    Evaluation of the Makam Scale Theory of Arel for Music Information Retrieval on Traditional Turkish Art Music

    Current music information retrieval (MIR) methods are specifically tailored to the needs of western music. Therefore, it is not straightforward to apply these methods to non-western musics such as traditional Turkish art music (TTAM). Western music theory plays a crucial role in MIR studies. The divergence, however, between theory and practice in traditional Turkish art music (TTAM) results in a lack of a reliable theory of TTAM on which MIR techniques can be based. This is particularly true for theories regarding pitch scales and interval structures in TTAM. In this paper, we evaluate the most influential (yet disputable) theory of TTAM, Arel theory, by means of a makam classification task, to understand whether it can provide a basis for MIR studies on TTAM in a similar way western music theory provides a basis for MIR studies on western music. It is shown that Arel theory is overall successful when applied for modality finding in TTAM and that it can be improved if small modifications are introduced following pitch values obtained from musical practice. © 2009, Copyright Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.

    Adaptive Visual Servo Regulation Control for Camera-In Configuration With a Fixed Camera Extension

    In this paper, image-based regulation control of a robot manipulator with an uncalibrated vision system is discussed. To compensate for the unknown camera calibration parameters, a novel prediction error formulation is presented. To achieve the control objectives, a Lyapunov-based adaptive control strategy is employed. The control development for the camera-in-hand problem is presented in detail and a fixed-camera problem is included as an extension.

    Novel Square Spiral Antennas for Broadband Applications

    An investigation of novel square spiral antennas is presented. The antennas are designed by considering the special arrangements of spiral arms. The new designs perform much better in terms of the frequency independency of the fundamental antenna parameters, when compared with the well known and widely used Archimedean spiral antenna, which makes the antennas very suitable for broadband wireless applications. Experimental results are also presented and there is a good agreement between the measured and numerical data.

    Weighing Diverse Theoretical Models on Turkish Maqam Music Against Pitch Measurements: a Comparison of Peaks Automatically Derived From Frequency Histograms With Proposed Scale Tones

    Since the early 20th century, various theories have been advanced in order to mathematically explain and notate modes of Traditional Turkish music known as maqams. In this article, maqam scales according to various theoretical models based on different tunings are compared with pitch measurements obtained from select recordings of master Turkish performers in order to study their level of match with analysed data. Chosen recordings are subjected to a fully computerized sequence of signal processing algorithms for the automatic determination of the set of relative pitches for each maqam scale: f0 estimation, histogram computation, tonic detection + histogram alignment, and peak picking. For nine well-recognized maqams, automatically derived relative pitches are compared with scale tones defined by theoretical models using quantitative distance measures. We analyse and interpret histogram peaks based on these measures to find the theoretical models most conforming with all the recordings, and hence, with the quotidian performance trends influenced by them.

    Taylor Series Approximation of Semi-Blind Blue Channel Estimates With Applications To Dtv

    We present a low-complexity method for approximating the semi-blind best linear unbiased estimate (BLUE) of a channel impulse response (CIR) vector for a communication system, which utilizes a periodically transmitted training sequence. The BLUE, for h, for the general linear model, y = Ah + w + n, where w is correlated noise (dependent on the CIR, h) and the vector n is an Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN) process, which is uncorrelated with w is given by h = (ATC(h)-1A)-1ATC(h)-1y. In the present work, we propose a Taylor series approximation for the function F(h) = (ATC(h)-1A)-1ATC(h)-1y. We describe the full Taylor formula for this function and describe algorithms using, first-, second-, and third-order approximations, respectively. The algorithms give better performance than correlation channel estimates and previous approximations used, at only a slight increase in complexity. Our algorithm is derived and works within the framework imposed by the ATSC 8-VSB DTV transmission system, but will generalize to any communication system utilizing a training sequence embedded within data.

    An Automatic Pitch Analysis Method for Turkish Maqam Music

    Automatic pitch analysis of large audio databases is essential for studies on music information retrieval and developing a pitch scale theory for Turkish maqam music. However no such study is available. In this article, we first determine the main obstacle as the alignment of frequency analysis results from multiple files. We then propose a new method to automatically detect the tonic of a recording, align the data, and estimate overall frequency histograms from large databases. We show that such histograms can be successfully used for pitch scale (tuning) studies on the recordings of Tanburi Cemil Bey, an undisputed master of the genre

    The Resonant Behavior of the Fibonacci Fractal Tree Antennas

    An investigation of a novel fractal tree antenna with the application to two different geometries is presented. The antenna is designed by using the special Fibonacci number sequence which leads to nonuniform branch length ratios to form the fractal tree. This new approach gives better performance, especially in the miniaturization of the antenna, when compared with the conventional designs. The results obtained from the experiments are also compared with the computed ones and there is a very good agreement between the numerical and measured data.

    Design of Coupling Structures for Groove Guide Resonators

    Three different coupling structures for a groove guide resonator operating at 10 GHz are investigated. First, propagatable modes are determined analytically. Then, the efficiency of the coupling structures is investigated by means of the method of moments and measurements. Finally, a groove guide resonator is designed and the resonance spectrum for each coupling structure is computed numerically, applying the finite-difference time-domain method. Numerical results are compared with experimental measurements. There is good agreement between the measured and simulated data.

    Stable non-Gaussian noise parameter modulation in digital communication

    The parameter of the stable non-Gaussian noise sequence is modulated by the binary message sequence to achieve a secure communication system. The characteristic exponent 'alpha' of a stable non-Gaussian noise sequence carries the binary information. The receiver of the proposed random communication system demodulates the received signal by estimating the parameters of the transmitted noise sequence to recover the binary message sequence.

    Low Complexity Zf Receiver for Orthogonal Sfbc-Ofdm in Broadband Wireless Channels

    Orthogonal space-frequency block coded (SFBC) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems are analysed in broadband wireless channels where adjacent subcarriers do not have the same channel coefficients and the matched filter receiver causes an error floor in bit error rate performance. To avoid this, a low complexity zero forcing (ZF) receiver for the orthogonal schemes with two and three transmit and one receive antennas are proposed.
