the major problem is the goodput collapse experienced under high traffic load due to packet losses. One of the reasons of this problem in multi-hop communication is the emergence of a hidden terminal problem that we are not encountering in single-hop communication. In this study, two methods, prioritizing frames and varying contention window size according to the Residual Hop Count (RHC), are proposed and goodput performance is investigated through simulations. As a result of the studies, the goodput performance has been increased significantly under high traffic load.

We consider the problem of secure communication with multiple antenna transmission in temporally correlated channels. In order to achieve a secrecy gain, a channel state information of the intended receiver at the transmitter is required. In this work, we present a limited feedback link by employing differential codebook which utilizes the temporal correlation properties of the wireless channels for a secure multi-antenna system. The secrecy performances are shown for different channel correlations.

In this study, two novel entropy and mutual information based algorithms have been proposed to characterize the stimulus specific brain activity. In the first method, inter channel mutual information of electroencephalography signals has been calculated and the channels that exhibit synchronized behaivour during stimulus. In the second method, the responsiveness of the individual channels has been characterized in an entropic manner and then, the channels which demonstrates stimulus specific entropic behavior have been obtained. The performance of the proposed methods has been simulated on a real dataset obtained from Dokuz Eylul University Brain Biophysics laboratory. The results demonstrate that different regions of the brain exhibit a coherent activity during stimulus.
