    Photon Mapping in Image-Based Visual Comfort Assessments With Bsdf Models of High Resolution

    Data-driven models replicate the irregular Bidirectional Scattering Distribution Functions (BSDFs) of optically Complex Fenestration Systems in daylight simulation. RADIANCE employs the tensor tree to store the BSDF at high directional resolution. Its application in backward ray-tracing is however challenging, since the density of stochastic samples must match the model resolution. BSDF proxy and peak extraction address this problem, but are limited to cases when either the fenestration geometry, or the shape and direction of the transmission peak are known. Photon Mapping is proposed to efficiently sample arbitrary BSDFs from the known sun direction. The existing implementation in RADIANCE is extended to account for light sources and their reflections in the field of view, that are of particular importance for visual comfort assessments. The method achieves a high degree of accordance with ray-tracing, and reduces simulation times by approximate to 95% with data-driven models of high resolution.

    Dovecotes in Kayabağ Village: an Assessment of Landscape and Architectural Characteristics

    The dovecotes of Kayseri-Gesi stand out as unique examples of indigenous architecture of Anatolia. They are considered significant elements of the rural landscape. The purpose of the construction, the constructional and spatial characteristics peculiar to these dovecotes, make them an important element of global cultural and architectural heritage. Dovecotes that are built upon rocks, with mere building stones provided from the same rocks, look like a shaped form of the topography itself. This is very much to do with the geological features of the Cappadocia Region where Kayseri is located. In terms of construction techniques and spatial organization, the dramatic differences in the dovecotes’ underground and aboveground parts make them even more outstanding. This research is based on the field studies conducted in the dovecotes of Kayabağ. The landscape was studied in all aspects and each dovecote is studied for its placement, topographical interactions, plan and section typologies, materiality and construction techniques. The structural problems stemmed from the geological features and the deterioration caused by external factors are taken into consideration. The study concludes with an overall approach for preservation, sustainability and conservation process of the heritage landscape of Dovecotes [Güvercinlik] of Kayabağ.

    An Evaluation Methodology Proposal for Building Envelopes Containing Phase Change Materials: the Case of a Flat Roof in Turkey’s Climate Zones

    Phase change materials (PCMs) can be used to enhance the thermal energy storage capacity of a building element to improve indoor thermal comfort conditions and decrease energy usage, yet these effects need to be carefully analysed to achieve the desired benefits. This paper proposes an evaluation methodology for building envelopes: first, a numerical computational fluid dynamics model is validated by experimental work; then, time-dependent simulations are used to analyse monthly energy requirements and heat flux. A sample flat roof is evaluated in terms of required cooling load with and without PCM in Turkey’s climate zones. Graphical phase change representations and heat flux results were used to evaluate the cooling load reduction in addition to the effects of PCM type and PCM amount and the necessity for night cooling. In conclusion, the methodology is flexible and can be utilized to evaluate the building element for various parameters.

    Assessment of Construction Techniques and Material Usage in Izmir Rural Houses

    The domestic architecture in the rural villages of ̄zmir comprises a unique built environment with their masonry wall textures, semi-open sofas, round tiled-hipped roofs, and chimneys, and represents an important part of the cultural and architectural heritage. This assessment is mainly based on field observations that focus on the architectural and structural layout of intact, damaged, and destroyed houses. During field observation and the analysis of data certain plan typologies and relationships between the geological formations of the region and choice of materials and construction techniques were observed. While load-bearing masonry and timber skeleton systems are common, extensive use of timber laces, stone, and fired or adobe brick masonry with mud mortar and timber frames infilled with masonry materials were frequently seen. Generally, round timber elements such as wall plates, laces, lintels, posts, and frames of flooring systems are used. Architectural degenerations in authentic houses, defective details and partially due to the earthquake-prone nature of the region seismicity have been evaluated. An overall approach for the preservation and sustainability of this heritage is suggested.

    Reconstruction of Archaeological Sites: Principles Practice and Evaluation

    The reconstruction works at archaeological sites need to be approached with caution to prevent disturbing any surviving evidence. This study aims to develop criteria for the evaluation of reconstructions at archaeological sites. The criteria have been developed through review of current international and national conservation charters to help improve reconstruction proposals. These criteria are determined considering the remain scale and the site scale. Accuracy of the reconstruction, avoidance of physical damage, compatibility of materials, distinguishability of the interventions, availability of the interventions for future applications, and reversibility are the criteria concerning the remain scale; limits of the intervention, retainability of the original characteristics of the site, and perception of the reconstruction are the criteria concerning the site scale. These criteria are applied to the reconstruction works realized at the West Stoa of Agora, zmir, Turkey during 1930s, which had to be dismissed and reimplemented in 2000s. The recent reconstruction was applied with compatible materials; the interventions did not damage the original materials and they are distinguishable. This study of the reconstruction presents the latest architectural information, provides a basis for future studies, and is reversible. The reconstructed structure does not falsify the original characteristics, but enables increased perception of the site.

