Conference Object Detection of Urban Change Using Remote Sensing and Gis: Izmir Case(Taylor and Francis Ltd., 2008) Tarhan, Çiğdem; Arkon, Cemal; Çelik, M.; Gümüştekin, Şevket; Tecim, V.This study is an example of how land use changes could be detected via high resolution remotely sensed data. In order to perform "change detection" IKONOS satellite images, belonging to 2001 and 2004, have been used. An automated Graphical User Interface (GUI) has been created for detection of environment. Different image enhancement techniques and a fuzzy inference system have been combined in the GUI. The detection results are classified according to some basic levels such as 20-50% and 70%. Additionally, four different change detection algorithms have been applied which are pixel-based, object based, feature based. These algorithms have been examined according to change detection levels with different image enhancement techniques. Specifically, robust integral of the sign of the error feedback term and an adaptive term is fused with a proportional integral controller. Lyapunov-based stability analysis techniques are utilised to prove global asymptotic convergence of the output tracking error. Extensive numerical simulations are presented to illustrate the performance of the proposed robust adaptive controller.Article Citation - WoS: 10Citation - Scopus: 10On the Helmholtz Theorem and Its Generalization for Multi-Layers(Taylor and Francis Ltd., 2016) Kuştepeli, AlpThe decomposition of a vector field to its curl-free and divergence-free components in terms of a scalar and a vector potential function, which is also considered as the fundamental theorem of vector analysis, is known as the Helmholtz theorem or decomposition. In the literature, it is mentioned that the theorem was previously presented by Stokes, but it is also mentioned that Stokes did not introduce any scalar and vector potentials in his expressions, which causes a contradiction. Therefore, in this article, Stokess and Helmholtzs representations are examined in detail to reveal and emphasize their differences, similarities and important points. The Helmholtz theorem is obtained for all kinds of spaces by using the theory of distributions in a comprehensive and rigorous manner with detailed explanations, which also leads to a new surface version of the Helmholtz theorem or a new surface decomposition, resulting in the canonical form; hence, it is different than the one suggested previously in terms of two scalar functions. The generalized form of the Helmholtz theorem is also presented by employing the same approach when there is a multi-layer on the surface of discontinuity, which also corresponds to the extension of the theorem to fields with singularities of higher order.Article Citation - WoS: 14Citation - Scopus: 20Non-Linear Control of Variable-Speed Wind Turbines With Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generators: a Robust Backstepping Approach(Taylor and Francis Ltd., 2016) Şeker, Murat; Zergeroğlu, Erkan; Tatlıcıoğlu, EnverIn this study, a robust backstepping approach for the control problem of the variable-speed wind turbine with a permanent magnet synchronous generator is presented. Specifically, to overcome the negative effects of parametric uncertainties in both mechanical and electrical subsystems, a robust controller with a differentiable compensation term is proposed. The proposed methodology ensures the generator velocity tracking error to uniformly approach a small bound where practical tracking is achieved. Stability of the overall system is ensured by Lyapunov-based arguments. The proposed controller compensates uncertainties in the system dynamics and achieves asymptotic tracking while requiring only the knowledge of the sign of the leading principal minors of the input gain matrix. A Lyapunov-based argument backed up with an integral inequality is applied to prove the asymptotic stability of the closed-loop system. While makam is most simply defined as an organization of melodic phrases, there has been very little effort to computationally study melodic structure in makam music pieces. In this work, we propose an automatic analysis algorithm that takes as input symbolic data in the form of machine-readable scores that are segmented into phrases. Using a measure of makam membership for phrases, our method outputs for each phrase the most likely makam the phrase comes from. The proposed makam membership definition is based on Bayesian classification and the algorithm is specifically designed to process the data with overlapping classes. The proposed analysis system is trained and tested on a large data set of phrases obtained by transferring phrase boundaries manually written by experts of makam music on printed scores, to machine-readable data. Schwartz is a very useful and convenient way for the analysis of physical problems since physical distributions, especially charge distributions yielding the discontinuity of the potential and boundary conditions, can be correctly