Article Citation - Scopus: 8Symbolic Creativity in Play Activity: a Critique on Playthings From Daily Life Objects To Toys(Taylor and Francis Ltd., 2018) Talu, NilüferPlay is an essential activity for children’s development. Children play with daily life objects as well as toys. Daily life with its various objects and practices provides a real freedom for discovery and self-realization. Children celebrate this value through symbolic creativity that flourishes in various play practices, such as symbolic object use, storytelling, animation in special modes of virtualization and actualization, construction with everyday mathematics and puzzling for order in chaos. The study examines a girl’s play activities with daily life things and waste materials between 6 and 8 years of ages. Finally, the study emphasizes that: (1) symbolic creativity is necessary for children’s self-realization and accordingly for their well-being and (2) toys must be selected carefully to stimulate children’s ability to imagine, create and produce.Article Fab Lab Toys From a Second-Grade Industrial Design Studio: Expanding the Boundaries of Toy Design(Common Ground Research Networks, 2024) Talu,N.; Yurt,C.; Çolak,C.This study delves into the seven-week toy design process within a second-grade industrial design undergraduate studio. The foundation of this studio lies in a creative design brief that centers on a closely interconnected triad of concepts: opportunity, challenge, and expectation. The Fab Lab environment serves as an ideal platform and opportunity for generating toy designs within the realm of design education. The intention is to challenge the conventional landscape of mass-produced toys and prevalent toy categories in consumer culture through Fab Lab–produced toys. The expectation is to design toys that transcend these established categories, catering more effectively to the unstructured playtime of children aged 3 to 6. This process aspires to harness contemporary technologies like 3D printing in design education to equip students with skills not only for tackling novel and present challenges but also for addressing critical contexts. The symbiotic relationship between the design education process and experiential prototyping elevates students’ understanding of real-world implications and nurtures their creativity within the design journey. The culmination of this process yields multi-category toy designs poised to enrich the free play experiences of children aged 3 to 6. © 2024 Common Ground Research Networks. The challenge is rendered even more compelling in the conditions of the modern world, where we live under visual hegemony and all our perceptions and means of communication are based on visuality. Visually impaired people have to compensate with their other senses to overcome this disadvantage. To be able to live self-sufficiently, their daily life must be based principally on their tactile and auditory senses. Throughout the history, there have been two vital elements that naturally support child development: "play" and "toy". Many scientific studies on children development have underlined the essential role of toys and play tools, as the objects of the activity of play. However, the play tools and toys designed for visually impaired children are inadequate. In fact, parents and teachers attempt to design handmade play tools to meet this need. The study has been constructed upon a literature review on visual impairment and visually impaired children; followed by an observation study carried out in the nursery and first grade classes in a primary school for visually impaired children. Based on literature review and observation study, the study has stated toy design criteria for visually impaired children to improve their skills. Underlining the design criteria, the study is finalized with a play set design to support them in their daily lives. Key words: Visual Impairment, Visually Impaired Children, Play, Play Tools, Toy, Toy Design.Master Thesis The Role of Tradition and Everday Life in Scandinavian Modern Design(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2012) Öcal, Melis; Talu, NilüferWithin Modernization, Modern design always rejected tradition and past and also focused on austerity and functionality. Modern design has always been criticized for being separated from nature and everyday life. Modern design has always been considered as being an alienated product of industrial production mode. However, Scandinavian design, Northern Europe design approach, has been distinguished in integrating their tradition and cultural identity into their design perspective which also embraces functionality. Additionally, Scandinavian design has been shaped as an integral part of their everyday life styles along with environmental factors. Their approach has been improved or influenced by the farm workers and fishermen who produced their own furniture using materials such as wood from the forest especially pine and spruce. They used cotton, linen, wool, sheepskin and furs for domestic textiles. They used palettes as light and pallid in contrast to the Mediterranean countries. They used vivid patterns inspired by the nature to create comfortable and warm atmosphere. Thus, the result was differentiated in Modern design in its own broadest definition. This study argues that Scandinavian modern design created its own style. It focuses on integrating its tradition into modern notion, and also relates it with the environmental factors, everyday life styles and nature. The study searches Scandinavian design which refers to the nature and embodies the nature as design along with emotions and colors. Sweden is chosen for the case study as a representative Scandinavian country. Key Words: Modernism, Modern Design, Scandinavian Design, Tradition, Traditional Motifs, Folk Art, Daily Life, Environmental Factors, Natural Materials, Color Schemas.Article A Cluster of Surprise Egg Toys as Designed Objects at the Intersection of Design and Culture(Common Ground Research Networks, 2022) Talu, NilüferThis study examines the cultural context of a cluster of surprise egg toys. The cluster contains 167 toys, collected between the years 1993 and 2015. The study methodology consisted of content analysis involving both qualitative interpretation and quantitative techniques. The interpretation is initiated with the toys’ physical materiality. Analysis is then developed on the compositional modalities of each toy, the place of each in the cluster, and the cluster as a whole. Qualitative interpretation and theoretical analysis of detailed descriptions and groupings of the cluster highlight the central themes found at the intersection of design and culture. Analysis of the cluster reveals that it carries the duality, or the tension, between modern and postmodern cultures with one elevating functionality and the other using storytelling as a means of creativity. They are designed objects and design things blending the two cultures in their physical content, and can be seen as artifacts that contribute to the value of design in everyday life within the context of mass culture. © Common Ground Research Networks, Nilüfer Talu, All Rights Reserved. Article Design Discourse in Discount Shopping Context: Textual Analysis With Critical Studies Perspective and Deconstructionist Theory(Intellect Ltd., 2023) Talu, NilüferIn consumption culture, individuals need things to update their selves or to repre-sent their identities. The more they update their belongings, the more they feel unsatisfied. In this cultural recycling, everyday objects become objects of desire, while the notion of design functions to create attraction. The problem originates in the disengagement of subjects–objects in which the capitalist economic system gets benefits sustaining the cycle of mass production-consumption. To get more benefit, this cycle is sped up along with discount shopping context. The study aims to produce a design discourse in discount shopping context in relevance of the issues of individuality and ethics. The method is a textual analysis with critical studies perspective and deconstructionist approach. The texts are the questionnaire transcripts written by fifteen women. Critical studies perspective clarifies power relations between capitalist economic system and consumer; and deconstructivist approach determines binary relations in relevance of individuality, and ethics and heterogeneity of the texts concerning to design. Along with these two approaches, textual analysis creates a discursive structure. The structure is used to generate a design discourse in which the meaning of design is situated. In this structure, design would be something in a specific heterogeneity and relations around the matters of individuality and ethics. The discursive structure is of importance that summarizes the method used and determines all coherencies around the definitions of design. This structure also could be a useful source for the production of other critical discourses on the relations of subjects–objects and the position of design in consumption culture. © 2023 Intellect Ltd Article. Article A Cluster of Surprise Egg Toys as Designed Objects at the Intersection of Design and Culture [2](Common Ground Research Networks, 2022) Talu, N.This study examines the cultural context of a cluster of surprise egg toys.