    Architectural Design Students' Explorations Through Conceptual Diagrams

    Views of creativity highlight the importance of incubation or the significance of sketching as a means of seeing emergent properties. Both views put design students at a disadvantage. This study investigates the strengths and weaknesses of an alternative approach to design education, in which students were asked to develop a design idea through conceptual diagrams. This study investigates how conceptual diagrams might help architectural students to see the relationships between concepts and space and coordinate their dual development through conceptual diagrams. The study presents the development of the ideas of 13 second-year architectural students. Students' logbooks, together with their midterm and final review presentations, were studied to determine whether students drew any conceptual diagrams, whether they were instrumental in spatial organization, and how they introduced changes during the design process. The findings showed that this particular design education approach helped students start the design process and stay focused throughout the design process.

    A Review of Planar Scissor Structural Mechanisms: Geometric Principles and Design Methods

    This study deals with a review of planar scissor structural mechanisms (SSMs) and reports on how they can be easily transformed from a stowed to a deployed configuration. These mechanisms have an important transformation capacity of their extension and rotation properties, and many examples have been proposed that vary in size, type and geometry. Although there are many studies dealing with designing new planar or spatial SSMs and their calculation methods, there is no systematic study demonstrating the basic typologies, geometric principles, design rules and constraints of such SSMs. Further, current calculation methods are based on the inductive approach in which the dimension of one scissor unit (SU) is given, but the span of the whole structure is found later according to the number of SUs that are used to assemble the structure. However, this approach is not convenient for architectural applications, because it requires a deductive approach in which the dimensions and required number of SUs are calculated according to defined span length. On the basis of this concept, this article, first, analyses the geometric design of SSMs systematically in terms of their possible configurations and then develops trigonometric calculation methods for different types of SSMs, using a deductive approach.

    Design of a 2-Dof 8r Linkage for Transformable Hypar Structure

    Double curved geometries including hyperbolicparaboloids (hypars) have become a trend in contemporary architecture. However, most of the constructed architectural examples of the hypars are static and cannot offer any form variability. In this paper, a 2-DOF 8R linkage mechanism is introduced to buildtransformable hypar structures. It is inspired from the basic design principles of Bennett linkage. By its distinctive connection details and additional links, this novel mechanism can change its form fromplanar geometries to various hypars. The paper begins with the brief summary of the applications of hypar structures in architecture. Secondly, main principles and deficiencies of the Bennett linkage are presented. According to these deficiencies, structural synthesis of the novel mechanism is considered. Finally, advantages and potential uses of the proposed novel mechanism are explained. © 2012 Copyright Taylor and Francis Group, LLC.

    The Impact of Planimetric Configuration on Structurally Damaged Residential Buildings

    This study was conducted to determine a significant relationship between planimetric configuration and vulnerability of hazardous buildings located in seismic zones by developing design and construction efficiency indicators. Case study examples were chosen from residential buildings in Bolu, Düzce and Kaynasli in Turkey, which were damaged by the 1999 earthquakes. Utilizing field survey drawings, efficiency quotients; compactness quotients; construction efficiency ratios; aspect ratios and height-to-base ratios were defined as planimetric configuration indicators. The significant relationship between these aspects and the damage level of buildings were determined through statistical analyses and scatter charts. Planimetric configuration - including building geometry, cantilever projections and layout of columns -was reviewed according to the Turkish Earthquake Code. Findings revealed certain dependencies for efficiency ratios, which would satisfactorily predict the seismic vulnerability of buildings based on planimetric configuration. Researchers in the field of architecture who are engaged in earthquake-resistant design may use the general methodology. In addition, architects and structural engineers can use this approach presented here to evaluate their design.

    Conceptualization by Visual and Verbal Representations: an Experience in an Architectural Design Studio

    In current educational practices within the discipline of architecture, the systematic use of conceptualization within the design process has not yet been extensively developed and applied. Though utilizing concepts within the design process has been discussed hitherto by educators and scholars, the conventional education system in architectural design may prevent its proper application in the studio process. Furthermore, because conceptualization describes an activity that has peculiarly visual and verbal dimensions, the coordinated use of drawing and language as the representation systems also refers to the main character of the design process. In these respects, by offering a systematic alternative for conceptualization within the design process, this study presents a new educational pattern. The study was implemented during the sixth semester of the architectural design studio and includes an examination of the relationships and functions of drawing and language as the very media of conceptualization within the discipline of architecture.