described in terms of mathematical distributions. To obtain the charge distributions, the distributional form of the Laplacian is applied to the Poisson's equation; therefore, for the correct representations and interpretations, the distributional forms and their proper applications are very important. In this article, it is shown that the distributional form of the Laplacian has been presented by Schwartz and also others with a missing term, leading to confusing and wrong results mathematically, and as a result electromagnetically; and the revised, correct, and complete distributional representations of the Laplace operator, the Poisson equation, and double layers, defined as the dipole layer and equidensity layer, are obtained and presented with detailed discussions and explanations including boundary conditions. By using the revised form of the Laplacian, Green's theorem is obtained explicitly with special emphases about important points and differences with previous works. Kemal; Karaçalı, Bilge; Ünal, ErdemAutomatic melodic segmentation is a topic studied extensively, aiming at developing systems that perform grouping of musical events. Here, we consider the problem of automatic segmentation via supervised learning from a dataset containing segmentation labels of an expert. We present a statistical classification-based segmentation system developed specifically for Turkish makam music. The proposed system uses two novel features, a makam-based and an usul-based feature, together with features commonly used in literature. The makam-based feature is defined as the probability of a note to appear at the phrase boundary, computed from the distributions of boundaries with respect to the piece’s makam pitches. Likewise, the usul-based feature is computed from the distributions of boundaries with respect to beats in the rhythmic cycle, usul of the piece. Several experimental setups using different feature groups are designed to test the contribution of the proposed features on three datasets. The results show that the new features carry complementary information to existing features in the literature within the Turkish makam music segmentation context and that the inclusion of new features resulted in statistically significant performance improvement.Article Citation - WoS: 13Citation - Scopus: 20Weighing Diverse Theoretical Models on Turkish Maqam Music Against Pitch Measurements: a Comparison of Peaks Automatically Derived From Frequency Histograms With Proposed Scale Tones(Taylor and Francis Ltd., 2009) Bozkurt, Barış; Yarman, Ozan; Karaosmanoğlu, M. Kemal; Akkoç, CanSince the early 20th century, various theories have been advanced in order to mathematically explain and notate modes of Traditional Turkish music known as maqams. In this article, maqam scales according to various theoretical models based on different tunings are compared with pitch measurements obtained from select recordings of master Turkish performers in order to study their level of match with analysed data. Chosen recordings are subjected to a fully computerized sequence of signal processing algorithms for the automatic determination of the set of relative pitches for each maqam scale: f0 estimation, histogram computation, tonic detection + histogram alignment, and peak picking. For nine well-recognized maqams, automatically derived relative pitches are compared with scale tones defined by theoretical models using quantitative distance measures. We analyse and interpret histogram peaks based on these measures to find the theoretical models most conforming with all the recordings, and hence, with the quotidian performance trends influenced by them.Article Taylor Series Approximation of Semi-Blind Blue Channel Estimates With Applications To Dtv(Taylor and Francis Ltd., 2008) Pladdy, Christopher; Özen, Serdar; Nerayanuru, Sreenivasa M.; Ding, Peilu; Fimoff, Mark J.; Zoltowski, MichaelWe present a low-complexity method for approximating the semi-blind best linear unbiased estimate (BLUE) of a channel impulse response (CIR) vector for a communication system, which utilizes a periodically transmitted training sequence. The BLUE, for h, for the general linear model, y = Ah + w + n, where w is correlated noise (dependent on the CIR, h) and the vector n is an Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN) process, which is uncorrelated with w is given by h = (ATC(h)-1A)-1ATC(h)-1y. In the present work, we propose a Taylor series approximation for the function F(h) = (ATC(h)-1A)-1ATC(h)-1y. We describe the full Taylor formula for this function and describe algorithms using, first-, second-, and third-order approximations, respectively. The algorithms give better performance than correlation channel estimates and previous approximations used, at only a slight increase in complexity. Our algorithm is derived and works within the framework imposed by the ATSC 8-VSB DTV transmission system, but will generalize to any communication system utilizing a training sequence embedded within data.
